I just heard Miho on a Towa Tei album, was pretty good too! But I don't understand why people like this group :S

Awww. Well I have an embarassing past as a Sean Lenon fangirl (thanks to seeing him open for Beck in..98?)
Through Sean, I got into Cibo Matto and Yoko Ono and stopped listening to his stuff.

it's so cool that Yuka Honda is married to Nels Cline, never would've guessed 15 years ago that they'd even cross paths musically

I was really obsessed with Stereotype A when I was like 16-17. I find it nearly unlistenable now. It's funny how the brain changes.

CIBO MATTO TO RELEASE HOTEL VALENTINE FEBRUARY 14
FIRST RECORD SINCE 1999

Chimera Music is excited to announce the release of Hotel Valentine, Cibo Matto's first record since 1999 Coming out on February 14, 2014, the album was self-produced over a two-year period by Cibo Matto founders and co-conspirators Miho Hatori and Yuka C. Honda. Helping to create the kaleidoscopic, post-regional grooves and funky blasts of pure danceability on Hotel Valentine are guitarist Nels Cline, drummer Glenn Kotsche, percussionist Mauro Refosco, vocalist Reggie Watts, trumpeter Michael Leonhart, trombonist Aaron Johnson, Douglas Wieselman and many others. Hotel Valentine is their most impressive release to date as it finds them constructing a rich concept album, a love story amid the ghosts traversing the hallways of a hotel. Underneath the lush sonic palate, they have created the soundtrack to an invisible film as they've continued to refine their sound and remain fully committed to an ethic of fun.

The first track the band is sharing from Hotel Valentine is "MFN." The colorful, avant-psychedelic video was directed by Georgia.

Following the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011, Cibo Matto announced a reunion at a benefit concert in New York City. From that point, they continued to perform and tour sporadically while working on new material.

Says keyboardist/sampler Honda, "Having spent some time apart, we became more aware of our magical chemistry, our magnetic bond. We both realized we had unfinished business."

On February 14, 2011 a Cibo Matto light bulb flickered and they struck upon the idea of an invisible film, a score without motion, an album called Hotel Valentine.

Hotel Valentine is a metaphor, a question, an answer, an idea, a feeling; A strange and vivid scene.

"Hotel Valentine is the cinematic bricolage of Yuka and me," says vocalist Hatori. "Our medium is music. For me, making an album is like raising a child. We don't know what kind of person (story) they will end up to be."

I was huge into Stereotype A back when it came out too, and I still like it more than the debut; I think I've defended it somewhere on ILM. Kaleidoscopic is a word that gets thrown around too much, but it fits that album perfectly. Will hesitantly check out the new album. Has anyone seen 'em live - how were they?

Vinnie, Friday, 13 December 2013 14:17 (ten years ago) link

They're both great albums IMO

KMFAO (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 13 December 2013 14:43 (ten years ago) link

Cibo Matto (like Seefeel) are one of those bands that I have not found a single other band that really sounds/feels like them or captures their vibe; I basically have two albums in an entire (micro)genre to listen to and I'm super stoked abt adding a third

KMFAO (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 13 December 2013 14:44 (ten years ago) link

At the time, I thought Stereotype A was horrible. The last time I listened to it, it was okay but boring.

The debut remains one of my favorite albums of all time.

SHAUN (DJP), Friday, 13 December 2013 14:47 (ten years ago) link

I've defended Stereotype A here before, too. It pales only in comparison to the debut. On its own terms, it's quite good if not great, but it's also a much different animal than V!LW. I love them both.

Why is it that no national/international bands I wanna see in 2014 are playing Baltimore? DAMN.

Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 15 January 2014 01:53 (ten years ago) link

They're playing DC - just a stone's throw away! I'm planning to see them when they come in Feb.

Vinnie, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 14:56 (ten years ago) link

It's an issue because I live in northeast PA and hate driving in DC.

Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 15 January 2014 15:22 (ten years ago) link

afriendlypioneer, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 15:23 (ten years ago) link

They're playing Philly - just a ston'es throw away! I'm planning to see them when they come in Feb.

queen bey backers (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 15 January 2014 19:49 (ten years ago) link

Haha I was thinking about making that post myself Stevie.

I basically think of Baltimore as DC, considering bands usually play one place but not the other - can't count how many times I've gone up there for a show. But driving in DC ain't fun, that's for sure.

Vinnie, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 20:59 (ten years ago) link

Philly show has a capacity of like 120 though and is sold out :-/

in other news I might pee when I see them

Viva! LA woman has gradually become one of my favorite albums from the mid-90s. It’s quite the creative take on trip hop and I’m not sure I’d even classify it inside that genre. It’s too zany and closer to Beck than say Portishead.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 03:17 (five years ago) link

I tend to lump it almost closer to Hello Nasty era Beasties, and Grand Royale type stuff than most trip hop.

MarkoP, Wednesday, 27 June 2018 03:45 (five years ago) link

It’s better than that shit xxxtentacion thrash

stoker (Ross), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 12:25 (five years ago) link

is that supposed to be funny, controversial or just a stupid non sequitur ?

(•̪●) (carne asada), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 13:06 (five years ago) link

I know it's canonical to a lot of ppl but it still feels underrated to me, it's such a fun, funny, unique record, kind of B-52's-y in the way it manages to be silly without being frivolous or novelty bcz it is so musically skillful

the masseduction of lauryn hill (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 14:22 (five years ago) link

The vocal performances are always enthusiastic which makes it feel more like punk-hop. The beastie boys comparison is apt I think.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 16:23 (five years ago) link

Sugar Water is one of those iconic mid-'90s tracks for me, it's got a particular haunting vibe and one of the best music videos of its time.

omar little, Wednesday, 27 June 2018 17:11 (five years ago) link

It samples Morricone and the Cure so maybe that’s where the haunting vibe comes from?

For whatever odd reason I've pumped "Know Your Chicken" 5 or 6 times in the past few months and it still bangs.

billstevejim, Thursday, 28 June 2018 03:49 (five years ago) link

I stumbled into Cibo Matto by accident with I “Know your chicken”... it was back in the Napster days, I was looking for something else entirely but I got curious and downloaded it.

It was such an addictive and groovy thing... but also I was 14 and felt too self-conscious to share it with anyone else at the time. I just knew it was one of those songs that would give you weird looks from most people if played out loudly or even worse, it would get a snarky observation that might ruin the whole song for me. So I saved it for myself for years until I stopped caring.
