sarahell, Friday, 29 June 2012 00:42 (eleven years ago) link

the last one was a Bettie Page one but they don't seem to sell it any more :-(
I am wearing a Stop Staring one to a do tomorrow!

kinder, Friday, 29 June 2012 07:27 (eleven years ago) link

I really love StopStaring, have bought four dresses and been crazy about 3. The first one I bought was sort of wonky but they were just starting out.
I would love to buy some of these by Whirlingturban.

I bought a dress 8 years ago and was impressed with the structure and fit. Worth what I paid for it.

I want a wedding just to wear this dress and I'm not one of those,"I want a wedding just to wear this dress" kind of girl:

I got this to wear to a 20s party, but it hits mid-thigh. Not quite demure. Might have to send it back.

$30 import fee on my last shipment of eShakti - a skirt and a dress. ;_; Just when I am at my brokest.. damnit. No more online shopping for me, for a while..

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 3 July 2012 20:09 (eleven years ago) link

Gah... a dress I was in love with online went on sale recently, but my size sold out. Thought I'd try my luck with the next size up, which arrived today. The fit actually looks mostly okay, it just doesn't really feel right, I guess. There's a bit of excess fabric at the back, which I'm not really fond of (pretty sure the correct size would fit flatter against my back). Likely to be returned, with sadness.

salsa shark, Wednesday, 4 July 2012 12:31 (eleven years ago) link

All packaged up and ready for return. Better luck next time :/

salsa shark, Wednesday, 4 July 2012 12:51 (eleven years ago) link

Awww, pity. Good for you for being proactive and sending it back - I've a few items in my closet that I promise myself I am going to get tailored to fit right.. but yeah.. hasn't happened yet!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 4 July 2012 13:33 (eleven years ago) link

that is such a great dress - i feel your sadness!

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 4 July 2012 13:49 (eleven years ago) link

VP, that 20s dress is as cute as a PICTURE! I hope you don't send it back, I hope you wear it!!

how did I get here? why am I in the whiskey aisle? this is all so (Laurel), Wednesday, 4 July 2012 13:49 (eleven years ago) link

I haven't sent it back yet, due to laziness, but I will heed your advice and try it one more time. I fear the drop waist is too tight on me for the style of dress--it should be loose and billowy, I think, not body skimming. If this one doesn't work, I need to go on-line-20s-dress shopping again.

Virginia Plain, Wednesday, 4 July 2012 15:08 (eleven years ago) link

I wore my James Perse knit maxi dress yesterday. Soooo comfortable.

tokyo rosemary, Thursday, 5 July 2012 15:45 (eleven years ago) link

So I bought 2 eshatki (sp ) dresses and my god the fabric feels horrific. The cut on the bodice of both is perfection though. I will say the skirt seems a lot longer than predicted and has maybe twice the required material. May have to get some kind of sewing/tailor type person to remedy this

Cussing like a bunch of Bukowskis (sunny successor), Saturday, 7 July 2012 05:34 (eleven years ago) link

My fabric is usually okay but my most recent one was also weirdly long! Company of giants I suppose?

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Saturday, 7 July 2012 13:16 (eleven years ago) link

The fabric on the one I have is fine but it's definitely an unfortunate length. I will be taking it to be shortened before wearing.

target has some super cute dresses right now - i bought 3 today, including a maxi dress, which i never thought in a million years i would ever own, but it's kind of not as unflattering as i imagined!

just1n3, Sunday, 8 July 2012 00:59 (eleven years ago) link

and lol @ ytth: he was with me while i was looking through the dresses, pointing out ones he liked, and bc he is v helpful and remembered things i have told him about clothes and what i like and dislike, he helpfully pointed out that the dress i was looking at had an "emperor" waist. so many lols.

just1n3, Sunday, 8 July 2012 01:01 (eleven years ago) link

vowed today to buy more dresses...my mission this week, should I choose to accept

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 8 July 2012 01:04 (eleven years ago) link

lol @ emperor waist

tokyo rosemary, Sunday, 8 July 2012 03:10 (eleven years ago) link

In love with Modcloth's 100% cotton dresses.

*tera, Sunday, 8 July 2012 04:08 (eleven years ago) link

Mission: Dresses was a success! I haven't purchased any summer dresses in over 3 years so this was my splurge.

This one is more of a night-time dress than a day dress, but omg so simple and flattering I had to have it.

I also got a black lightweight jersey dress, with a summery pattern around the hem to disguise the fact that YES I bought another black dress...I'm just not quite ready for ALL color all the time.

And one longshot. A pale green sheath dress covered in tiny sheer fluttery ruffles. The whole thing moves so beautifully when it's on, I couldn't resist. No idea where I'm going to wear it. But it was so cool looking and so on clearance I couldn't help it. Lol.

Can I also just: RAGGH plus size clothing designers WHY are 99.9% of your prints so UGLY and loud and big and awful? Why is it so hard to find simple dresses?

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 9 July 2012 02:53 (eleven years ago) link

I know! I was thinking yesterday though it would be amazing to have a website that let you select prints (possibly upload your own?), cut, fabric, etc. Because I have a bunch of print ideas in mind, but I hate depending on the whims of the designer or buyer!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Monday, 9 July 2012 03:24 (eleven years ago) link

Also that those are all beautiful, I wouldn't have been able to resist the red dress myself. but I would wear that to work!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Monday, 9 July 2012 03:24 (eleven years ago) link

You know, I might wear it to work actually...the closed neckline would make me feel a bit less exposed than my other summer dresses. I have some bejewelled sandals that'd go nicely.

I like your website idea ffm!

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 9 July 2012 03:57 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah! Too bad I have no imitative in taking THAT on! :)

And the red dress seems plenty appropriate and just the delicious amount of fancy for work wear.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Monday, 9 July 2012 04:03 (eleven years ago) link

The skirt is quite full, has a lovely swing to it :D

hahaha, sigh, it does seem like there is some sort of strange hivemind that shares the belief, "large ladies want to dress like dental assistants." also, carl agatha's lane bryant rant to thread.

good chance you can combine; i've combined similar offers in the past

words i never expected to type in my life: i am officially a maxi dress convert

just1n3, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 22:40 (eleven years ago) link

me TOO! I got an eShakti dress that was way longer than I expected but I felt like a princess all day in it!

i don't know if this actually works, but the idea is blowing my mind (found on pinterest):

Pin a small safety pin to the seam of your slip and you will not have a clingy skirt or dress. Same thing works with slacks that cling when wearing panty hose. Place pin in seam of slacks and — ta da! — static is gone.

whoa

omg I wonder if I could weigh blowy skirts down in the same manner. A+

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 18:20 (eleven years ago) link

Wait, pantyhose under slacks?

tokyo rosemary, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 22:44 (eleven years ago) link

I was wondering that too! That's too much work for me.

I think I have Stockholm syndrome from eShakti, they ship me dresses late and I have a few I have to get fitted and like sunny(?) upthread said, they manage somehow to use way more fabric than you think they need.. but then they go and give me a $45 gift card to apologize for it taking a month for me to get my dresses.

Also I think they are trolling me:

have been wearing my new dresses to work

although I will admit to being TERRIFIED of showing so much skin at work with my strappier dresses and covering up with a zip up top (also I sit under the AC duct and my cubicle is like antarctica)

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 17:23 (eleven years ago) link

but still, it's nice to feel pretty :D

for sure, yes!
office AC does wreck the summer-dress look, but taking the sweater off after leaving work is some clark-kent-to-superman business

I am also one of those who sits under an office a/c duct. Coworkers don't seem to understand how cold it really is when the thing blows directly on you, mine tend to be scornful of people who complain about it (the French woman, who also sits under an a/c and who everyone already thinks is strange, is so bold as to actually turn the a/c off). I just put on a jacket, but then I get made fun of. 'But you're Canadian!' they say. 'That doesn't mean I like being cold,' I grumble.
