my girlfriend heard me listening to "One in a Million" the other day. When the lines "Immigrants and faggots / They make no sense to me / They come to our country / And think they'll do as they please"came on, she perked up and said matter-of-factly, "Faggots come from Faggotland." LOLZORS

Sigggghhhh. The two phrases relate to the two groups separately. It's a lyrical trick. The next line makes it clearer "Like start some mini-Iran, or spread some fucking disease."

... you realize your "defense" makes no sense and that followup just makes it seem even more like Axl thinks gay people come from another country, right
― Victory Chainsaw! (DJP), Friday, 15 June 2012 18:23 (eleven years ago) link
The more I reflect on these lyrics, the more I realize that the sentiments perfectly articulate many of the preoccupations of modern day tea partiers: gays corrupting the moral underpinnings of society; blacks maintaining a threatening presence just by being in the presence of whites; malevolent middle easterners deliberately destroying the nation while taking umbrage under American laws; and a general sense of fear-induced xenophobia, with the narrator's yearning to just be left alone by everyone, almost like a separatist.

nothing in get in the ring is as cringeworthy as "what's so civil about war, anyway?" or "human grocery store, ain't that fresh"
two of the most embarrassing lines ever sung by anybody

"Get In The Ring" belatedly became one of my favorite GNR songs when i started revisiting UYI the last few years, it's so insanely catchy

yes indeed. If Axl hadn't actually held a lot of the beliefs in the song I'd be more comfortable saying it's a masterpiece.

Can't wait to see the biopic coming out with him played by Danny deVito:

doesn't everyone?
― keeping things contextual (DJP), Friday, 27 July 2012 17:33 (eleven years ago) link
i think what that really means is that he wears the gold chains all the time. i mean he can't just put them on whenever he dons the bathrobe to go out to the ice machine, can he?
― j., Friday, 27 July 2012 17:35 (eleven years ago) link
maybe when he sang that he "don't wanna buy none of your gold chains today," it meant that he would come back tomorrow and buy them (and never take them off).

are you sure it's gold, what if it's, like, beads. of some spiritual kind.

You guys've been missing out on the revive of this:
Did you really feel "welcomed" to the jungle by axl rose, or do you think that was sort of just insincere, halfhearted graciousness?

the one that gets revived
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 25 October 2012 17:22 (eleven years ago) link
I just posted the link upthread..?
― Mule, Thursday, 25 October 2012 17:22 (eleven years ago) link
So whichever GNR thread has been revived most recently becomes receptacle for all things GNR? Whatevs. I can work with that. Though I just assumed that cheeky thread title meant it was about Axl specifically, or "Welcome" specifically.
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 25 October 2012 17:24 (eleven years ago) link
Alright, no biggie. But since you posted a vid of Axl desperately attempting to sing his way through "Welcome..", I thought it would interest you that this particular video has been discussed in that partiular thread for a few days now.
― Mule, Thursday, 25 October 2012 17:32 (eleven years ago) link
Good to know! What else is being discussed in other threads, while we're here?
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 25 October 2012 17:33 (eleven years ago) link
Well, forget it then. Didn't mean to start anything, though it seems I did..

I, for one, am ashamed and disappointed in myself for participating in this revive. I'll be taking a brief respite for reflection and to spend time with my family. With Christ's help, I hope that I can avoid any further grievous lapses in judgment.

Been listening to Appetite a bit lately. Nonbelievers, I think if you're willing to listen with new ears, you'll find a phenomenal album of surprising complexity and quality. I think there's only one song that doesn't completely kick ass ("anything goes"). The riffs are unstoppable.
― Poliopolice, Sunday, 28 October 2012 14:56 (eleven years ago) link
I really don't think appetite would rate any higher in people's unbiased minds than say a motley crue record. (I personally like Mr. Brownstone better than Dr. Feelgood, but this is all stripper music, basically)
― Philip Nunez, Sunday, 28 October 2012 15:55 (eleven years ago) link
I don't want to see strippers dance to "Mr. Brownstone".
