there are people IN COLLEGE right now who were born in 1990

Oh I know that -- I process library cards for 'em all the time now! More en route. Couple more years and they'll've been born the year I first came here for grad school.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 21:00 (fifteen years ago) link

And then soon after that they'll be saying things like "the 20th century? man, I wasn't even born then!"

snoball, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 21:02 (fifteen years ago) link

I like that, though! It's as it should be.

Kids born right now are in a world where there has never not been an iPhone, for instance. (And, maybe next year, where there's never not been a president Obama, say.)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 21:04 (fifteen years ago) link

I've actually wondered to myself, "I wonder if Beeps will tape songs off the radio like I did" before catching myself.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 21:07 (fifteen years ago) link

hahaha no jaymc, you didn't! awesome. I haven't heard from him and his ilk in many a year. M@tt Pr1ce and him stole D@n Sp1nab3lla's (aka the skateboarder I mentioned above) dad's credit card and went on a spree, and that was pretty much the end of that. Tim Mur@ri stopped by a few years after that, chubbier than ever, and said him and Jason were working at some mattress store in the city. Did he recognize you? Go back there and kick him in the pants for me.

Granny Dainger, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 21:08 (fifteen years ago) link

xpost -- and then she'll look at you funny when you absent-mindedly say that in a few years and go back to calling up a song via her ear implant.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 21:09 (fifteen years ago) link

LOL I skated Alameda on Saturday.

To be honest it was the first time I've skated in a while but still rofflez.

Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 21:11 (fifteen years ago) link

when my seven year old son says things like, "I don't like that sweatshirt, it's hip-hop style," I lose it. When I was a kid it was your nice clothes and your playclothes, dammit.

pj, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 21:14 (fifteen years ago) link

I went skateboarding for the first time in ages a couple years ago because the new town has a skateboard park. Being 32 at the time I prudently waited until my new health insurance had kicked in first.

joygoat, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 21:17 (fifteen years ago) link

Did he recognize you?

Nope. I didn't recognize him, either, until he gave me his business card, and I was like, wait a minute, where'd you go to high school? He said he didn't even remember my name, which isn't too surprising since we barely crossed paths. You don't forget a last name like Ra1nwat3r, though.

jaymc, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 21:21 (fifteen years ago) link

Being 32 at the time I prudently waited until my new health insurance had kicked in first.

haha! radical.

(so jaymc, did he look like a druggie? well wait, what mattress store manager doesn't)

This makes me want to curl up in a chair with a bottle of single malt and a glass.

Pancakes Hackman, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 23:01 (fifteen years ago) link

I still have my old video tapes with the Cure and Howard Jones and whatnot on them, I even watch them sometimes!
And some 10" records.
Thankfully I never had big hair. But I did have a Nik Kershaw shirt =(

Trayce, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 23:21 (fifteen years ago) link

Wait, when don't you want to curl up in a chair with a bottle of single malt and a glass? That sounds lovely.

Casuistry, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 23:28 (fifteen years ago) link

wait what happened to 10" records?

admrl, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 23:31 (fifteen years ago) link

Weren't they only ever a bit of a novelty thing anyway? I have a PWEI one.

Trayce, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 23:32 (fifteen years ago) link

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 23:35 (fifteen years ago) link

I think I've been enjoying my 30s more than I did my 20s, although "enjoying" is maybe not the right word there, but it'll do.

The decade's been great aside from the bits that weren't (small in number, happily). I dunno, I'm just kinda relaxed about it all.

And why shouldn't he? (I'm not being flippant at all, I just wouldn't be surprised at that -- then again you might not be surprised either!)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 05:42 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm not surprised, it's just one of those things that expresses the gulf between us. Like the way he has a better mobile than I do.

Dr. Superman, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 05:45 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm kind of surprised that you have a 15-year-old nephew!

Not as surprised as I am that my younger brother is also in his 30s now.

Casuistry, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 06:33 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah I still think of my little brothers as just that - even though both are in their 30s, married, with 2 kids each. They're further along the "grown up" path than I'll ever be! Tch no wonder they dont take me seriously.

Trayce, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 06:48 (fifteen years ago) link

Trayce, I love N Kershaw too. Still do. Remember how I drooled at the little midget. haha

Kids born right now are in a world where there has never not been an iPhone, for instance.

Dude, I know! When my daughter says:"That's mama's ipod." I freaked out at first realizing how different the world is for her. I am already thinking of her having an email address and chatting with strangers. Parents never had to do this back in the 80s: inside they were safe 'n' sound. Although I realize that's my old age talking, as I 'm sure kids now are accustomed to the dangers and on the whole know how to protect themselves.

1976 MOTHERFUCKERS

I've got lots of 10" records! I even have a triple 10" (Tall Dwarfs 3 EP's).

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 08:32 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, two words to anyone who thinks the 80s were a giant party time to be a teenager in: Reagan. Thatcher.

I remember the world before the internet. I can remember getting our first personal computer in the home. I remember PEN PALS. That you wrote to with actual PENS!!! I remember the first time I saw a floppy disc it seemed magical. The first time I saw a 3" disc, not to. I remember when CDs were supposed to be magical things that lasted forever. I remember Betamax, for f*cks sake.

Trayce, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 08:59 (fifteen years ago) link

I had an Italian pen-friend, she wrote me to in Italian...I couldn't understand a word of it, so I asked my Italian teacher - Mr. O'Hara - to translate for me, and he just laughed. The letters were always on pink scented paper. Proto story of my life. I wonder if she is on Facebook now?

jel --, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 09:02 (fifteen years ago) link

Ah, I do miss snail mail. I still have shoeboxes full of letters from friends.

Trayce, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 09:03 (fifteen years ago) link

We used to make an artform out of addressing envelopes. It become a problem when they started getting returned by the post office as illegible. How we'd pass along clippings from music magazines, with letters written on the back of them. I do miss that.

Late 30's have greeted me with: acid reflux, dry skin, dry eyes. Could be way worse, mostly just forces me into taking care of myself. My coca cola addiction continues unabated tho.

40th birthday coming up in two years - I remember my uncle for his 40th (or maybe 50th?) receiving a VHS featuring ppl from his life talking about him plus footage of his childhood and etc, and thinking "man, I want that for me too". Not really the kind of thing you can ask for without sounding like a total egomaniac tho lol.

Roz, I’m also 38. Good luck with the exercise routine, if it serves as inspiration, I’m in better shape now than I was ten years ago.

Goose Bigelow, Fowl Gigolo (the table is the table), Tuesday, 31 January 2023 12:19 (one year ago) link

I'm going to be 39 this year and should probably do the same. I've always been one of those people with a metabolism that kept me at roughly the same weight for decades despite eating whatever garbage I want (with no exercise beyond walking to and from the train), but I put on weight during the pandemic and it's still there. Not an issue at this time, but seems like the sort of thing that could snowball if I let it slide.

blatherskite, Wednesday, 1 February 2023 16:35 (one year ago) link

xposts thanks nxd, table

blatherskite, I’m in the same position as you - never exercised much at all until putting on weight during the lockdown which, along with back pain as a result of working from home, forced me to make some radical lifestyle changes. still struggle with finding motivation to exercise but I’ve cut out a lot of sugar and snacks from my diet which has helped.

About 12 years ago I found out that I really loved climbing, and stuck with it over the years— climbing a few days a week and bicycling to and from work while note imbibing too much alcohol keeps me in my good zone

eight months pass...

After my manager shared a picture of herself in 2007 and joked that we could think about where we were at that time (I was 20), I realized that I barely have any pictures of myself from my university years (I searched and found like 5-10 in my archives). There are a few trips with friends where I was clearly avoiding cameras, and trips on my own where I was snapping pictures of anything but myself, so there's a 5-year black-out from the last family pictures to my first relationship in 2010.

Otherwise, reading the conversation in the ILXORs in their 50s thread made me realize how good of an idea it was to marry in 2019 and have a kid in 2022, it's definitely a much better position to watch the world burn and start having grey hair.

Nabozo, Thursday, 19 October 2023 12:22 (six months ago) link

It's similar for me, but for technical reasons: any CD-Rs or memory cards containing digital photos from 2002-2011 vanished between apartment moves at least a decade ago, and I've long forgotten any early Photobucket or Flickr accounts I registered for when those debuted. Not that I took a lot of photos anyway, and smart phones came long too late to develop a selfie or reflexive photo-taking habit. Still, it was odd when my partner asked what I was like in high school, and I realized I didn't have a single photo to show her.

blatherskite, Thursday, 19 October 2023 14:32 (six months ago) link

two weeks pass...

That's a good point, the way of archiving photos has changed massively. I'm still attached to hard disks, even print pictures to put them in albums, while the cloud gives me whiffs of data being potentially wiped out (all very irrational).

Another thing related to the above that I have caught myself doing a bit more recently is to actively try to remember and visualize specific moments of my childhood / youth. I'm looking for flashes, or to remember how I felt, all from the concern that it's becoming hazy.

There might be few posters in their 30s left around here, but no reason that aging is reduced to colonoscopies and other picturesque experiences at the doctor :) For that matter, I haven't seen my doctor the whole year, it's good to be back to a state of prolonged healthiness.

Nabozo, Tuesday, 7 November 2023 08:48 (five months ago) link

Still have one year left! I legit believed I was turning 40 next year until very recently. Managed the same trick on my 29th as well! It's great, feel like I got a bonus year.

Is there a thread for ilxors in their 40's? A few days away and it's looking like my first order of business as a 40-year-old is gonna be scheduling a prostate exam 😳
Had a blood panel last week, A1C is 5.4 and cholestrol is off the charts. That was a real surprise.
When I had a worrying chest scan 9 months ago, the Yijing gave me the image of plugging a leaky old boat and suggested that I wouldn't be able to relax my vigilance anytime soon. oh, right- this isn't just about my lungs. Welcome to the new normal, get used to it. Gotta be much more careful from now on, and don't slip up.
In light of this, all that "age us just a number" stuff feels like a crock. Sucks not being young anymore LOL
