I'll buy one of y'alls copies when you're done. I still have over 100+ hours of jRPG tripe at my house I've yet to work through. Getting ahead of myself.

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 14:52 (sixteen years ago) link

devil summoner kind of sucks. i played persona 3 all fucking day yesterday--it is really lame and frustrating but still really cool. best of the megaten games that i've played and probably the best rpg for the ps2 that i've played.

adam, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 15:14 (sixteen years ago) link

i can't stress how much i like the no random encounters thing.

adam, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 15:15 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah you know Tombot I am not at all kidding when I say this makes Rogue Galaxy look like a complete piece of shit. FFXII and DQVIII...better watch their back depending on how good this thing is going to get. I'm four hours in, and "probably the best RPG for the PS2" has already gone through my head as well.

Haha yeah but at least that emo kid puts a gun to his head and pulls the trigger multiple times in every battle! That's your mute DQ style hero that you can name whatever you want, and the other dudes in my party so far are a ponytail/baseball cap gamer dude and a jock boxer. There's absolutely none of emo hair Main Character whining about his feelings, he never says a word.

marmotwolof, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 21:24 (sixteen years ago) link

Correction, baseball cap dude doesn't even have a ponytail, for some reason I thought he did. In any case, none of the other characters so far are the least bit emo if that's what you're worried about. :D

marmotwolof, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 21:42 (sixteen years ago) link

No I'm just worried about my usual antipathy for any and all JJhighschool + Supernatural Bullshit storylines, though a few reviews have allayed a lot of my qualms in this regard

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 21:50 (sixteen years ago) link

junpei is a total douche. i think what i like about this game so much (so far) is the lack of tediousness. healing is easy, getting around is easy, and stamina points (equivalent to magic points) are not impossible/$$$ to restore so cool powers and combinations can be used frequently/all the time instead of just mashing the basic physical attack button. also the soundtrack is as good as jet set radio future.

adam, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 22:52 (sixteen years ago) link

A nice touch that it comes packaged with the soundtrack. Although the program I used to use to rip CDs is apparently no longer free. And I fucking hate iTunes/iPod/AAC. Any sugg's? I guess that's off topic... I still can't talk about the game proper until the 27th/28th when I can start playing it, eeeeeagh. Which is when Growlanser 5 comes out.

Will M., Wednesday, 22 August 2007 13:57 (sixteen years ago) link

Growlanser is 9/18 according to Gamestop. Wild Arms 5 comes out at the end of August though, and it's supposed to be really great. All these RPGs...

Well, I never picked up Persona 3 and was kind of regretting it recently as I looked around for a copy and saw how much they were already going for. However...!

IRVINE, CALIFORNIA — FEBRUARY 25, 2008 — Atlus U.S.A., Inc., the vanguard of role-playing games, today announced Persona 3 FES for the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, the highly-anticipated definitive cut of 2007’s RPG of the Year, Persona 3. With two games on one disc–a brand new chapter featuring 30+ hours of gameplay and an enhanced version of the original game loaded with new content and features–Persona 3 FES is the comprehensive version of one of the most acclaimed RPGs of 2007.

Persona 3 FES is a stand-alone product and does not require the original Persona 3 to play. However, players with save files from the original game will be able to transfer some of their saved data, such as their Persona compendium, to be used in the enhanced main story. The new story is accessible from the start and does not require players to finish the original game beforehand.

Persona 3 FES is scheduled for release on April 22nd for an MSRP of $29.99.

i may buy FES today. if i can find it. i think i only got through the first term in Persona 3 (then I got a 360...) but once I am living alone and have a ot more games time I intend to revisit w/ FES.

Will M., Friday, 2 May 2008 15:34 (fifteen years ago) link

fucking love persona 3, can i just say. I stopped playing it a couple of months ago to wait FES.

Dy, Friday, 2 May 2008 22:45 (fifteen years ago) link

Does this game have a day limit? If you get to the end of the school year and still have stuff to do, what happens?

abanana, Saturday, 3 May 2008 00:54 (fifteen years ago) link

I think you get a less good ending or something.

I picked up FES even though I got nowhere in P3 when I got it... I will tackle this once I am living on my own without a girlfriend, like a true JRPG fan

I picked up P3: FES & 4 over the holidays. Haven't started either though (maybe after I finish Chrono Trigger?). Can't decide which one I want to play first - I hear 4 is an improvement gameplay-wise?

if you play 4 first it'll be hard to play your copy of 3.

first dungeon in this game: a sentient bearsuit is helping my party navigate a world inside a television. he issues us all unflattering emo glasses. we are attacked by monsters and my character realises he has superpowers, at which point some heavy metal occurs. one of my companions comes face to face with his id and drives it berserk by refusing to acknowledge it as a part of himself, and so my character has to beat it into submission with a golf club.

just finished P4 today! don't really understand how people can play it for 100+ hours, took me half that. i guess if you were an OCD completist you could play for another 50 hours+? anyway really enjoyed it, almost every aspect of P3 was changed for the better.

asked and answered - its 100+ for ppl that fucked with stat-maxing and getting "perfect" characters. and replaying to get certain ending/situations i think ~~~ my p3 save file is 100+ hours. of course im also the type of person that has maxed items in disgaea 2

howd you like it? theres some other thread where i was salivating over p4 but its not quite as good as p3. p3 is my fave ps2 rpg so thats not a criticism but i just wasnt as into it

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 16:05 (fifteen years ago) link

i think P3 was 60 hours for me, P4 about 50. yeh i can't be bothered with stat maxing, i like to fight things knowing there's a chance i can be beaten! a lot of the improvements in P4 were functional (eg. the square button shortcuts, control over all characters) and as a whole i think its a better game, but i must admit to liking the characters & the dungeon layouts in P3 a lot more. and Riise was loads more annoying than Fuuka, but that's more down to the voice acting than anything in the original game.

xpost dan thats just the start, wait till you get to the teen biker with potty mouth who has to face up to his suppressed homosexuality in a sauna

zappi, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 16:14 (fifteen years ago) link

i didnt like the functional improvements! i had a weird love/hate with how terrible the battle controls in p3 were, they made combat more interesting and forced you to slow down and focus on your choices. p4 was too easy to run a script on

Lamp, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 16:27 (fifteen years ago) link

i feel like i've been playing persona 4 for ages and ages and ages all the time and i have had it three weeks and have twenty hours on my save file. i think time spent playing videogames passes differently to how it did when i was fourteen

thomp, Monday, 6 April 2009 21:31 (fifteen years ago) link

the emphasis on the quotidian in persona 4 is fantastic. i think my summary of the first dungeon above made the game sound way more kinetic + eventful than it actually is

there's a kind of actual emotional weight in e.g. the game making you come home every day and see your 8yo cousin sat in exactly the same place watching the same tv shows because her father's too devoted to his work

this is also the first game in which i have attempted to ask a character for her phone number right out, been told my courage stat is too low, and had to find an excuse to make it look like i need it instead

thomp, Monday, 6 April 2009 21:36 (fifteen years ago) link

As slow as the beginning of P5 is, P4G is even slower, as if it's making room for people who've never played video games before. I'm about two hours in, and the sum of my input has been running down two blocks of a town and being forced to go to bed. Am I close to getting actual gameplay any time soon?

Rabbity Gainsborough (Leee), Sunday, 20 November 2022 16:44 (one year ago) link

yes from what i remember

it's a very vibey game tho, falling in love with that little town is part of the process

Burnt Norton 360 (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 20 November 2022 17:24 (one year ago) link

Me, after beating a tough early boss to unlock a new (female) character to add to my party of two dudes: “Whew, barely made it out alive, I’d better leave the dungeon and stock up on more supplies.”

In game dudes: “We’d better leave the dungeon so that Chie doesn’t get too tired!”

Rabbity Gainsborough (Leee), Sunday, 20 November 2022 23:04 (one year ago) link

What is Shuffle Time? I've read that you can select all cards but I've only ever been able to pick one (or two when I pick a card that changes another card's type). I'm in the second dungeon, if that makes a difference.

Rabbity Gainsborough (Leee), Tuesday, 29 November 2022 00:46 (one year ago) link

a lot of the cards have a "1 more" option which lets you pick again. If you manage to clear all the cards, you get a guaranteed shuffle time next battle. Otherwise, I think it only happens if you win a battle through an all out attack.

hot take: P4 was boring. P5 was great. P3 (just started) looks like it might take the cake for me though. I wish I liked p4 more than I do. A lot of my frustration probably came from trying to 100% and thus being overleveled pretty early on and not having much of a challenge in the game. But beyond that, ehhhhh the story was good but not fantastic.

hrep (H.P), Wednesday, 30 November 2022 08:43 (one year ago) link

I'm using a sample size of 2, but this wouldn't be a Persona game if it didn't have at least one awful problematic heteronormative scene (I'm thinking of the fat phobic one with Yosuke). I kind of feel like I can't really recommend the series to others now, at least not without some serious caveats.

Rabbity Gainsborough (Leee), Sunday, 4 December 2022 22:35 (one year ago) link

*sigh* the fat phobia is not limited to one scene.

I also have to wrestle with some of my minmax impulses because a lot of guides say "beat the dungeon in as few days as possible (preferably one)," but then that really unbalances the gameplay -- a very long grind to get through the dungeon on the one hand, and then the life sim stuff that sometimes involves very limited player interaction.
