I was a nail biter until February (~25+ years) so I have to keep my nails perfect or slip back into the vicious cycle, like E. I did a coat today at work, which is why they look so nice. Heh.

Lechera, I might call your hands sinewy? Like a drummer's! They are hands that Do Work, skilled hands, hands that demand respect.
otm. they get the job done.

i love hands btw, men's and women's. even children's.

I enjoy this! Might attempt. Might print words out backwards so manicure text isn't backwards.

Cool effect but

However, it is still a trick that I wish to share with you as I’ve only seen alcohol used to rub newsprint into dull, grey nail polishes. Usually on those bone curdlingly cute nail blogs with names like Daydreams and Pedicures run by women who replaced their vagina with a rolled up Amelie poster many moons ago.

Reader, avoid such places and stick with me. I eat Manic Pixie Dream Girls and drink my feelings.

uh whoa
yikes

Oh, xojane is full of that crap - I didn't even notice. My endorsement extends to the technique only!

I defs have a love/hate relationship with xojane, I totally dig.

The technique is way cool, tho, was gonna do my nails today and I think I'll give it a go.

chupacabra seeds (Abbbottt), Wednesday, 4 July 2012 19:32 (eleven years ago) link

My nails have gotten super peely and my solution has been to cover it with nail polish la la la p sure that's not the solution.

chupacabra seeds (Abbbottt), Wednesday, 4 July 2012 19:33 (eleven years ago) link

idk man for me these turned out somewhere on the spectrum from 'subtle' to 'looks like I didn't wash my hands'

http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg195/scaled.php?server=195&filename=img2805kr.jpg&res=landing

I thought 'hey I'll watch Grey Gardens again' while doing this and tearing up newspaper to float it in booze while watching the Beales was maybe a terrible match because it enhanced a feeling of doing something totally deranged. But maybe it was a perfect match for this activity.

also now you guys know my secret – when I do my nails I just slop it on and wait for the extra to fall off my cuticles in the shower 10+ hrs later

chupacabra seeds (Abbbottt), Thursday, 5 July 2012 00:22 (eleven years ago) link

I do the same (polish to cover the peeling nails and removing the dried bits in the shower.)

tokyo rosemary, Thursday, 5 July 2012 02:06 (eleven years ago) link

I had a guy friend in high school who asked me to do his nails and of course I went even further outside the lines on someone else's hands. At the end he asked, "What did you do to me?"

chupacabra seeds (Abbbottt), Thursday, 5 July 2012 02:21 (eleven years ago) link

I used a regular top coat instead of a quick dry one last night. It was nearly a disaster.

I do both those things too - if I take a picture of my nails it's not until two days later usually :) I am so bad at it. Pity that turned out so faint! Did you grab the softest (did she say most porous? I'm on my phone) paper you could find? I'm thinking that lends itself to transferring,,but who knows..

Thx! It was a grocery store weekly ad, I'd reckon that's about as porous as they come.

Guys FYI avoid the new revlon neon nail polish. I wasted an hour and a half trying to apply the purple version last night. I think because you have to put on the white then a couple of coats of the color it get bumpy and ridgey and goopy and fwiw its not very neon at all

Ugh, yeah, that site. I usually stick to stuff by Leslie Kinzel and Marianne Kirby.

Speaking of Marianne Kirby, she writes a lot about nail polish!

I've been trying to take better care of my fingernails. Instead of cutting them when they start to bother me and occasionally paying a professional to hack off my cuticles, I'm cutting them, shaping them, rubbing them down with coconut oil, and pushing my cuticles back roughly weekly. So far so good!

I love fancy manicures but I lack the skill, patience, and supplies to do it myself.

Impulse bought some of them Sally Hanson nail stickers. I kind of like them! It's a fancy manicure that is pretty hard to fuck up.

That's the red lacy design. I was torn between that and the red stripe. This design is maybe too intricate and it gets lost in the shininess of the top coat (you don't have to do a top coat but I figured it couldn't hurt) so I'll try the stripe next.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 16:22 (eleven years ago) link

whoa fancy!

i finally bought a base coat (essie, of course) and did my nails on monday and they still look like new. so i guess base coat does make a difference!

there should be a word for the irrepressible need to do stuff while your nails are drying and inevitably fucking up your nails
because maybe this word, like, as mantra, would stop me

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 20:56 (eleven years ago) link

I, too, suffer from this irrepressible need. A quick dry topcoat helps, but not enough :(

Have you gals not had GEL or SHELLAC nails done yet?? It's amazing. I can't go back, now. NO MORE CHIPPING.

I've thought about it but I hear removal is kind of hell on your nails. I figured I'd save it for a special occasion.

I've heard shellac is amazing but you have to pay to get it off? I'm not down with that. :(

I would like more first-hand info, homoII! Is it something you have to get done in a salon, or are there home kits? How long can you go between gel jobs? Is there a difference between gel and shellac???

quincie, Friday, 27 July 2012 17:47 (eleven years ago) link

I've had it done maybe 4 or 5 times over the past two years. I like it a lot in terms of durability and how they look. What sort of bugs me is that it means I can't change the color for 2 weeks. That said, I think they're great for special occasion. I had one done earlier this month before I went away and it lasted 16 days before showing any wear at all but I probably could have left it on for another week if I really wanted to.

I acutally had one done this Wednesday too because the other one had treated me so well. I was going to get a very pale neutral color (because one of the bonus points of the shellac is that you can do nail are on top and remove that without removing the base) but my girl asked if she could do a fun color she liked and I wound up with this:

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Friday, 27 July 2012 17:56 (eleven years ago) link

oh wait - pic in a sec

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Friday, 27 July 2012 17:57 (eleven years ago) link

You don't have to pay to get it off. You can just soak in acetone for about 10 mins at home and then scrape it off. I've not had a problem with it being harsh on my nails. They sell at home kits too but they're $$ and I haven't tried any.

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Friday, 27 July 2012 17:57 (eleven years ago) link

Quice - Shellac is the brand name of the CND gel polish line. OPI also has one and another common on you see in salons is called Gelish.

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Friday, 27 July 2012 17:59 (eleven years ago) link

Thank you! I think I will give this a try!

ooooooooh I like that! What's it called?

quincie, Friday, 27 July 2012 18:03 (eleven years ago) link

idk! It was one of the Gelish ones. They have them numbered and pained on nail wheels which is also neat since you can hold it up to your hands and see the colors.

The color is a little off in that pic because of the office lighting but it's actually a really awesome perfect turqoise color. Not something I'd normally wear but I'm glad she convinced be because I like it.

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Friday, 27 July 2012 18:04 (eleven years ago) link

Very pretty! Glad they are not quite as hard to remove as I heard. Maybe I'll give it a shot next time I going to vacation.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Friday, 27 July 2012 18:14 (eleven years ago) link

That's what I was thinking - a good pre-vacation option. Gel manicure, leg wax, lash tint and then you can go somewhere warm and get wasted for a week and still look good in your pictures.

FFM, that's a great gradient manicure! Impressive.

ms. cookie (carl agatha), Friday, 27 July 2012 19:06 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, it's perfect for that.

Is lash tinting legal? My friend is a make-up artist/professional pimple popper and does extensions but it's SO EXPENSIVE. I really want to try it out but it's ridiculous.

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Friday, 27 July 2012 19:12 (eleven years ago) link

It's legal to do at salons but I think there's something about buying an at home kit that is more difficult. Didn't Laurel order a lash tint kit and try it at home once?

I think it's $20 where I go (fancy schmancy hair salon). I've done it a couple of times. I didn't like it the first time, but a different person did it the second time and it was much better. Lasts a couple of months and it's really nice in the summer when all my mascara would just run down my face in the hateful humid Chicago heat.

ms. cookie (carl agatha), Friday, 27 July 2012 19:17 (eleven years ago) link

Just checked - illegal in MA. :( It's a shame too cause I'd definitely do it. My bottom lashes are so blonde they're not visible unless I use mascara which one them which I've been doing all week and loving but it would sure be nice not to have to.

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Friday, 27 July 2012 19:22 (eleven years ago) link

Gelish is harder to remove than shellac. They are actually good for your nails because the top coats and what not keep them from peeling/breaking.

Erica I have a tutorial from Tumblr on how to do your own lash extensions... hold on let me find it.

homosexual II, Friday, 27 July 2012 21:08 (eleven years ago) link

Dang, putting on mascara every morning seems easier than putting on all those lashes every three days. That looks fun for special occasions, though.
