no bullshit all of these songs are great
― the route is ban (k3vin k.), Saturday, 9 June 2012 21:01 (eleven years ago) link
motorcycle drive-by has always been my favorite, no qualms calling it a fantastic song. i have to keep a few feet of distance from the record because the whole thing takes place in a freshman dorm lounge room and it's hard to not roll your eyes at "I LIVE MY LIFE LIKE A BURNING MAN" in that context. and i spend the entirety of london thinking THEN DON'T GO TO LONDON ASSHOLE
but they wrote some undeniable hooks jfc

I was listening to this the other day
'graduate'
― iatee, Saturday, 9 June 2012 21:11 (eleven years ago) link
yeah it's going to be hard to not vote for "motorcycle drive-by", too many emotions from 17 year old me tied up with that song. liking them is uncool for whatever reason but once 90s nostalgia really becomes more widespread, this album will be due for a re-evaluation
― the route is ban (k3vin k.), Saturday, 9 June 2012 21:13 (eleven years ago) link
the guitar tones this band works with, esp on this album, are just so damn warm, perfect for summer and driving around. there are few better road trip pop albums i know of
― the route is ban (k3vin k.), Saturday, 9 June 2012 21:16 (eleven years ago) link
yeah I have always thought there was something about the production that made these songs more interesting than the underlying material

I'm way too old for this album to resonate but "Jumper" and "How's It Gonna Be" make the most of his preening delivery.
― a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 9 June 2012 23:23 (eleven years ago) link
i know lots of people who strongly rep for the 2nd half of this album, which i've maybe heard once but should probably give more of a shot
― billstevejim, Saturday, 9 June 2012 23:34 (eleven years ago) link
I hope it's ok if I vote only really remembering the 5 radio hits.
― billstevejim, Saturday, 9 June 2012 23:35 (eleven years ago) link
I must be on the other side of the too-old divide; I love "Semi-Charmed Life," and "Graduate" was 2nd on my year-end. I'll have to re-listen to see which sounds better today.
― clemenza, Saturday, 9 June 2012 23:39 (eleven years ago) link
Forgot about "How's It Going to Be"--had that one #4 the following year. Anyway, "Graduate."
― clemenza, Saturday, 9 June 2012 23:56 (eleven years ago) link
Classic album. SCL got me into it, have a hard time feeling it nowadays tho as its stuck in adult contemp radio 4lyfe. Listening to SCL now and there's some really cool guitar harmonics/tones at 1:20. If it didn't have the doo doo dooos on it it probably wouldn't be as divisive, I still like it tho.
― Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Sunday, 10 June 2012 06:48 (eleven years ago) link
I know this album front to back. I had this badass aiwa discman that had this special feature lol where I could program 3-songs to repeat. So I had programmed I Want You, The Background and God Of Wine to repeat every night for like 6 months. Ha I wanted this one girl so bad and she wasn't having it (friendzone) and those songs hit home so hard, added to my anguish.
The pre-chorus/hook coupled with the way those guitar tones swoosh around on I Want You still resonates. The way the guitar cries out on The Background at 3:20, man. And of course the way God Of Wine builds into this beast of a tune that closes the album is all time:
I CANT KEEP IT ALL TOGETHERI KNOW I KNOW I KNOW I KNOW I KNOW I KNOW I KNOWI CANT KEEP IT ALL TOGETHER
― Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Sunday, 10 June 2012 07:19 (eleven years ago) link
Like every song on this album has a killer intro and an even better coda.
― Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Sunday, 10 June 2012 07:23 (eleven years ago) link
jumper or losing a whole year really
― fauxmarc, Sunday, 10 June 2012 07:27 (eleven years ago) link
or semi-charmed life i guess, not it's fault it's played out
― fauxmarc, Sunday, 10 June 2012 07:28 (eleven years ago) link
destroy: SCL, i want you, burning man, i was seriously just listening to this album yesterday and i don't remember what good for you or thanks a lot are
are you kidding me
― Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Sunday, 10 June 2012 08:18 (eleven years ago) link
anyway it's one of the last three. best last three tracks of any album ever.

oh, here's where i say i spent the better part of my life thinking blue was better than this record
i don't think that anymore but blue is still really, really great

― of family bonds and individual triumph. Narrated by Tim Allen, (zachlyon), Sunday, 10 June 2012 15:49 (eleven years ago) link
and burning man is the wooooorst
"burning man" is the worst track here but it's still great
the riiiiise and fall of my sloppy looove
― Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Sunday, 10 June 2012 16:44 (eleven years ago) link
also "thanks a lot" is the weirdest song on here, and most of that weirdness is in stephen jenkins' delivery, which seems to deliberately elude melody
― Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Sunday, 10 June 2012 16:49 (eleven years ago) link
the guitar tones on "thanks a lot"! they're so bright and laser-y!
― Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Sunday, 10 June 2012 16:51 (eleven years ago) link
this was the first album that i ever loved, i was like 10-12 years old and listened to it night after night, stirred feelings of adolescent longing, the sound of it probably still influences my taste now. i haven't heard it in forever and it feels incredibly odd to listen to it now, the way it so immediately recalls how i felt as a kid in that place and time gives me chills.

been listening to ursa major lately and it's a pretty good album if you ignore like most of the lyrics and "summer town."
also it's unfortunate that they dumped two of their best songs on an EP a year before it came out

Like all of my AIM-esque user names at one point in HS were some variation of God of Wine. I don't think I had drank more than a glass of wine at that point.
