Shintaro Sakamoto's "How to Live With a Phantom" kinda has a Kaputt thing goin on, I like it. Solo record by the ex lead singer of Yura Yura Teikoku on Other Music's record label.

Destroyer will embark on a solo acoustic tour in November, and tickets are selling fast. This will be your last chance to see Destroyer live until 2015! A full list of dates is below.

if i'm only in to kaputt, is this worth going to see?

yes because you should be into more than kaputt

if i'm only in to kaputt, is this worth going to see?

for you -- probably not? hard to say what it will be until he starts doing the shows.

I'm a fan of pretty much everything he's done though ... think I'm gonna go to the Bowery Ballroom show.

I'd imagine if he plays anything from Kaputt it would be in a radically different form.

just checked and its almost sold out, but is also walking distance from my house... i will keep you guys updated.

kaputt's such an incredible record (my favourite of the decade) that I'm scared to listen to anything else he's ever done. Am I cutting my nose off to spite my face here?

the Shearer of simulated snowsex etc. (Dwight Yorke), Friday, 13 September 2013 00:14 (ten years ago) link

his other work is not really like kaputt in terms of mood or atmosphere but i mean, if you like his voice, his humor, his lyricism, there's plenty to like. the malkmus comparisons used to get thrown around a lot more often but it really is true in a lot of ways

where do I go next? shout out an album and I'll grab it.

"destroyer's rubies" is the consensus choice i think, or at least it was until kaputt came out

I feel like Your Blues is the most tonally similar to Kaputt. It's from 03 or 04 but a lot of the ideas in it are ones he returns to on Kaputt, and it's the least "indie rock"-feeling albums of his the pre-Kaputt work.

Clay, Friday, 13 September 2013 00:42 (ten years ago) link

None of his other records are mixed to "fighting form" imo. Kind of never seemed necessary to my ears, his lines have always been too good to need Kaputt's sheen. "Your Blues" is my favourite but it sounds like a Kevin Blechdom record. "Rubies" is pretty classic, great vocal delivery.

I have to say that Streethawk and This Night are my two favorites behind Kaputt, which I guess isn't consensus but check them both out.

Another vote for Streethawk

Streethawk and Rubies.

yeah Rubies is great.

Old Boy In Network (Michael B), Friday, 13 September 2013 10:07 (ten years ago) link

Such a great sound to Rubies, awesome guitar tone, great drums. All his records sound really good, even if the midi one is a bit weird.

I'd say Streethawk, Your Blues, Rubies and Kaputt are the essential Destroyer albums. Pretty much every album (except maybe for his very early stuff, which I never really got into) has its moments though.

If you like Kaputt, check out "Shooting Rockets" off of Troube in Dreams. Seems like an early attempt at the kind of stuff he would end up doing on Kaputt.

silverfish, Friday, 13 September 2013 13:54 (ten years ago) link

Rubies is the only other one besides Kaputt that I've really enjoyed. Haven't really been able to connect with the others.

What do people make of it? Is anyone familiar with Sr. Chinarro?

will.i.an (cajunsunday), Monday, 7 October 2013 17:39 (ten years ago) link

that's rubbish. i am not sure but maybe the only spanish music that works for me is flamenco. it has also the advantage that it doesn't have lyrics. spanish singing usually turns me off, more than most other languages, i don't know why.

Okay, so this album has suddenly clicked. I think when it came out there was a lot of anti-retro sentiment flying around and I became too caught-up in this record's reference points and influences to really enjoy it properly. Kind of loving it now.
