i dont think its bad at all, i think its funny. also not the best line here

"Takeover" is kinda OK as an early 00s indie-friendly crossover novelty single, but at the end of the day I kinda want my rap to have more in common with "Ya Playing Yourself" than "Bad Babysitter"

Actually whether it's a better song is kind of beside the point. I can see people liking "Ether" better, but I find it hard to believe people think Nas got the best of this battle even if he put out the better "song".
― Alex in SF, Thursday, 3 July 2008 19:21 (fifteen years ago) link
c'mon there are no classic or even canonized lines in "ether"-- "one hot album every ten year average", "smarten up nas", "your bodyguards 'oochie wally' verse was better than yours" are basically rap memes at this point
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 3 July 2008 19:23 (fifteen years ago) link
I thought this thread was going to be about various African myths and stories Nas cites in his lyrics. I wish it was that and not this completely retarded thread.
If a woman wears pink is it still gay? How about a white shirt with pink lettering? What percentage of the shirt must be pink in order for it to be gay? What hues of pink? Where do you draw the line between dark pink and light red? Light red is straight right? Or are all of the bloods gay?
― max, Thursday, 3 July 2008 19:24 (fifteen years ago) link
The whole fucking song is a rap meme, "ethering" has been a fucking rap urbandictionary fave for six years now.

What it boils down to is that this was a battle between a man with an innate, almost Mr Bean-esque, ability for making himself look like an utter twat (Nas) and Jay-Z, who could pull my entire family out of a burning building and still come off as massively unlikeable. Judging "winners" here isn't really an exact science as a result, but Nas made the "better" song (ie, to listen to), the "better" song (ie, by tedious rap purist rating systems), and the "better" song (funnier disses, both juvenalia and "remember the past dunny" shit). So yeah, Nas won this. Jay-Z actually loses it because the first time I heard "The Takeover" was on a free CD on the cover of the NME.

the best jay diss was this one jaz-o internet track along time ago, i can't remember the name, but jaz was mad that jay wouldn't do the video for that collab song on the "kingz county" album

I'd rather listen to Ether (better beat, Nas is a better rapper, etc.), but "half a bar" is the best zing in either track (or the related radio freestyles).

Ether isn't flashy, but it's solid and the beat is less showy. Just dramatic.
Takeover is flashy, funny, and has Jay's charisma. With the lol recognizable sample it's essentially a pop song.
Ether is good when I'm in a Mobb Deep mood or OB4CL mood. Takeover's better when I feel like enjoying what I'm listening to.
