So, is it me? Or are the Black Eyed Peas really embarassing?

They seem like they could be the band to play at the Juice Bar in Power Rangers and teach everybody to have safe sex and say no to drugs and that people in wheel chairs aren't handicapped, they're handicapable.

Maybe, but that's hardly the point ("Isn't hip-hop supposed to be HARD?"). Limp old beats. Wack-ass rhymes.

Hip-hop is also ideally not supposed to suck completely.

i like how they make their videos look like the ads the songs in question have been featured in. it's a very troy mcclure touch. ('you may remember us from such campaigns as ...')

I don't care either way, they're lame and sound like something from the early 90s and remind me of DARE.

I think we're ultimately attacking the same problem.

Harold Media (kenan), Friday, 6 August 2004 01:23 (nineteen years ago) link

The early 90's were GREAT, mind you, but the early 90's warmed-over, not so much.

Harold Media (kenan), Friday, 6 August 2004 01:24 (nineteen years ago) link

i'm really disappointed with the route the black eyed peas decided to take.

"joints and jam" "weekends" and "request line" were quite enjoyable.

reo, Friday, 6 August 2004 01:43 (nineteen years ago) link

They always have been (and always will be) a great singles band. It's really a toss-up between "Weekend" and "Hey Mama" as to what their best single is.

Yeah, the girl in BEP is kinda hot - under the right lighting. On the other hand, I don't wanna fall in love... love cuts just like a knife.

"They're like the new Len."

Len disappeared after 3 months.

"They're the new Arrested Development."

The 4 Arrested Development songs that I know are listenable, while the only BEP song I can stomach is "Joints And Jams."

billstevejim, Friday, 6 August 2004 04:01 (nineteen years ago) link

It's true, Len did disappear after three months, but their one single was infinitely more enjoyable than 'Where Is the Love'.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 6 August 2004 05:03 (nineteen years ago) link

yes but len disappeared after three months because they didn't have a bounty of tv tie-in campaigns to which they could attach 'steal my sunshine.' truly we are living in wondrous times

A prank from the MTV show "Punk'd" has reportedly gone wrong when host Ashton Kutcher and crew attempted to trick Black Eyed Peas into a fake arrest. According to published reports, the BEP entourage began fighting with the shows fake cops after the attempted apprehension within a sex brothel.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Friday, 6 August 2004 14:04 (nineteen years ago) link

You Got Served 2

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 6 August 2004 14:06 (nineteen years ago) link

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 6 August 2004 14:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Okay, I've been hearing this song with a chorus that goes "let's get IT STARTED" and I know they have a song called "Let's Get Retarded" and when I sing THAT as the chorus it's a fucking dope jam. What's the deal? Is this one of those different-version-for-radio things? If so it fucking sucks.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 6 August 2004 14:14 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, it's a radio edit. I don't blame them for it although I don't really approve (they do use the original "Let's Get Retarded" in the promos for "Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle" so it IS being played on national TV, ha).

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 6 August 2004 14:16 (nineteen years ago) link

Next hip hop act to go embarassing mode will be The Roots! Heard their new album a few days back: it is another Universal Music sellout long-player that isn't a patch on their first 2 records.

I await the New Roots posts with much relish!

herbalizer12 (herbalizer12), Saturday, 7 August 2004 15:09 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm way more embarassed for the Roots than for the Black Eyed Peas (who have actually figured out how to cross over rather than flop around lamely at the starting gate for over half a decade)

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 7 August 2004 15:19 (nineteen years ago) link

the Roots could so wind up the Sonic Youth of rap

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 7 August 2004 15:19 (nineteen years ago) link

wait, so now Sonic Youth is embarrassing?

Joseph Pot (STINKOR™), Saturday, 7 August 2004 16:20 (nineteen years ago) link

They are now.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 7 August 2004 17:48 (nineteen years ago) link

oh, I disagree in a BIG way.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 7 August 2004 17:49 (nineteen years ago) link

As soon as a Roots apprentice blows up (Jean Grae, maybe?) they might finally submit to some "godfather" status rather than making lukewarm attempts at commercial breakthrough (I don't think they've got another "You Got Me" in them).

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 7 August 2004 17:56 (nineteen years ago) link

Regardless of whether or not they've ever "blown up" the Roots have actually released some really great material - which is something that cannot be said for the Black Eyed Peas.

"Joints And Jam"
"Clap Your Hands"
"Be Free"
"Movement"
"Be Free"
"Weekend"
"Hey Mama"
"Let's Get Retarded"

Has it been established that they have fucking horrible song titles?

"I Gotta Feeling" specifically is fucked since it literally means "I Have To Feeling."

circa the dutchess, when will.i.am was doing some really great production work and fergie was proving herself to be a surprisingly excellent pop star, i came round to the idea that BEPs were actually a pretty good thing, and now they just annoy me for not being better.

the only UK top 40 hit to use Gotta as Got A prior to BEP was Ice-T's 'Gotta Lotta Love' in 1994.

it's funny how this new song sounds like it could have come out in 2011. I don't know if that's refreshing or not, but this really feels like no time has passed between that era of BEP and now.

also hilarious that will.i.am jacked the most obvious Marley chorus for the hook.
