Sublime is classic. Love those reggae beats!

Andy Abraham, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

all you morons obviously don't know what good music is if you have anything negitive to say about sublime. not only were they CLASSIC but they were one of the most unique and talented bands of there time. no band has ever affected there genre of music the way that sublime did and i don't see it happing ever again. Cheers to Sublime one of the BEST bands EVER!! RIP Bradley.

St0nedBasterd, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

How can there be so much negative comments about a band that was so loved. I know why?, cause mainstream appeal has never accepted Sublime. Alot, of people posting here on this board remember the song "date rape" & "What I got" & everything else that was played off of self entitled "sublime". These are the same type of people who go through new favorite bands every week. What is the hottest new trend of music coming up. So of course Sublime they think sublime was a fad that has come and gone. If you really listen to all the albums this band is "Classic". So everyone one else can go listen to Limp Bizkit or linkin park. "Not me, Cause now a days all the songs on the radio all drive me crazy." Sublime is Sublime & allways will Be CLASSIC! RIP BRADLEY & LOU DOG

John, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Laughable.

Sublime were and a remain a dud not because their music was a "fad," but because at the end of the day it was pretty shallow stuff: nothing too great or original to say, and not too many original ways to say it. And before you start throwing words like "reggae" around, do your homework. Sublime were as credibly reggae as fuckin' Ace of Base. Moreover, white rock bands splicing reggae/dub influences into their work is hardly new or innovative when you factor in names like, oh gosh, I dunno....the CLASH, THE POLICE, PUBLIC IMAGE LTD., THE POP GROUP, THE SLITS, THE PAYOLAS, THE RUTS, let alone legitimate 2nd-wave Ska bands like THE SPECIALS, THE SELECTER, THE BEAT, MADNESS, etc. etc.

Alex in NYC, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I know why?, cause mainstream appeal has never accepted Sublime.

I find this particularly funny since I bet it was through MTV and a KROQ-style station that you heard of Sublime in the first place...you shouldn't be biting the hand that feeds. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 26 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

lmfao, ive seen some of the bands you guys praise so highly. so it makes a lot of the negative comments about sublime laughable. its hard to describe why theyre a classic, you just have to listen to it. in my opinion you guys dont know music if you cant give sublime and brad thier credit for what they put out with the resources they had. a true classic!

blyt3, Saturday, 27 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

also, i just wanted to add that alot of thier "shallow lyrics" weren't shallow at all, they were metaphoric and symbolic of other things. not everyone will understand that. to listen to one of the popular singles that got a lot of airplay you wont fully appreciate brad and the band as a collective's talents. alex, those bands you mentioned were good, and some influenced sublime. ill give you that, but none of them mixed it up like sublime did. each of thier albums were like puzzles. if you only listened to one track off of it, you only got a small piece, not the whole picture. and to the person that said sublime has the worst fans ever id beg to differ. just my .02

blyt3, Saturday, 27 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Are you *HONESTLY* suggesting that Sublime were more versatile or adventurous than the Clash or Public Image Ltd.? Have you never layed ears on, say, SANDINISTA or METAL BOX?!?!?!

Please get ahold of yourself and stay off that reefer, son!

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 27 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Sublime first became popular with their song date rape. And then they got popular after Brad died (RIP BRAD NOWELL 1968 - 1996) with their cd simply titled "SUBLIME" but if you think that sublime is a dud... you definately only heard the songs "date rape" and "what i got" you have to listen to more than a couple songs... you have to listen to the whole cd or it doesnt make sense... Sublime is a classic and will always be. you people who say that sublime sux and that the ziggins, the clash, grateful dead, ect. are so great, then listen to sublime... Those bands influenced sublime, sublime does covers from those bands and many other bands, you cannot say that sublime is a dud, they were the most talented band ever and they had a big influence on alot of people.

"Let the lovin let the lovin come back to me"

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 27 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm genuinely surprised Sublime had this much hate on the board. I always saw them as an ok band who had a couple decent hits, no more, no less. Heck, Bradley wasn't even alive when they struck it big so I've always seen them as kind of wallflowers. Perhaps not knowing the fanbase at the time saved my opinion of them.

''i thought that was parents. i thought your older brother was supposed to shake down all the cool stuff like Sublime and No Doubt.''

my parents don't really have much of an interest in music (which is OK).

My brother thinks i'm 'mad' (especially after he heard a bit of 'For Alto') so he won't listen to me!

''julio is korrekt, it is brothers not parents (generation gap = marketing scam)''

'ere we go, mark is using 'marketing' as a stick to beat me with yawn...

Jack Cole, Sunday, 28 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I actually started this thread 7 months ago. As far as my brother goes, half of the stuff he listens too is Sublime/311/Phish crap. but he also likes Jay-z and DMX so I can talk too him about that. My parents like Bob Dylan and The Allman Brothers so I'm cut off from them.

this is fucking music people. in my mind and my opinion sublime will always be a classic and ive heard alot of music. you cant give a definitive for sure answer for everything when music is concerned. you just listen to it. you like it or you dont like it. io respect everyones opinion that says sublime isnt a classic. but all the arguing in the world wont change my minf on this one cause i've liked almost everything sublime hads ever done and i cant say that about any other band. i guess we can agree to disagree on this one. cheers

i'll still rep for sublime especially the 4 track recorded "Robbin the Hood" which honestly is some of the best homemade dub ive ever heard in my life. his voice still makes me wish i could sing like that. the boy had soul.

charleston charge (chaki), Monday, 14 March 2005 22:09 (nineteen years ago) link

i used to love robbin the hood - havent heard that or anything else in years, but listening to my brand new copy of Early yesterday i realized that though they have diametrically opposed sensibilities there are some kind of parallels between how i liked Sublime and that era of Scritti Politti that i am now very fond of. right now I'd still have to say Sublime is a dud for the assy lyrics and fanbase.

artdamages (artdamages), Monday, 14 March 2005 22:48 (nineteen years ago) link

This is one of the bands that I go back and forth between loving or hating.

It’s the nostalgia goggles talking... they appealed to most people in college/late high school in the late 90’s and in the right context they were a perfect soundtrack, also the mid to late 90’s had some of the worst popular rock music so I’d still take the party playing Sublime over the party playing shit like Live, Our Lady Peace, Silverchair, Candlebox, et al.

If I take that goggles off they are frat white dude funk music that fails most of the time.

If I’m in one of those rare “every music I hear sounds great” phases, then I appreciate the quirkiness in his guitar playing and his voice, how good the bass usually sounds and the wasted potential. Usually I think they’re a very bland, mediocre band that just became this sort of flagpole music for a certain type of people because the singer offed himself right in the middle of their most succesful album.

For some reason I felt the need to put on "What I Got" for my 8-year-old tonight. Now, at a distance, I don't care anymore who used to be into this band. This song is perfect, so light and yet so rich in thrilling detail. Did people think this was supposed to be ska? It doesn't sound anything like ska. It sounds like itself. It sounds like what you wanted to sound like when you fucked around with your shitty acoustic guitar. This is some eternity-level pop.

I often think that Thanx would make a good poll, but every time I start to divide it up, it ends up looking like it would have to be 4 or 5 separate polls or something and I give up.

One thing that I learned from reading the lyrics though, is that there were sections that were largely dedicated to rap and reggae artists at the end that were cut from the CD versions. I had an old Skunk Records copy of the 40oz to Freedom cassette though and don't remember those verses being on there.

Alright, before we get it started:
When we did, "Smoke Two Joints", that was jacked from the Toyes
And that song, "Rivers of Babylon" was written by B. Dowe and F. McNaughton
