my understanding was that they were, but i don't know if that was ever explicit

horseshoe, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 17:01 (eleven years ago) link

naw it was sweet

flopson, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 17:02 (eleven years ago) link

i mean, sweet for hannah haha

flopson, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 17:02 (eleven years ago) link

unethical imo

horseshoe, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 17:02 (eleven years ago) link

also totally rang true; teachers do that kind of thing all the time

horseshoe, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 17:03 (eleven years ago) link

hah, yeah

one of my favorite professors (whom i still keep in touch with) actually does that a lot

yorba linda carlisle (donna rouge), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 17:04 (eleven years ago) link

I liked the way Marnie really passive-aggressively put down the "hoarders" story and the ambiguous nature of how much she didn't like or how much she's just pissed off at Hannah.

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 17:17 (eleven years ago) link

loved his trite monologue of worthy subjects for writing, culminating in death of course.

particularly loved "what could be more trivial than intimacy?"

ryan, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 18:01 (eleven years ago) link

i feel like one some level that monologue was meant to be a bit boorish, but it also felt *right* on some level and something that Hannah/Lena has probably thought to herself many times.

ryan, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 18:02 (eleven years ago) link

the book publishing thing was def a bit of a "sex in the city" cast off but in a p. bad way.

jed_, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 18:09 (eleven years ago) link

that is really not the way i took it

xp

horseshoe, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 18:09 (eleven years ago) link

yeah it may hinge on whether you think her story about the hoarder sounded good or not. (it did not to me!)

ryan, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 18:22 (eleven years ago) link

i don't care about that story one way or the other but the view that a woman writing about her life is trivial is pretty eh to me at best.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 18:29 (eleven years ago) link

well (at least to me) i think the tension between that seeming self-involvement and stuff that "matters" (big quotation marks) is exactly what's at issue for Hannah. she's trying to find a way to write about herself and her life that doesn't veer to the opposite comical extreme: "DIED"

ryan, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 18:35 (eleven years ago) link

yeah maybe. i just see red at that not-even-that-exaggerated-for-comic-effect critique.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 18:35 (eleven years ago) link

yeah fair enough. i suppose the fact that he definitely seems a bit full of shit (and you're right, what does HE know about that stuff) tempers it. but it def got to Hannah.

ryan, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 18:37 (eleven years ago) link

yeah and then she wrote a terrible story inspired by it

horseshoe, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 18:37 (eleven years ago) link

it's not just that he might not know about that stuff, it's the ability to pretend writing about your obsessions does not equal writing about yourself if you're a man.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 18:38 (eleven years ago) link

i have a chip on my shoulder about this from grad school (lol i almost wrote "white school") because dude friends of mine were always puzzled by how frequently female academics wrote about gender and academics of color wrote about race "isn't that just writing about yourself" because when they wrote about boats or whatever it didn't count as writing about themselves because no one marked them in that way.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 18:40 (eleven years ago) link

i mean of course hannah is narcissistic, and adam was totally right to call her on it a couple of episodes ago, but i am not partic impressed by jerky dude's perspective

horseshoe, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 18:41 (eleven years ago) link

"isn't that just writing about yourself"

yeah that stuff is gross and i can see how the monologue kinda veers into that.

ryan, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 18:42 (eleven years ago) link

white school lol

the guy's dialogue about knowing all of the dick moves was so great.
we never got any resolution about shoshanna & the massage but it was nice to see her in this, i lol when she speaks

blossom smulch (schlump), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 23:36 (eleven years ago) link

yes! shoshanna made me lol the most in this ep to be honest. i love that zosia mamet, still, even though she's not getting much to do on this show. she does it perfectly.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 23:39 (eleven years ago) link

will there even be resolution about shoshanna & the internet date??

flopson, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 23:41 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i wanted to see that

yorba linda carlisle (donna rouge), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 23:46 (eleven years ago) link

barely recognised zosia mamet from mad men!

jed_, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 00:18 (eleven years ago) link

at the beginning i very vaguely recognised her but had to google her. it's p confusing, the characters could hardly be more different.

Super-gushy (in their words) Bill Simmons podcast today with LD...

Ok I'm officially enjoying the Gawker recaps more than the show. As insightful commentary on the show I'm pretty sure they're lacking, but how many recaps ever are that insightful? But just as an extended entertaining gawker running-gag/literary exercise with a set of tics and affectations, I find their consistency both comforting and hilarious.

s.clover, Thursday, 14 June 2012 02:47 (eleven years ago) link

finally saw this ep - the fight between hannah & marnie gave me so many knowing/been there lols, just the WORST kind of indirect argument where you argue about stupid surface things like they're SO meaningful but they're just placeholders for the real stuff you're mad about. and sooooooooo awesomely passive agressive.

I loved how as soon as you see the crowd she's reading to & she starts talking about the dudes internet dating username you're like, oh dude what have you done. And that beat where she's all..."...he, like...DIED...?" as though she was waiting for the audible gasp of sympathy.

So much perfect, familiar awkwardness. It's getting terrifyingly relatable too though, lol

Driver works on his roles on a couch in this apartment, and keeps to a strict regimen of exercise and eating well, which includes six eggs every morning, though he throws away four of the yolks. “It’s good for you, protein and all that,” he says. “I used to eat a whole chicken every day, for lunch. I did that for four years. But it got tiring — go to the store, buy it, eat it. It’s a mess.”

it might be in part the late hour, but this finale just destroyed me

I liked the soundtrack to during the wedding -- good calls for actual wedding reception-ish music. The ending made no sense at all to me. If you have lived in new york for even a momentary amount of time, and you are in a subway station, you know how to find out where you are. You look at the signs all over the subway station.

s.clover, Monday, 18 June 2012 04:11 (eleven years ago) link

I think that was a metaphor tbh

"Holy crap," I mutter, as he gently taps my area (silby), Monday, 18 June 2012 04:17 (eleven years ago) link

wait, so she feel asleep and when she woke up the train was stopped at a metaphor? writing!

s.clover, Monday, 18 June 2012 04:41 (eleven years ago) link

no silly it's like in lawrence of arabia when people are always like "who are you" and they mean "identify yourself" but what it really means is uh

I think it's about how he's gay I had a concept here

"Holy crap," I mutter, as he gently taps my area (silby), Monday, 18 June 2012 04:44 (eleven years ago) link

i haven't watched this episode yet but Lena Dunham said in an interview posted upthread (re. the programme "baggage") that her irl small baggage was that her sense of direction was so bad that she basically never knew where she was, often got confused and, as a result, was basically always late when meeting people which infuriated them.

jed_, Monday, 18 June 2012 11:45 (eleven years ago) link

dude who plays Adam is named Adam irl, and he IS basically his character

Except that he's an actor, and apparently good at his job?

"playing himself" doesn't pass the smell test with me talking about any actor - how would one know?

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Monday, 18 June 2012 14:07 (eleven years ago) link

yeah that's a red herring. dude has amazing screen presence.
