wait, unknowing racism is the worst kind?

how did we get here how? (ytth), Friday, 22 June 2012 03:52 (eleven years ago) link

yes. europeans were more racist before they had ever met africans than when they enslaved them.

here's my lumber, so jack me maybe (some dude), Friday, 22 June 2012 03:57 (eleven years ago) link

the subtext of that article makes it very clear the author is reaching to find things to hate about the show. "DREADING" the crack episode because the show would most likely show latino or black people smoking crack (and then chalking up the fact that it didn't to its overall racism) is an example... or the eventual claim that dunham's otherization of the rooftop partiers in coney island is the worst form of racism, no?

how did we get here how? (ytth), Friday, 22 June 2012 04:07 (eleven years ago) link

That recipe for roasted potatoes is pretty hilarious.

fwiw i once fell asleep on the F train and woke up in coney island and had no idea where i was even after walking through and out of the station

Next season, the African-American comedian Donald Glover has a role. Yay.

imo the sarcasm in this sentence is more racist than anything in the show?

carly rae (flopson), Friday, 22 June 2012 17:16 (eleven years ago) link

it's so annoying, the way she's just painting these doodling longwinded circles around why she doesn't like the show but she doesn't want to say she doesn't like the show. UGH and her handwringing over Bushwick Crackcident was clearly misplaced and yet it's half the article?

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 22 June 2012 17:31 (eleven years ago) link

like I'm all for criticism of the show but that just seemed like a waste of everyone's time including hers

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 22 June 2012 17:32 (eleven years ago) link

that essay got reposted on salon. apart from the sheer badness of the writing ('i sometimes hate-watched and sometimes like-watched' -- srsly, there are ACTUAL WAYS to express this sentiment without resorting to cutesy livejournal-isms), i can't get over how smug and insular the tone is. for all her complaints about the show being 'exclusionist' she writes like someone who's never had to talk to a person who disagrees with her.

also i must've missed all those scathing 'race critiques' of seinfeld she alludes to, ha.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Friday, 22 June 2012 21:09 (eleven years ago) link

i mean what does it say about the kind of insular world you live in if you actually believe that 'unknowing racism' is 'the worst kind' of racism?

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Friday, 22 June 2012 21:16 (eleven years ago) link

welcome to the new era of livejournal criticism :/

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 22 June 2012 21:25 (eleven years ago) link

i think it's that coy little 'no?' in 'the worst kind, no?' that gets me.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Friday, 22 June 2012 21:32 (eleven years ago) link

I parse most of these critiques as "how'd this spoiled rich girl get her own show when I'm still toiling with my shitty writing gig"

Darin, Friday, 22 June 2012 22:16 (eleven years ago) link

ts: knowing sexism vs. unknowing racism

Darin, Friday, 22 June 2012 22:17 (eleven years ago) link

I kinda hate donald glover

Authorities don't know who shot the 50 Cent the goose. (forksclovetofu), Friday, 22 June 2012 22:21 (eleven years ago) link

Racist.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Friday, 22 June 2012 22:23 (eleven years ago) link

So sad that Donald Glover is not related to Danny Glover cuz that would make more hilarious fodder for these nepotism arguments (so sad that peeps don't know what nepotism actually is.)

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Friday, 22 June 2012 22:27 (eleven years ago) link

yeah the nepotism thing has turned into 'everyone in this show is the progeny to someone famous omg nepotism even though none of the parents actually work on the show or or for the network'

omg someone really doesn't like this thing i like. let me take time out of my day to call them a shitty writer! take that, disagreement! you're written by a shitty writer because that writer's style, in the context of disagreeing with me, makes me angry! (of course if the article agreed with me, then probably i'd find the style endearing, but let's not go there...) lol, go back to livejournal, person with opinons other than mine!

s.clover, Saturday, 23 June 2012 07:26 (eleven years ago) link

its a reference to lena dunham talking about 'hate-reading' books

Black_vegeta (Hungry4Ass), Saturday, 23 June 2012 07:38 (eleven years ago) link

i've barely watched 'girls' at all but i'd find most of that article to be shitty, un-endearing writing in any context.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Saturday, 23 June 2012 07:47 (eleven years ago) link

Remind me again, what's the things the livejournal does that most media bloggers don't?

Andrew Farrell, Saturday, 23 June 2012 07:59 (eleven years ago) link

omg someone really doesn't like this thing i like. let me take time out of my day to call them a shitty writer! take that, disagreement!

so... there's no such thing as a shitty writer? or you're not allowed to think someone who disagrees with you is a shitty writer, even if their arguments are muddled and limply expressed and easy to demolish? or... sorry can't come up with a third option, maybe you can help me here?

Just saying. (stevie), Saturday, 23 June 2012 08:46 (eleven years ago) link

no we should all just be incredibly measured and give equal time to all opinions. because that would drive most everyone out of the thread and allow for more long-winded pondering.

zzzz

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 23 June 2012 08:52 (eleven years ago) link

i 'hate' to break it to you guys but at this point you're just 'hate-reading' coverage of the show that you disagree with

here's my lumber, so jack me maybe (some dude), Saturday, 23 June 2012 10:57 (eleven years ago) link

long-winded pondering drives ppl out of ilx threads? who knew?

s.clover, Saturday, 23 June 2012 15:25 (eleven years ago) link

your post was real talk btw

some dude, Saturday, 23 June 2012 15:32 (eleven years ago) link

there's a difference b/w hating something and trying to find some huge cultural taboo millstone to hang around its neck to prove that you're RIGHT for hating it. back in the parks and rec thread when history mayne was hardcore hating on that show, people argued back but no one was trying to sb him or calling him a bad poster, because it was clear that he just straight-up hated the show... and while it was a little trollish to keep on doing it for what seemed like years, he was content to say he hated it, found it contrived, found it unfunny, etc. it's fine to hate it, but when you're trying to defend your hatred of it by implicating people that like it as being complicit in some sort of racist-nepotistic cultural tidal wave, it goes beyond just expressing disagreement.

how did we get here how? (ytth), Saturday, 23 June 2012 17:50 (eleven years ago) link

btw it cracked me up when Marnie was longingly looking at Facebook pictures of the ex-boyfriend she was with for years and years and every picture was from the two weeks they were together after he cut his hair short, lol poorly planned production

some dude, Saturday, 23 June 2012 22:38 (eleven years ago) link

i thought she was looking at pictures of her old bf with his new gf when they were on holiday in rome since the split?

jed_, Saturday, 23 June 2012 22:51 (eleven years ago) link

feeling like we all lost a bit of our innocence in this thread when we realized we weren't going to be getting that big showbiz break because our dad wasn't the drummer in Bad Company.

Cunga, Saturday, 23 June 2012 22:54 (eleven years ago) link

best part of that Marnie scene was her listening to Demi Lavato's "Skyscraper"

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Saturday, 23 June 2012 23:11 (eleven years ago) link

xxp She was.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Saturday, 23 June 2012 23:12 (eleven years ago) link

yes that was pretty obvious but i had a double-think on it.

jed_, Saturday, 23 June 2012 23:13 (eleven years ago) link

oh n/m the dimness of the pictures made me just assume it was her, sorry

some dude, Saturday, 23 June 2012 23:19 (eleven years ago) link

i think i knew who was in the pictures the first time, forgot when i re-watched part of that episode today

some dude, Saturday, 23 June 2012 23:20 (eleven years ago) link

Dunham could have eliminated the possible confusion by casting the new gf as a black woman.

jed_, Saturday, 23 June 2012 23:21 (eleven years ago) link

lol

some dude, Saturday, 23 June 2012 23:27 (eleven years ago) link

should've cast donald glover as his new girlfriend

Authorities don't know who shot the 50 Cent the goose. (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 23 June 2012 23:47 (eleven years ago) link

I watched "Tiny Furniture" a year or so ago and still think about the mom. The way she'd pause, evaluate, then say "I don't care", not in a dismissive way, but as absolution. "I read your diary." *pause* "I don't care". Dunham writes her adult-adults well and I miss them in Hannah's world.

I mainlined this show this week and fell in love with Adam, christ. Except my weird crush started pretty much in the first episode, because I am creepy & gross. :) I suspect I'm not alone in saying he's a lot like a blend of my first few boyfriends out of high school, so it felt right. Loved the line about 'You chase me like I'm the Beatles.' Oh god, and 'Mexican teenager' and just in general the 'come upstairs' and 'Okay let's go fuck' kinda of lines. "Would you fuck four year old me? But I'm only two" was SO GOOD for how uncomfortable it made Marnie look.

Many things have been covered, I won't rehash, but in general I'm really happy to have the chance to watch these people (except Marnie, who is truly the worst, even if she does have a job). Weird use of Chris O'Dowd but I guess it's good for him to play against type! This show also made me realize that the lady who plays weeddad's wife and Ana Gasteyer are not the same people. Also, Bobby Moynihan! Weird, but hey - he was probably his least annoying ever.

r. in our fanfic I drown them in a river, lol

otm <3 When she wrote three different tweets then deleted all to put that trite out of context sentence of Jessa's (All adventurous women do?) I just wanted to punch her. And unfollow the girls I know who do shit like this. Also, every young woman should know how to sleep on the subway with your goddamn valuables tucked away.. moron.

if you get the tiny furniture criterion dvd you should watch 'creative nonfiction' it's pretty good
