three months pass...

uhhh so the newest (awful) single is apparently #1 on the hot 100 now. when i first heard it i actually thought it would be squarely rejected by the public because it sounded so bad to me but APPARENTLY i was wrong. i should have known better considering that the gym class heroes/adam levine single was such a big hit earlier this year or last year or whenever that was.

teledyldonix, Thursday, 20 September 2012 08:22 (eleven years ago) link

Ehh, it's fine. After the double whammy of "Moves Like Jagger" and "Payphone" it seems pretty innocuous and hard to get mad at, kind of minor though, all the same. Kind of funny tho to go "oh of course it's a hit" cause of that Gym Class Heroes joint that everybody's already forgotten, instead of, you know, the two huge hits that immediately preceded this one.

haven't heard it in a while but "payphone" is dope iirc?

Maroon 5 have entered the 10,000 Maniacs phase of their career in which the lead singer humors a band that barely sounds like it's playing on their own record.

did they ever not sound like that, though?

da croupier, Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:15 (eleven years ago) link

If you ever want to be bored, listen to the "commentary track" version of this album on Spotify, as members of the band (or possibly Levine, with voice-shifting technology) riff without intensity about the songwriting process.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:17 (eleven years ago) link

I own the second one and they still sound like a band playing distinct parts; they hadn't yet been Pro Tooled to sound like the aural equivalent of one of Levine's tats.

ha – "riff without intensity" is what these guys once did

it's definitely gotten more extreme, i'll admit

songwriting credits on the new album suggest an album frontloaded with songs levine did with pros, with two other members allowed to fill in the second half.

you guys ever heard kara's flowers? when levine and co were going for that fountains of wayne/possum dixon vibe

huh, wow. No, never heard, it's almost worth pulling up on Spotify for less washed-out sound. Utterly generic in that "I think I've heard this hook before somewhere" way and not exactly punching its way out of the speaker but not the worst generic 90s-style power-pop you'll ever hear.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:28 (eleven years ago) link

they played state college while promoting that album and bonded with some of the local music dudes, who then spent the latter half of the '00s going "wtf" at maroon 5's success. I love that maroon 5's narrative - failed late '90s alt-rock band breaks up after brief painful major label experience, singer gets more into classic rock/r&b and brings back the posse, sign to big indie and PROFIT - is the same as Spoon's. Only Britt kept the old name.

i still find their turn into an adam levine sell out machine to be generally regrettable but red pill blues was half-written by john ryan and so i kinda fuck with it
