Do you wear white?

White vneck undershirts are my favorite thing in the world to wear. I don't know what it is, I just feel good/better in them. Not tight ones, not women's ones, not low-cut ones, just NORMAL Hanes (or whatever) ones. They wash down really well after about 6-8 years.

and they don't get pit stains after that long? i am amazed by people with body chemistry like that

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Monday, 11 June 2012 18:30 (eleven years ago) link

My dad's sure do.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Monday, 11 June 2012 18:31 (eleven years ago) link

They are comfortable though. I stole a couple years ago and wore them as sleep shirts for years. V cozy.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Monday, 11 June 2012 18:32 (eleven years ago) link

That reminds me! Apparently a nice soak in Oxyclean will get rid of white shirt pit stains. I have so many decent shirts with yellowed armpits.. what can I say, I sweat :(

Oh, they do I guess? By that time I'm just wearing them for grubby stuff so I don't care. Gym, bike rides, chores, sleep. It makes me happy to see them come up next in the t-shirt pile.

ah.
i will run with this oxyclean tip.

the white that looks best on me is bright almost-blue white, like space-suit white or something. because my skin tone is cool (aka pink). so, like, impossibly clean

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Monday, 11 June 2012 18:44 (eleven years ago) link

White is probably my best color but I never wear it bc I'm a slob :/

just1n3, Monday, 11 June 2012 18:48 (eleven years ago) link

sweat stains yellow with time, so imho it's preferable to launder them asap even if it's not in a white / bleach load

real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Monday, 11 June 2012 18:49 (eleven years ago) link

i find that if i wait until i have a full load of whites to wash, some of the shirts have been there long enough to yellow, which makes them that much harder to bleach

real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Monday, 11 June 2012 18:50 (eleven years ago) link

this is a good tip! perhaps even handwashing asap is a good idea

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Monday, 11 June 2012 18:52 (eleven years ago) link

I bleached my whites for years. Bleach turns organic stains yellow. So it's not really very good for that. Go with the OxyClean tip from upthread.

I'm never at a REAL store when I remember I need men's undershirts, I'm always at a dollar store or something, because I'm cheap, and for years I couldn't find v-necks again, ever, only the crew-necks. So I have like 10 crew-necked Ts that I realize now I hate, and only just restocked my stash of Vs. All is right with the world again.

Cut out the crew neck! I did this with every single one of my tees

Hmmmm perhaps!

Jesse used to boil his work shirts to get them white after punishing, sweaty server shifts. I have asked him to step in here and explain his technique.

Technique:

- Boil shirts

Je55e, Monday, 11 June 2012 19:09 (eleven years ago) link

I put them in OxyClean for extended periods, which helped more than anything else. Boiling was an act of desperation. It might have helped, but I don't really know for sure.

I recently bought laundry bluing and I'm hoping that helps make whites last longer for me.

rare is the time in my waking life where I am not wearing a white tshirt

he bit me (it felt like a diss) (m bison), Monday, 11 June 2012 19:11 (eleven years ago) link

I tried bluing. I think it left blue spots on things but did not actually make my whites blue-whiter. Maybe you need to pre-mix it with really hot water and then pour the mixture in with the washwater so it dilutes better? Something I do/did not have access to at random laundromat.

I went to Sears to buy Hanes undershirts, but they were out of them and I got Covington instead and those motherfuckers are terrible. They feel rough, the fabric is thin and limp, and they are wide enough for another half of a Jesse.

xp - Yeh, that's the thing about bluing - you have to dilute it and add it when the rinse cycle is full, which is a hassle because I don't hang out in my laundry room during the wash. But I've got secret planz for sneaking a mini washer and mini dryer into my apartment and I am looking forward to laundry miracles than can only be accomplished with the coveted In-Unit Laundry.

One thing I like about New Orleans is that ordinary people can get pull off wearing a white linen suit, at least on certain occasions.

Any comtemplation of white clothing seems to always devolve into discussions about laundry care, stain removal, whether it's really necessary to wash whites separately, and whether chlorine bleach or near-boiling water temperatures are desirable. I'm fine with the way white looks when it's new and clean, but keeping it looking that way is too high-maintenance for me, so I usually wear darker colors, preferably with a stain-disguising pattern or texture.

white dress shirts only but about 3x per week

the late great, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 04:35 (eleven years ago) link

I wish undergarment companies would just sell white tees that have been continually washed for 6-8 years. I have a few fruit of the loom white tees that I never wear, I just toss them in the hamper again and again, hoping that they'll break down one day enough to be soft.

White jeans

White V necks is all I wear in the summer, and to work. I own a pair of white jeans but only wear when I would go dancing at country bars. I don't really go dancing in country bars anymore.

i've noticed that a lot of women in their late-50s and 60s wear white linen pants (lined, of course)
and that most women in this town who wear white jeans pair them with heels, high ones

I'm at a show - it is hot in here and it's btwn bands - and I was just thinking how wearing white in the woods is a beautiful and ridiculous thing so I think I will dig that strapless white dress out of the giveaway bag and wear it camping or at the cottage this summer
