I just reread THE MICRONAUTS while on a long trip to the land of black metal

WDYLL with modular lord of evil. We must be about the same age, Shakey. The wondrous era of toys that actually shot fucking tiny swallowable missiles across the room.

I forget who the other li'l micronaut on my right is there... but yeah, tiny missiles! that you could choke on! or put your eye out with!

I never had a Baron Karza, but had almost everything else. /jealous

One mad Xmas I got both Terraphant AND Hornetroid. It was all downhill after that.

Lewis Apparition (Jon Lewis), Friday, 22 June 2012 22:43 (eleven years ago) link

I had Repto and Acroyer and the Time Traveler. I desperately wanted Baron Karza but by the time I could have asked for an expensive figure like that I had moved onto Star Wars with my friends.

When I'm weak, I sometimes look up Micronauts toys on Ebay.

Matt M., Friday, 22 June 2012 23:07 (eleven years ago) link

I have to admit I would really dig having a Repto and a Membros. That little wave of monster dudes was pretty sweet.

Lewis Apparition (Jon Lewis), Saturday, 23 June 2012 02:23 (eleven years ago) link

Had the first wave of those. Thinking about acquiring another set, since I have no idea where any of my Micronauts toys went after I left for college.

Matt M., Saturday, 23 June 2012 03:49 (eleven years ago) link

I just finished the first volume of MICRONAUTS and it's all over the place. Whenever they come to Earth it sucks balls, but when they're in the Microverse it ranges from solid to WTFAWESOME. The last year or so - once Butch Guice comes on board - are almost all killer.

Reading them I realized how haphazard my collecting was back in the days of limited allowance and spinner racks. The first issue I owned was #12, which I surely bought just because it was all about Acroyear whose toy I loved. But I didn't buy another until #53. Then I had all but a few till it ended.

And this? This might be the worst drawing of Arcade I've ever seen. His head changes shapes and sizes and features in every panel of his cameo.

looks like gil kane inked by... danny bulandi? armando gil? pablo marcos? someone like that. kane = one of the greats but obv totally oblivious/uninterested in x-men villains, and the inking is horrible.

Ward Fowler, Tuesday, 26 June 2012 22:06 (eleven years ago) link

Good call Ward! Kane & Bulandi. I'd love to see some unlinked Kane micronauts, because god does Bulandi fuck him over again and again.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 26 June 2012 22:15 (eleven years ago) link

iirc there are some micronauts issues that kane inked himself, that are a bit better, tho' not everyone i know is a fan of kane's (marker) pen line, and he wasn't in the best of health or esp invested in the stories at the time. but yeah, bulandi is the kind of inker that saps away the remaining gd bits of kane, eg the dynamism & vitality of his drawing

Ward Fowler, Tuesday, 26 June 2012 22:19 (eleven years ago) link

There is only one or two stories worth of Gil Kane-inked MICRONAUTS which look immeasurably better than anything of his that Bulandi inked. But Bulandi looked good (mostly) on Butch Guice. Go figure.

I had a chance to buy some MICRONAUTS pages from Mr. Bulandi at a Wonder-Con a couple years ago and regret that I didn't.

The last part of the first volume is definitely WTFAWESOME territory. There's a lot more WTF going on in the Peter Gillis-scripted NEW VOYAGES.

Matt M., Tuesday, 26 June 2012 23:04 (eleven years ago) link

I'm taking a break before diving into NEW VOYAGES. Rereading Marvel's original SECRET WARS for the first time on 20-odd years. My Zeck fandom still in fine form.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 26 June 2012 23:42 (eleven years ago) link

tho' not everyone i know is a fan of kane's (marker) pen line,

Kane is always the best inker for Kane IMO

I remember these, though I only ever read one or two issues. Did the toys come before the comics or was the whole thing conceived as a cynical attempt to sell toys?

The New Dirty Vicar, Saturday, 30 June 2012 20:44 (eleven years ago) link

The toys came before the comics and Marvel got the license to make the comic like they did with Star Wars, Rom and later GI Joe and the Transformers.

earlnash, Sunday, 1 July 2012 01:19 (eleven years ago) link

Additionally the toys were from Japan, originally, branded as Micromen, if memory serves.

Ampzilla was a character who was much cooler as a toy than as a member of the evil Death Squad....

one year passes...

So basically this series is never going to be republished, is it?

This series (and ROM) is going to be republished.

TY. More interested in a collection of Kirby's 2001, personally, talking of titles not owned by Marvel that have never been reprinted (although I see online that other publishers produced Micronauts comics after Marvel, and that Marvel have now regained the licence).

A little while ago I bought the first instalment of this UK SF series, which predates the Marvel Comic by a couple of years

Remember reading The Micronauts (possibly the second series) when I first got into Marvel comics aged 10 or so, and thinking it impossibly awesome while also understand not a frame of it.
