Josh, that Edikanfo record is the one. In my defence it was around 5 years ago and when I couldn't find the vinyl I swiftly suppressed the idea that it'd be some lost gem that basically threw a tonne of delay and some great drum sounds on the Ghana soundz comps.

It's been eons since I heard of anything unfamiliar from Eno, but I just learned that around the time of the Eno/Cale record he did a cover of "Ring of Fire!" You can get it here: http://www.moredarkthanshark.org/download.html

Just noticed this -- pretty interesting. Part of me wonders if Eno would consider doing more live stuff given how much improv he does with Abrahams et al.

This is kind of a fun idea for a comp – tho I think there's probably a much better case to be made than this. Personally, I quibble a bit with the track selection – I would have included a bonus track or two from the Remain in Light sessions where Eno croons over the polyrhythms. There's not quite enough of what he did with Phil Collins and Percy Jones in the 70s ("Over Fire Island," people!) and Lanois in the early 80s here. And, there's a bunch more 90s stuff—solo, on No. 1 Outside/Wah Wah/Passengers and remixes beyond the Grid—that helps flesh out how much the guy has always loved a good groove.

That said, it's a decent start:

More Volts: The Funky Eno

An hour long trip through the funked-up side of Brian Eno's output since the 70’s. Expect David Bryne, nonsense verse, Talking Heads, The Grid and a whole lot of slap bass.

Probably something with Karl Hyde could go on here.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 16 March 2016 13:58 (eight years ago) link

was thinking that too - "Lilac" would eat up lots of the running time but it's funky as hell (I'd add "Daddy's Car" too just cuz I love it)

frogbs, Wednesday, 16 March 2016 14:10 (eight years ago) link

Totally forgot about the Hyde stuff! Totally agree. Perhaps it's a segmented by era/style thing:

Funky Alien: AGW, RAF, Lanois-beat stuff from the Music for Films trough, Hyde

It's Nearly Africa: Talking Heads, Bush of Ghosts, etc.

You're Unbelievable: Nerve Net, James/U2, 90s remixes, We Prick You-type stuff

Whoops meant to put Hyde w Africa.

Listening to "The Ship" title track is putting me in an Eno frame of mind and have been going back to the box sets, where I first heard most of his work.

Anyone willing to give a go at making a playlist of his best bits since the 1992 box sets? I only know odds and ends from a few of those albums.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Tuesday, 19 April 2016 01:29 (seven years ago) link

I'd guess it's kind of tough, since he only released one vocal album ("Another Day on Earth") since the boxed sets, and almost all of the other myriad things he did release were more or less strictly ambient/installation work, with the exception of the Karl Hyde discs, the other Eno/Byrne disc, guest spots, production work and the odd comp or two.

A couple of my fave things he was involved with were this Depeche Mode remix:

Eno actually gets a co-write credit on both "Heroes" and "Once in a Lifetime," which I've always found interesting. Eno rarely gets formal co-write credit, but in those cases it conspicuously happens to be two of the respective artists' best songs, if not their best. There was an NPR bit years ago about "Once in a Lifetime," and it's revealed that Eno wrote the chorus! Byrne originally wanted the whole song to be the A part, over and over. As for "Heroes," I've always wondered why Bowie shared credit with Eno or what the latter's specific contributions were.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 27 April 2017 03:20 (six years ago) link

that's a great list of productions and collaborations. lots of lesser known stuff in that, or stuff that doesn't immeidatley jump out at you as an Eno thing but then later you're like, "oh yeah".

I quite like his mix of Jane Siberry's "Temple"
