smh & age to go tabloid, printing presses closing, 1,900 jobs to go

Autumn Almanac, Monday, 18 June 2012 00:17 (eleven years ago) link

oh and rinehart to turn the whole thing into her own personal fucking megaphone

Autumn Almanac, Monday, 18 June 2012 00:18 (eleven years ago) link

on the upside behind a paywall nobody will read it anyway

relatively joan rivers (electricsound), Monday, 18 June 2012 00:27 (eleven years ago) link

this is devastating tbh, not sure how I will be able to read republished mashable.com articles

Autumn Almanac, Monday, 18 June 2012 00:40 (eleven years ago) link

good friend of mine writes for SMH, she's overseas on a holiday at the mo, fuck I hope she doesn't come back to a dole queue.

Pureed Moods (Trayce), Monday, 18 June 2012 01:08 (eleven years ago) link

rinehart is the devil.

estela, Monday, 18 June 2012 01:12 (eleven years ago) link

rineshart, morelike

paywall and tabloid (or berliner) issues not a big deal* if they enable the continuation of a major non-Murdoch voice and reporting. Rinehart's storming of the board would make the existence of such a voice nigh-pointless, and makes me mildly creeped out at whoever the anonymous shareholders I'll never meet that rolled over for her last week are

*big picture; apart from major job losses, offsetting of priting costs for other companies, and worry for ppl I know who work for Fairfax

Yep, I agree. I would happily pay for a paywalled online news service that was trustworthy, full of professional journos and proper research and NO FUCKING COMMENT SECTIONS.

Pureed Moods (Trayce), Monday, 18 June 2012 02:07 (eleven years ago) link

tabloid (or berliner)

'compact', apparently!

l'battered savventura (haitch), Monday, 18 June 2012 02:14 (eleven years ago) link

from the Age's article comments:
I buy the Herald Sun and Oz on most days but have deleted them from my favourites list because I can't read them online anymore. I read The Age online and buy it sometimes but if goes behind a paywall it'll fall off my radar

This would go some way, perhaps, to explain the flood of righty trogs that have appeared all over the paper's comments in the last year or 2. "oh i cant read the paper I like anymore so I'll just read this one, and froth angrily when thry dont tell me the news the way I want to hear it raarghwrtgr"

Pureed Moods (Trayce), Monday, 18 June 2012 03:49 (eleven years ago) link

oh god you're absolutely right

Autumn Almanac, Monday, 18 June 2012 03:53 (eleven years ago) link

Yep Ive just read 2 or 3 more "I used to read HS but switched to Age when paywall went up" comments. Never occurred to me before (in fact I had no idea news.c.a had been paywalled! I dont read it).

Pureed Moods (Trayce), Monday, 18 June 2012 04:03 (eleven years ago) link

it explains so very much

Autumn Almanac, Monday, 18 June 2012 04:12 (eleven years ago) link

it's sad they're closing the printing press out near the airport. it's such a crazy-lookin' building!

l'battered savventura (haitch), Monday, 18 June 2012 04:18 (eleven years ago) link

And so new! It cost millions to build, and theyre gonna close it in .. what, that'll be barely 10 years wont it? Such a waste. Fuckn.

Also, if theyre closing both plants where are the papers gonna be printed?

Pureed Moods (Trayce), Monday, 18 June 2012 05:12 (eleven years ago) link

Said friend who is smh journo has just posted , from her hol in the US, a horrified "wtf just happened do I have a job to come back to!?!?" post on FB :|

Pureed Moods (Trayce), Monday, 18 June 2012 05:13 (eleven years ago) link

they're not getting rid of ppl RIGHT NOW, there'll be redunancies sought in the next couple months. then the knifings start, presumably.

A month or two ago a plumber fixed our blocked kitchen drain by dislodging a massive bolus of congealed fat which erupted all over the backyard. I refer to this blockage and its after-effects as the Gina Rinehart.

no I'm not gonna pay gina rinehart for gerald henderson and cutted & pasted mashable articles

how baout 'the voice' and 'masterchef' 'recaps'

l'battered savventura (haitch), Monday, 18 June 2012 14:12 (eleven years ago) link

nothing in the fairfax slide pack said anything about increasing the quality of journalism iirc

Autumn Almanac, Monday, 18 June 2012 22:48 (eleven years ago) link

Surprised at how Fairfax is not even attempting to put soem sort of positive spin. I mean, if you wanted your remaining advertisiers/readers to give up on you, thinking you've got nmo future, you'd make the sort of display they've been doing.

an inevitable disappointment (James Morrison), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 00:50 (eleven years ago) link

That post is basically illiterate. I hope you see what I mean.

an inevitable disappointment (James Morrison), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 00:50 (eleven years ago) link

the spin is 'watch out for the evil gina' tbh

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 01:01 (eleven years ago) link

OK I read that as "watch out for the evil 'gina" and .. well o_0

Gentlemen Take Instagram Photos (King Boy Pato), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 09:09 (eleven years ago) link

i just checked again on your behalf and it turns out it's even more of a vain hope than a hobby.

owwwwww

Pureed Moods (Trayce), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 09:40 (eleven years ago) link

thanks, i'm gonna go and buy me a book of pithy one-liners to compensate

Gentlemen Take Instagram Photos (King Boy Pato), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 09:45 (eleven years ago) link

i had one of those once, it was from the 60s, i think one-liners were different back then

I was skyping with my gf in Melbourne and she had me check she wasn't imagining it. I didn't realise Melbourne had earthquakes as often as it seems to.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 13:09 (eleven years ago) link

best quake-related gag i saw: "My first thought was 'Godzilla' and not 'earthquake', which is troubling"
