the rick shapiro interview was old school WTF. some stand up i've never heard of being semi-pissed at Maron and talking about a bodybuilder mouth-raping him.

ha come on she's fucking with him

nah she genuinely doesn't understand that it's free

I love the WTF episodes with truly big-time comedians (Russell Peters, Patton Oswalt, Handler) and Maron's combination of envy and judgment. The Handler one made for such an enjoyably tense interview because it was clear that she hadn't heard the podcast and didn't know how it worked.

Odd Spice (Eazy), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 03:12 (eleven years ago) link

Did anyone here listen to that new Marc and Tom ep? I was wondering what maron said about his phone call with Jon stewart

Hauntingly Unemployed American (President Keyes), Saturday, 9 June 2012 13:38 (eleven years ago) link

Stewart basically told Maron that Maron had really been a dick to Stewart back in the day & he'd rather not go on the show. But he's welcome to grab a coffee anytime.

ie you don't get to work this out on your show. talk to me in person, like a grownup & we'll see what happens.

can't blame him. maron has that "well if I'm sorry that makes it okay" thing that only goes so far.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 9 June 2012 14:48 (eleven years ago) link

...there was also the conclusion drawn that just because you are ready to apologize doesn't mean the other person is ready to forgive. Scharpling made noises of complete understanding and didn't mention PF Tompkins by name, but it was pretty clear that he knew what Maron was talking about.

Three Word Username, Saturday, 9 June 2012 14:51 (eleven years ago) link

I'm betting that maron never bothered to meet stewart

Hauntingly Unemployed American (President Keyes), Saturday, 9 June 2012 18:02 (eleven years ago) link

Donnell Rawlings ep is great so far.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 14 June 2012 19:34 (eleven years ago) link

lol at donnell's dad's reasons for liking snoop dogg.

mizzell, Friday, 15 June 2012 15:36 (eleven years ago) link

Is saying " one" a real thing, or is donnell playing a joke on white comedy nerds?

President Keyes, Friday, 15 June 2012 18:36 (eleven years ago) link

something about this Jack White interview I really love, even though Maron is doing all the things I hate

I think I just really love hearing Jack so relaxed, laughing, just having a kind of easy conversation. It's not terribly hard hitting but I dig it

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 18 June 2012 17:02 (eleven years ago) link

didn't mention PF Tompkins by name, but it was pretty clear that he knew what Maron was talking about.

Wait, what's the story with this? I missed this whole thing.

Walter Galt, Monday, 18 June 2012 17:08 (eleven years ago) link

Loved the Donnell ep

polyphonic, Monday, 18 June 2012 17:24 (eleven years ago) link

Scharpling and Tompkins apparently had a huge falling out over a project they were working on, Tompkins did online friendship breakup (Twitter blockage, unfriending etc.), Tompkins has been unreceptive to attempts to reconcile, neither of them mention the other anymore and do not speak of the other to mutual friends (Jen Kirkman and John Hodgman being the best known). It's not something either of them talks about publicly, and Scharpling gets mad when "fans" speculate about it.

Three Word Username, Monday, 18 June 2012 17:26 (eleven years ago) link

It took him about 40 minutes before he got to "who are your guys?"

Johnny Fever, Monday, 18 June 2012 19:27 (eleven years ago) link

Really like this interview! I'm neither here nor there on Jack White-as-celebrity most days, but wtkiw him on a Monday afternoon at Third Man.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 18 June 2012 19:49 (eleven years ago) link

totally revived my Jack White crush 100% :)

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 18 June 2012 20:09 (eleven years ago) link

kinda wanted him to go supernerdy on upholstery, lol

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 18 June 2012 20:09 (eleven years ago) link

Thanks for the Scharpling/Tompkins explanation. I just Googled it and discovered - though this shouldn't be any kind of surprise, I realize - that comedy message boards are even more intense and depressing than regular messageboards.

Walter Galt, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 09:18 (eleven years ago) link

jack white has a weirdly ulrich-esque accent at times

40oz of tears (Jordan), Wednesday, 20 June 2012 17:14 (eleven years ago) link

Even though was mostly surface stuff, I enjoyed the Brian Regan interview. Seems like a naturally funny dude who really genuinely likes what he does.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 25 June 2012 18:16 (eleven years ago) link

halfway through Mark Duplass.

On the one hand I like him, he seems p cool...but there's something about him that's annoying me and I can't quite put my finger on it yet. Or I'm just in a grumpy Monday mood

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 25 June 2012 18:17 (eleven years ago) link

I gave up on Duplass halfway through. Nice guy, but seemed like he and Marc were having the most boring conversation ever between two guys who have no real interest in talking to each other.

don't really know anything about marc maron, but i heard him interviewed on NPR last friday (or maybe it was thursday, thereabouts). maybe a bad interview/day, but it was horrible. any MM fans hear it? is it a fair representation of his style?

contenderizer, Monday, 25 June 2012 18:44 (eleven years ago) link

I didn't even know he was on. Was it a Fresh Air joint?

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 25 June 2012 18:45 (eleven years ago) link

i don't think so? i'm not a regular enough NPR listener to say for sure.

contenderizer, Monday, 25 June 2012 18:48 (eleven years ago) link

was fairly brief

contenderizer, Monday, 25 June 2012 18:48 (eleven years ago) link

oh god terry gross talking to marc maron sounds like the worst thing in the world. how much amateur psychology can the fm spectrum carry?

goole, Monday, 25 June 2012 18:48 (eleven years ago) link

Feel like I should try this again someday. With 886 posts, it can't be as bad as I remember it, right?

how's life, Monday, 25 June 2012 19:03 (eleven years ago) link

enh if you thought it used to be bad, you might be right to stay away.

sorta feels like it's just going thru the motions/running on inertia for a while now

johnny crunch, Monday, 25 June 2012 19:08 (eleven years ago) link

with occasional great episodes

40oz of tears (Jordan), Monday, 25 June 2012 19:10 (eleven years ago) link

I think I'll check back over this thread and see if there are any good eps. The two or three shows I tried to get through were so depressing though.

how's life, Monday, 25 June 2012 19:14 (eleven years ago) link

the best advice is honestly to cherrypick the ones that sound good/tolerable from this 900 post thread (if they're freely available, i dont even know). & if you h8 those, it's just not ur thing

lol xp

johnny crunch, Monday, 25 June 2012 19:14 (eleven years ago) link

i really liked the chelsea handler episode cos she basically turned the tables on him. was unsurprised to see the comments on that were really negative.

goole, Monday, 25 June 2012 20:14 (eleven years ago) link

A lot of people hate Chelsea Handler, but I've got no problem with her at all. And her episode was fun because neither of them knew why the other was there.

Of the ones that are still free, my favorites are the Donnell Rawlings and the Molly Shannon episodes. Though there are a lot of good ones. Save the musician interviews for last though.

President Keyes, Monday, 25 June 2012 22:24 (eleven years ago) link

the Mark Duplass one seemed like a stop on his promotional tour for his new movie. I liked how he kept bringing it up though Maron wasn't bothering to ask about it. He was more interesting on Studio 360 a couple weeks ago.

President Keyes, Monday, 25 June 2012 22:30 (eleven years ago) link

the Jack White one is probably the best of his musician interviews, because it's the least facepalm-y

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 25 June 2012 22:32 (eleven years ago) link

Todd Hanson is the best one, hands down.

Iago Galdston, Monday, 25 June 2012 22:53 (eleven years ago) link

yes and no - it's pretty full on and shouldn't be your first Maron.

don't go in without being prepared for maaaaajor sadness. that one seriously broke me. I liked it, I got a lot out of it. but it's a LOT

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 25 June 2012 22:55 (eleven years ago) link

That one is good, but it's no longer in the last 50 on itunes, and I doubt someone on the fence about Maron wants to shell out for the app. (I suppose there's illegal ways to get it free, but I've never pirated a podcast.)

President Keyes, Monday, 25 June 2012 22:58 (eleven years ago) link

i didn't mind the duplass one, mostly because maron is a lot better at talking about film than he is about music.

40oz of tears (Jordan), Tuesday, 26 June 2012 16:57 (eleven years ago) link

I listened to the Donnell Rawlings episode and liked it pretty well. He almost derailed it for me in the beginning with all his "by the way I'm a FORMER DRUG ADDICT" stuff.
