my girlfriend heard me listening to "One in a Million" the other day. When the lines "Immigrants and faggots / They make no sense to me / They come to our country / And think they'll do as they please"
came on, she perked up and said matter-of-factly, "Faggots come from Faggotland." LOLZORS

btw, does anyone understand how the chorus of that song is related to the verses? I don't really get it.

Poliopolice, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 17:00 (eleven years ago) link

i've never heard it -- is it worth listening to?

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 18:01 (eleven years ago) link

it's the most controversial GNR song. It's well liked as a tune, but certain sentiments are disturbing.

Poliopolice, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 18:12 (eleven years ago) link

there was a lot of controversy over that manson song they covered, but it was a pretty weak song...

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 18:28 (eleven years ago) link

All day, I've been assuming this thread got bumped for Rock of Ages.

Dude on far left of that tattoo looks more like Johnny Rzezezeinck from the Goo Goo Dolls.

the middle one looks like a cross between the Crow and Michael Jackson

"Yes, I'd like the Guns N Roses tattoo but can you include variations on Criss Angel instead of the band?"

Sigggghhhh. The two phrases relate to the two groups separately. It's a lyrical trick. The next line makes it clearer "Like start some mini-Iran, or spread some fucking disease."

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 14 June 2012 03:20 (eleven years ago) link

I feel like the Republicans should start blasting this during their rallies.

Poliopolice, Thursday, 14 June 2012 18:10 (eleven years ago) link

The next line makes it clearer

glad we cleared that up

always important to establish the logical consistency of bigoted morons

a dense custard of infinity (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 14 June 2012 18:13 (eleven years ago) link

But tying them together with the "It's all Greek to me" wordplay.

Odd Spice (Eazy), Thursday, 14 June 2012 18:14 (eleven years ago) link

But, hey, lyrics that deal with the world in a rational way are the least interesting.

Odd Spice (Eazy), Thursday, 14 June 2012 18:15 (eleven years ago) link

i never bothered with Lies so i've been hearing about that song for 20 years before finally giving it a listen on Spotify because of this thread. pretty lame, lyrics definitely not redeemed by the music remotely as much as on "Get In The Ring" or anything.

bronytheus (some dude), Thursday, 14 June 2012 18:19 (eleven years ago) link

why are you listening to Lies when you should be listening to the Bee Gees

a dense custard of infinity (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 14 June 2012 18:21 (eleven years ago) link

:(

bronytheus (some dude), Thursday, 14 June 2012 18:22 (eleven years ago) link

just from this sampling, I'd say "get in the ring" represents a maturation in lyric craft. less show-offy is better.

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 14 June 2012 18:23 (eleven years ago) link

^^^first time "What, you pissed off 'cause your dad gets more pussy than you?" has been praised for its subtlety and maturity

bronytheus (some dude), Thursday, 14 June 2012 18:25 (eleven years ago) link

from the AMG review:

"[the] emotional directness [of "Patience"] makes the misogyny of "Used to Love Her (But I Had to Kill Her)" and the pitiful slanders of "One in a Million" sound genuine. Although the cover shrugs them off as a "joke," Axl Rose's venom is frightening -- there's little doubt that he truly does believe that "faggots" come to America from another country and that "niggers" should stay out of his way."

Poliopolice, Thursday, 14 June 2012 18:33 (eleven years ago) link

"he" "truly" "does" "believe"

Odd Spice (Eazy), Thursday, 14 June 2012 18:37 (eleven years ago) link

ugh Get In The Ring is as embarrassing as One In A Million, for completely different reasons. But both underline that Axl is crazypants. the end.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 14 June 2012 19:45 (eleven years ago) link

I loooooove Get in the Ring!!!!

i like how they added like 5 new members to the band so they could get their weigh-in up for that song.

is loving Get In The Ring like loving Megashark Vs Giant Octopus? i think i could understand that :)

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 14 June 2012 23:15 (eleven years ago) link

"Get In The Ring" belatedly became one of my favorite GNR songs when i started revisiting UYI the last few years, it's so insanely catchy

bronytheus (some dude), Thursday, 14 June 2012 23:27 (eleven years ago) link

see I dig a lot of UYI, but Get In The Ring just makes me cringe now
I can't stand it

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 14 June 2012 23:31 (eleven years ago) link

yeah it grated for a long time, but now it just feels so goofily triumphant -- those huge swinging slash leads, the title chant, duff's final rant, it's glorious.

bronytheus (some dude), Thursday, 14 June 2012 23:35 (eleven years ago) link

It's just so unhinged but oddly funny in a stupidly endearing sort of way. Like, the ridiculous rhyme scheme of those first lyrics I quoted, which end in the grunt of "pain." And the way the other lyrics I quote don't even work rhythmically.

Also awesome because a couple of those dudes accepted Axl's challenge to fight and we wimped out.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 15 June 2012 11:50 (eleven years ago) link

haha really? hilarious

i'm pretty fond of "there's a smell of retribution in the air"

bronytheus (some dude), Friday, 15 June 2012 12:56 (eleven years ago) link

nothing in get in the ring is as cringeworthy as "what's so civil about war, anyway?" or "human grocery store, ain't that fresh"

Philip Nunez, Friday, 15 June 2012 14:06 (eleven years ago) link

i generally try to avoid linking something i wrote but it seems important to drop this into the convo: http://www.splicetoday.com/music/use-your-interjection

haha really? hilarious

Guccione in particular iirc - printed something in SPIN about how he was all set to go whenever/wherever Axl wanted

a dense custard of infinity (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 15 June 2012 15:31 (eleven years ago) link

what does 'human grocery store' mean, anyway? It sounds kind of macabre, but I'm not sure it was meant to be taken that way.

Poliopolice, Friday, 15 June 2012 17:21 (eleven years ago) link

in contrast to giraffe grocery stores, I assume
