I love this Tellier mix (thanks for the link gr8080) - but... is it wrong of me to be reminded slightly of "Dance Wiv Me"?

Tim F, Saturday, 17 January 2009 12:05 (fifteen years ago) link

My brother has been trying to get me to listen to Aeroplane for a few months and he sent me the Tellier mix. Z thought it kinda sucked to be honest, it sounds like something Reverso 68 might have done in 2003. Plus I love the original Tellier and they lose something in the streamlining of its very carefully placed rhythmic orgasms/pauses!

Local Garda, Saturday, 17 January 2009 12:27 (fifteen years ago) link

" it sounds like something Reverso 68 might have done in 2003."

Um, doesn't all Aeroplane sound like something Reverso 68 might have done in 2003? But i take your point.

I wouldn't have sent you this remix to get you into Aeroplane Ronan. I think you would like the remix of Lindstrom and Solale.

Tim F, Saturday, 17 January 2009 12:29 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah probably all of it does! Except that is odd in that you kind of think what's the point. I'll listen out for that remix.

Ronan: "Caramellas":

"Aeroplane":

Tim F, Saturday, 17 January 2009 14:06 (fifteen years ago) link

I guess where Aeroplane differ from Reverso 68 is that they're a little more e-rushy. "Whispers":

i think the tellier rmx is probably the first aeroplane thing i'm not feeling! ronan, listen to their grace jones or low motion disco remixes instead...

lex pretend, Saturday, 17 January 2009 14:09 (fifteen years ago) link

listen to that coyote ish!

s1ocki, Saturday, 17 January 2009 15:59 (fifteen years ago) link

I like the Tellier remix but I sort of hope its a one-off flirtation with italo revivalism rather than a stylistic shift.

I still haven't heard the Linstrom and Solale one.

Matt DC, Saturday, 17 January 2009 17:54 (fifteen years ago) link

Pretty much all of their recent remixes have been one-offs: The Shortwave Set remix was string-riff assisted house, Grace Jones was dark Moroder/Cowley epicry, Lindstrom/Solale is more of a Glimmers style live disco-rock affair (though much better than that makes it sound) etc. etc.

I agree that italo-reviving electro-house isn't the most exciting of shifts at this stage.

Matt download the Flying Mix!!!

Tim F, Saturday, 17 January 2009 22:47 (fifteen years ago) link

i love this tellier mix! tho for a dancefloor i think the moulinex one of that song is better. but this is a nice-tasting piece of candy.

will someone please relay to AEROPLANE my wish that they remix these selections from Eno/Cale

i listened to the tellier mix twice on an actual aeroplane and let me be the first to tell you this is the real deal folks

s1ocki, Monday, 19 January 2009 05:50 (fifteen years ago) link

tellier remix isn't their best but it's still nice. and i think an important difference they have with reverso 68 is that aeroplane are huuuge suckers for a cheesy pop hook. they use some very similar sounds but i've always thought that unabashed love of pop is what made aeroplane so fun/endearing.

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Monday, 19 January 2009 06:06 (fifteen years ago) link

Ha, you never heard the Reverso 68 Remix of Bent's "Coming Back", which I suspect is what Ronan is thinking of above.

Tim F, Monday, 19 January 2009 11:38 (fifteen years ago) link

I have the Flying Mix - I'd never seen a tracklisting though so didn't know the Lindstrom mix was on there. Will give it another listen.

Matt DC, Monday, 19 January 2009 12:18 (fifteen years ago) link

It's the one about two thirds of the way through with the scratchy guitar and awesome organ vamps.

Tim F, Monday, 19 January 2009 12:55 (fifteen years ago) link

this thread may have usurped the "New from the DFA" on the list of threads which make my day whenever I see them getting bumped to the top for activity.

that Lindstrom mix is so absurdly choice. I just wish it would fkn leak already so I don't have to be constantly scanning through the Flying Mix to play it. (cue Grady w/ a link which might get his bro at Feedelity in trouble)

also I think my dream Aeroplane mix is for them to fuck around with Animal Collective's "My Girls" - I love the original like crazy, but I bet Aeroplane could get take on that big soaring chorus. or maybe something stupid and cheesy like "Clocks" just to see how much mileage they could get out of it.

also, one of the Aeroplane dudes did a few remixes on his own as Javelo; here's one of them:

http://www.ohhcrapp.net/2008/10/spank-me-away-on-javeloplane.html

(apologies for invoking Ohhcrapp, but he's apparently the only one holding on the internet)

Yeah that's a good one, it's essentially a re-ordered version of their RA Mix with a couple of additional tracks thrown in.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 16:16 (fifteen years ago) link

and at a higher bitrate!

lex pretend, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 16:40 (fifteen years ago) link

Are there any other mixes of theirs floating round the net?

(I've got the Flying, Take Off, Airspace, RA114, Cool in the Pool and Warm Summer ones)

groovypanda, Thursday, 22 January 2009 08:52 (fifteen years ago) link

also train wreck, which i was listening to on the way to work. it's rad

t_g, Thursday, 22 January 2009 09:49 (fifteen years ago) link

oops, forgot that one. don't suppose you've got a track listing for it as its the only one i haven't got one for

groovypanda, Thursday, 22 January 2009 10:08 (fifteen years ago) link

They were great at Cargo last night - it was a bit Now That's What I Call Nu-Balearic, started with their remix of Friendly Fires and also played the Shortwave Set and Sebastien Tellier mixes.

Matt DC, Saturday, 24 January 2009 15:49 (fifteen years ago) link

How was the crowd/atmosphere? I couldn't go in the end, but went to see Runaway there last Friday, and I couldn't really get with it. People didn't seem to be that into or even there for the music, and there seemed to be broken glass underfoot everywhere (v bad for dancing; I prefer talcum powder). Maybe free nights not so good?

Jamie T Smith, Saturday, 24 January 2009 16:01 (fifteen years ago) link

Difficult to tell really because we had a massive group of us out and spent something like eight hours in there. Bit of an after-work drinks vibe maybe, people seemed to roll in early evening and then just not leave, venturing out to dance/watch bands later. We turned up more or less straight from work and had dinner and drinks in the bar bit first, mostly to avoid any queues later.

Atmosphere on the dancefloor was great though, although their music is so accessible and poppy that it couldn't really not be. That might again be skewed by the size of the group we had.

Matt DC, Saturday, 24 January 2009 16:35 (fifteen years ago) link

going out with 6-8 ppl is really the best way to do it imo

yeah last night was so totally awesome. shortwave set rmx was my favourite memory that i remember. and A+ for dragging the entire group out, seems like that hasn't happened in ages...

"memory that i remember" wtf @ my wordsmithery there. i'm still a bit fucked i think :/

I just can't hear it....it's like...why are warm up records you played before electrohouse in 2004 now a huge band?

Local Garda, Saturday, 24 January 2009 23:55 (fifteen years ago) link

I have listened to these remixes all day every day

Plaxico (I know, right?), Sunday, 25 January 2009 01:19 (fifteen years ago) link

warm up records you played before electrohouse in 2004

You say this like it's a bad thing, as opposed to, like, the best thing ever.
