Nice of someone to do a playlist. Some odd choices (Pride is like the least Eno-ish track on Unforgettable Fire) but I'm not going to be a dick about it. Any excuse to listen to Ho Renomo is fine by me.

Cool, but that list misses out on some key credits. There are a lot of albums and tracks up there that Eno produced as well as appeared on, like Paul Simon or Geoffrey Oryema, but I guess that is neither here nor there. More annoying that it lists Eno as the producer of "Low" and "Mylo Xyloto," among others, as he is not. Eno also sings and plays keyboards on Rachid Taha's awesome cover of "Rock the Casbah!"

Keep seeing weird errors, like, Eno produced three tracks on that Slowdive record, BTW, and didn't produce James' "Whiplash," or "Lodger," "or "Heroes"; he co-wrote bits of stuff throughout the above list. Don't think the "Dune" track was a collaboration, just a one-off on a Toto-centric score, etc. I would have thrown in "Miss Shapiro" (with Manzanera) plus the "Lion Sleeps Tonight" and "Seven Deadly Finns" singles, too.

Tim Booth's "Butterfly's Dream" is great.

Eno's role in that last Coldplay album was really weird and ambiguous, sounded like they really wanted him to be in the studio the whole time and he was busy or uninterested so they credited his small contributions/guidance as (ugh) 'Enoxification.' he does have a writing credit on "Every Teardrop," though, so fair game for the playlist.

And Christmas Lights, upsettingly.

I keep having to remind myself that Eno didn't actually produce Low and "Heroes". I thought for years that he did.

i do wonder how clearly delineated those roles are, though, whether the distinction is made mainly for the sake of who had final say at the mixing board. like can someone like Eno contribute heavily to the writing/playing of a record without any real participation in the production or collaboration with the credited producer?

I should have another look at Visconti's memoir to get his take on it. Eno's "production" is often more about songwriting than it is about working the desk anyway so I'm not sure how meaningful the distinction is on some of these records.

Obviously this isn't some blinding insight - I'm just giving the list-compiler a little slack.

yeah i mean the list is by design supposed to encompass any contribution he's made in any form, so i think there's only a problem if something's there that he didn't actually work on or have any credits at all on.

Thing is, there's a ton of stuff there I've never heard before -- like Robert Calvert's Ship of Fools (surprisingly early Eno-esque!). And I'm almost embarrassed to say that I'd never heard the Cardew, despite knowing "The Great Learning" was a massive influence on his compositional process. What I hadn't anticipated was how much it would sound like Eno as well.

I mean, yes -- we can pick at the omissions, credits and choices. But it's a playlist, after all -- not a $150 box. And that sort of misses what struck me about this list -- which is that I've never seen quite so many strands of his work and influence collected in one place. From the early 70s rock collaborations like the Calvert and Matching Mole, to the minimalist stuff he produced for Obscure, to the stray writing and performance credits like the Material and Camel (to say nothing of the reams of one-offs he's done since the mid-90s), this makes the most powerful case for the reach and scope of Eno's work that I've yet seen.

Eno was a busy guy in the '70s. He can always be counted to crop up on a Wyatt or Roxy related project. He even appears on Andy Mackay's solo album "The Search for Eddie Riff."

I'm a big fan of the Portsmouth Sinfonia (not upthread), where Eno played ... clarinet? It's funny. They appear on "Taking Tiger Mountain."

FWIW, a lot of the cool things people like about the Bowie albums was Visconti's doing, like the snare sound on "Low," for example. But Eno did co-write "Heroes," and his role is pretty prominent on "Lodger." Though of course, the proof is in "Scary Monsters," which is really weird and neat sounding without a bit of Eno.

Josh, that Edikanfo record is the one. In my defence it was around 5 years ago and when I couldn't find the vinyl I swiftly suppressed the idea that it'd be some lost gem that basically threw a tonne of delay and some great drum sounds on the Ghana soundz comps.

This is kind of a fun idea for a comp – tho I think there's probably a much better case to be made than this. Personally, I quibble a bit with the track selection – I would have included a bonus track or two from the Remain in Light sessions where Eno croons over the polyrhythms. There's not quite enough of what he did with Phil Collins and Percy Jones in the 70s ("Over Fire Island," people!) and Lanois in the early 80s here. And, there's a bunch more 90s stuff—solo, on No. 1 Outside/Wah Wah/Passengers and remixes beyond the Grid—that helps flesh out how much the guy has always loved a good groove.

That said, it's a decent start:

Listening to "The Ship" title track is putting me in an Eno frame of mind and have been going back to the box sets, where I first heard most of his work.

Anyone willing to give a go at making a playlist of his best bits since the 1992 box sets? I only know odds and ends from a few of those albums.

I'd guess it's kind of tough, since he only released one vocal album ("Another Day on Earth") since the boxed sets, and almost all of the other myriad things he did release were more or less strictly ambient/installation work, with the exception of the Karl Hyde discs, the other Eno/Byrne disc, guest spots, production work and the odd comp or two.

My own compilation of his productions + collaborations

Eno actually gets a co-write credit on both "Heroes" and "Once in a Lifetime," which I've always found interesting. Eno rarely gets formal co-write credit, but in those cases it conspicuously happens to be two of the respective artists' best songs, if not their best. There was an NPR bit years ago about "Once in a Lifetime," and it's revealed that Eno wrote the chorus! Byrne originally wanted the whole song to be the A part, over and over. As for "Heroes," I've always wondered why Bowie shared credit with Eno or what the latter's specific contributions were.
