This song could not have happened with J-Lo. You couldn't do those kinds of things with her voice. Jennifer Lopez and her dumb fat ass can fuck off.

Even for a movie tie-in, that video is seaux haute.

Matt Chesnut, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 03:14 (nineteen years ago) link

"also, it makes me really happy to know that j-lo wanted this and didn't get it."

Is this true? Amerie's voice is so pretty, and J-Lo's voice is fucking nails on a chalkboard. Give her ALL of J-Lo's songs from now on.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 04:05 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm afraid that this song will not sit well with me after overexposure. But for now, I adore "1 Thing."

I heard Amerie say so in an interview, so yeah, it's true.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 04:14 (nineteen years ago) link

Can I just say, while I Love 1 Thing, I still think Get Right is pretty fantastic - especially for the extended breakdown.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 04:39 (nineteen years ago) link

I hope all of this "1 Thing" love will spill over into people checking out Amerie's ridiculously slept on first album.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 06:04 (nineteen years ago) link

Tim OTM

Have y'all heard this Bobby Valentino joint yet tho? Oh man.

djdee (djdee2005), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 06:09 (nineteen years ago) link

ok here you go. I'm being lazy with the writing because I'm tired but check it out, its a really good song.

djdee (djdee2005), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 06:29 (nineteen years ago) link

(I think Tim will love this)

djdee (djdee2005), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 06:38 (nineteen years ago) link

Yr description makes it sound great dee but I'll have to wait until I visit my parents next to check it out...

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 06:43 (nineteen years ago) link

Single of the year. I love this song so much - the little guitar stabs and the "DING DONG DING DONG DING!"

I can't quite put my finger on what makes it so great - maybe how it seems like there's a Jay-Z-style guest verse right around the corner, but it never actually comes? (The Juelz Santana remix isn't bad, but I'll take the original every time.)

Amerie is so good. I have no problems with a scenario in which this song is "Crazy in Love"-level inescapable.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 07:03 (nineteen years ago) link

Ha ha - spot on.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 09:33 (nineteen years ago) link

in a shock move I adore this song! The mid point between "Get Right" and "Crazy In Love" (it's remarkable how much it sounds like "Get Right", actually, and while I love "Get Right" it also makes me realise how much better it would be if Amerie had sung it instead of J-Lo). Is there a consensus on how to pronounce Amerie yet? AAH-merie? AY-merie? A-merie?

the Bobby Valentino song is hot too, so swoonsome.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 10:12 (nineteen years ago) link

AM-erie (rhymes with scam), if Juelz is to be believed in the intro to the remix.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 15:35 (nineteen years ago) link

BTW, the song is on the Hitch sundtrack that has been out for almost a month in the US and is getting a Euro release next week.

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:55 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah, "Slow Down" is great. I like how it has the same drums that were on Timbo & Magoo's "Cop That Shit" and the Britney/Ying Yang song (way better than either of those, though). I think the song was big in ATL before Luda signed him to DTP.

the official word is that Eve will be on the "1 Thing" remix.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 18:03 (nineteen years ago) link

there's an unofficial 1 thing remix that's been floating around for months with jigga on it. it's taken from some other track -- i haven't heard it in so long i can't remember what song it was. encore, maybe?

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 18:13 (nineteen years ago) link

I kept reading the damn thread title as Amelie and thinking you were all a bunch of sick fucks.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 18:16 (nineteen years ago) link

I am considering going to see Hitch just for this song.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 23:34 (nineteen years ago) link

One word: DON'T.
It undoubtedly plays over the credits or some such shit.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 23:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Ah-ha! So you haven't actually seen it?

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 23:48 (nineteen years ago) link

i saw hitch on the weekend and didnt notice this song, and i've been loving it for a couple weeks now.

> Is there a consensus on how to pronounce Amerie yet? AAH-merie? AY-merie? A-merie?

Rhymes with "mammary." Which I wholly thought Luda would've made note of by now.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 02:30 (nineteen years ago) link

Ah, thanks to mark p I have now heard the goodness and good it is. I definitely did NOT expect that opening drum break and that pleases me.

Ah-ha! So you haven't actually seen it?

-- Alba (albab...), March 8th, 2005.

No, I haven't.
I haven't tried that new C2 coke or man-on-man sex or thumbscrews either.
I just have a feeling it's not for me.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 02:38 (nineteen years ago) link

shit, it's been 20 minutes, i should probably listen to this.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 02:42 (nineteen years ago) link

as pissed as I am that my computer just crashed three times, just hearing that surface noisy start and the vicious drum breakdown and then NANANANANA OH!

This is really becoming my new happy fallback track.

One Thing made me go back and blast Crazy in Love. Are there any other hot Rich Harrison tracks (besides Get Right)? Is Amerie's whole album produced by him?

Wookie Rookie - check out Kelly Rowland's "Can't Nobody" - how Rich Harrison got the "Crazy In Love" job.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 04:50 (nineteen years ago) link

another drumtastic Rich Harrison production: "Didn't You Know" by Tha Rayne f/ Joe Budden.

I totally didn't know he did "Can't Nobody", though, I love that one too!

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 04:58 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah all of Amerie's first album was done by Richcraft. Search in particular the absolutely amazing, unbeatable "Need You Tonight" and the hipster's choice, "Why Don't We Fall In Love (Richcraft Remix)".

I luv "Didn't You Know" as well.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 11:53 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm with Cozen on the 'I Just Died' love, but I don't have the whole album.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:04 (nineteen years ago) link

"I Just Died" is awesome too, but, like, SERIOUSLY, "Need You Tonight" for reals. It's astonishing from the very first lurch, like "One Thing" slowed to an almsot painfully sexy crawl.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:09 (nineteen years ago) link

I really need to hear this.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:19 (nineteen years ago) link

'didnt you know' = better than 'one thing', better than everything. ever. but buddenless version please

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:21 (nineteen years ago) link

omg richcraft is 24 years old?! that's just ... not right

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:31 (nineteen years ago) link

That would mean he was 21 when "Why Don't We Fall In Love" came out.

I'm 22 and I haven't done anything a hundredth as productive.

"but buddenless version please "

What's wrong with the Budden verse exactly prima? I prefer him muchly on "Whatever You Want" true.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:39 (nineteen years ago) link

exactly? who dares ask me what i exactly mean! ha no wait i'll have a look for it

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Ha ha I have always thought of you as a bit like the Wizard of Oz but that was the first good excuse for doing so that you've given me!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:56 (nineteen years ago) link

I heard a "1 Thing" remix featuring Fabolous. Are the drums sampled from anywhere anyone knows, BTW?

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 13:07 (nineteen years ago) link

also apparently the drums are sampled from "Oh, Calcutta" by the Meters, which surprised me

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 13:10 (nineteen years ago) link

There appear to be many, many remixes of this song already. On Usenet alone I spy the following:

Juelz Santana
Royce da 5'9"
Fabolous
Peedi Crakk
Vic Damone

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:43 (nineteen years ago) link

I hope the popularity of the "1 Thing" beat w/ rappers means that RH will have Timbaland-type career arc where he starts out working with R&B singers but eventually does mostly hip hop records.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 23:57 (nineteen years ago) link

i would find that saddening! 1. the world needs hot rnb more 2. rich's formalism already sorta comes from a mid-90s rap era (as well as other places yes); while i don't discount the idea he could do tremendous rap tunes in the future at the moment i would worry they would all sound like amerie / nas 'man up' (another new song off the lp) but without amerie's context enlivening nas' standardness

er by which i mean nas sounds refreshingly exciting on that tune as is

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Thursday, 10 March 2005 13:28 (nineteen years ago) link

but that said richcraft writing with a rapper in mind would obv (hopefully) be completely diff to judging rap guest verses. which leads me to -

'didnt u know'! which i found eventually, but shd never have bothered; generally i do have a distaste for rap guest verses BUT i dont want to sound like these ninnies who automatically hate all men, (y'know like those gender-agenda divs who didnt want jay-z on 'crazy in love' or say 'gully' is better than 'singalong') so i shd qualify it's mostly because they are often stuck on as an needless afterthought vague stab at extra popularity, which is resentibly patronising, and also that often the verses are quite crassly rubbish in terms of providing any interesting dialogue with the song, which i find to be the case on 'didnt you know', besides it being a lame verse as is. 'didnt u know' is a song of one voice plainly addressing another

I told you babe so many times
I would never hurt you
So why you actin so surprised
All you got to do is…
Is show me that you feel the same way I do
Didn’t you know it’s bout me and you?

y'know? no place for joey budden

one variation i will accept tho is that joe buds does sound quite good and live on this beat! so for instance altho jadakiss is a total dumbass on teedra moses' 'you'll never find' i dont mind so much cos jada's throaty burnished bronze is texturally v nice on that golden beat

maffew12, Saturday, 19 October 2019 20:07 (four years ago) link

I fn hate that cheap tinny sounding sample and the song has the bossy joylessness of enforced fun. The other terrible song of this era I hate is that one with Kelly Rowland and Nellie.

plax (ico), Sunday, 20 October 2019 07:35 (four years ago) link

I’m pretty ILX hivemind-ey but ngl I struggle to get into this one? The beat’s amazing but the chorus is a little too annoying.. “shrill” is the word that comes to mind

I will hear no bad words about nelly and kelly rowland’s dilemma though

josh az (2011nostalgia), Sunday, 20 October 2019 08:14 (four years ago) link

ooh I just remembered the Eve remix is a thing. Her verse is lots of fun

josh az (2011nostalgia), Sunday, 20 October 2019 08:16 (four years ago) link

“Dilemma” is cool because they tried to send a text using Microsoft Excel in the video. People were really really stupid with technology back in the day.

Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 20 October 2019 14:24 (four years ago) link

I figured that's just how things were done in Nellyville.

But I just Googled this and found that it almost started a class war. https://www.buzzfeed.com/ikrd/nelly-kelly-rowland-excel

This song is good & iconic but not my favorite of the rich Harrison x Amelie songs or rich Harrison songs proper .... as a song “get right” by jlo is better to me even if Amerie is obv >>>>

“Rollin down my face” by amerie is 🔥
