reading jillian lauren's memoir about living in a harem with the prince of brunei

Oh! Was she one of those ppl paid thousands to get flown over there and then just hang out and look pretty at parties? That whole thing is so weird.

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Wednesday, 20 June 2012 15:02 (nine years ago) link

yup - i heard an interview with her and was so taken that i bought her book. now i am reading it.

game of crones (La Lechera), Wednesday, 20 June 2012 15:07 (nine years ago) link

I might check it out. I always thought it was interesting that it actually wasn't a sex thing and that (as far as I understand it) they were treated well and showered with gifts and that for most of them the biggest problem was boredom and being away from home.

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Wednesday, 20 June 2012 15:22 (nine years ago) link

Oh, that's weird -- from what I gather it was definitely a sex thing. What I like about it is that she totally seems like a real person by virtue of how clearly she illustrates what was going on -- she's really good at writing about her own life and communicating who she is (or who she wants us to think she is) and also moving the story along.

x-post - Interesting! I know that there were several of them there at any given point. Maybe for some it was a sex thing and for others it wasn't? Huh.

game of crones (La Lechera), Wednesday, 20 June 2012 16:22 (nine years ago) link

I know it sounds weird but I really do feel sometimes like I have this new, intensive hobby called baby-raising. You read all these books, you obsess over various decisions about care, you carefully follow every new micro-development.

Oh I am also into expensive honey in a spoon, that is amazing, fixes you right up.
