is loving Get In The Ring like loving Megashark Vs Giant Octopus? i think i could understand that :)

"Get In The Ring" belatedly became one of my favorite GNR songs when i started revisiting UYI the last few years, it's so insanely catchy

bronytheus (some dude), Thursday, 14 June 2012 23:27 (eleven years ago) link

see I dig a lot of UYI, but Get In The Ring just makes me cringe now
I can't stand it

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 14 June 2012 23:31 (eleven years ago) link

yeah it grated for a long time, but now it just feels so goofily triumphant -- those huge swinging slash leads, the title chant, duff's final rant, it's glorious.

bronytheus (some dude), Thursday, 14 June 2012 23:35 (eleven years ago) link

It's just so unhinged but oddly funny in a stupidly endearing sort of way. Like, the ridiculous rhyme scheme of those first lyrics I quoted, which end in the grunt of "pain." And the way the other lyrics I quote don't even work rhythmically.

Also awesome because a couple of those dudes accepted Axl's challenge to fight and we wimped out.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 15 June 2012 11:50 (eleven years ago) link

haha really? hilarious

bronytheus (some dude), Friday, 15 June 2012 11:53 (eleven years ago) link

And my personal fave:

I don't like you, I just hate you
I'm gonna kick your ass

I hum this to myself all the time.

This is the best part of the song.

i'm pretty fond of "there's a smell of retribution in the air"

nothing in get in the ring is as cringeworthy as "what's so civil about war, anyway?" or "human grocery store, ain't that fresh"

i generally try to avoid linking something i wrote but it seems important to drop this into the convo: http://www.splicetoday.com/music/use-your-interjection

Guccione in particular iirc - printed something in SPIN about how he was all set to go whenever/wherever Axl wanted

a dense custard of infinity (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 15 June 2012 15:31 (eleven years ago) link

what does 'human grocery store' mean, anyway? It sounds kind of macabre, but I'm not sure it was meant to be taken that way.

Poliopolice, Friday, 15 June 2012 17:21 (eleven years ago) link

in contrast to giraffe grocery stores, I assume

my girlfriend heard me listening to "One in a Million" the other day. When the lines "Immigrants and faggots / They make no sense to me / They come to our country / And think they'll do as they please"
came on, she perked up and said matter-of-factly, "Faggots come from Faggotland." LOLZORS

Sigggghhhh. The two phrases relate to the two groups separately. It's a lyrical trick. The next line makes it clearer "Like start some mini-Iran, or spread some fucking disease."

... you realize your "defense" makes no sense and that followup just makes it seem even more like Axl thinks gay people come from another country, right

Victory Chainsaw! (DJP), Friday, 15 June 2012 18:23 (eleven years ago) link

The more I reflect on these lyrics, the more I realize that the sentiments perfectly articulate many of the preoccupations of modern day tea partiers: gays corrupting the moral underpinnings of society; blacks maintaining a threatening presence just by being in the presence of whites; malevolent middle easterners deliberately destroying the nation while taking umbrage under American laws; and a general sense of fear-induced xenophobia, with the narrator's yearning to just be left alone by everyone, almost like a separatist.

do you think Axl meant police wear gold chains, too?

yes indeed. If Axl hadn't actually held a lot of the beliefs in the song I'd be more comfortable saying it's a masterpiece.

one month passes...

Can't wait to see the biopic coming out with him played by Danny deVito:

he wears gold chains with his bathrobe?

doesn't everyone?

keeping things contextual (DJP), Friday, 27 July 2012 17:33 (eleven years ago) link

i think what that really means is that he wears the gold chains all the time. i mean he can't just put them on whenever he dons the bathrobe to go out to the ice machine, can he?

j., Friday, 27 July 2012 17:35 (eleven years ago) link

maybe when he sang that he "don't wanna buy none of your gold chains today," it meant that he would come back tomorrow and buy them (and never take them off).

bajafreshnu orchestra (get bent), Friday, 27 July 2012 17:36 (eleven years ago) link

are you sure it's gold, what if it's, like, beads. of some spiritual kind.

Did you really feel "welcomed" to the jungle by axl rose, or do you think that was sort of just insincere, halfhearted graciousness?
