the spoken/rapped? interlude in "spreading the disease" is so over the top & great

The first three albums and the s/t EP are all pretty much perfect in my opinion. And the social commentary on Mindcrime ("Spreading the Disease" a prime example) was leagues sharper than any metal band at the time.

i loved operation mindcrime when i was in maybe 5th or 6th grade? it seemed like a cool sci-fi comic book or something. i dont remember much about it. i just remember doing what they told me...told me... told me...told me...

Another rave for O:M here. Would recommend Mindcrime II to anyone who hasn't heard it. Much better than skeptical preconceptions would have suggested.

I had forgotten how awful the album cover for Empire was. W/r/t the break-up...seems oddly late in the game for dudes to hand-wringing about "musical direction". Like, yr already in Queensryche, dude that ship has sailed.

He only comes across as 81% douche, too. Who has those stats at the front of their mind, even if you did probably put them in the lawsuit?

The punch also hit my right eye which had a contact lens in it. My contact jostled and I was trying to get it back in place so I could see. I told him to get away from me, but he kept pushing his chest into me calling me 'Pussy, f**king pussy! What, are you going to cry?' My eye was watering from my contact, I couldn't see clearly, and I pushed him away. Then Scott Rockenfield (our drummer) came down and told him to get away from me. Geoff Tate then threw another punch at me, but I ducked and it hit Scott Rockenfield right in the face (his mouth area). Scott Rockenfield told him to back off and then Geoff Tate punched Scott Rockenfield again in the face. At this point our tour manager, Fozzy O'Hare, pulled Geoff Tate away and one of our guitar technicians, Kenny Bender, helped me by getting a cold water bottle on my face to stop any swelling or redness. Geoff Tate came back over and called me a 'pussy' and a 'crybaby' again. I told everyone I needed a minute until I was able to get my vision back and I was moved to the other side of the stage until the crew felt they could get the situation under control. I then told my guitar technician, Gino Bishop, to get a towel to wipe off all the spit on my guitar that kept coming from Geoff Tate.

I haven't listened to Operation Mindcrime since I had it on cassette, and I dumped off nearly all of my cassettes pre-2000. Listening to it now, expecting the worst, it's actually not as awful as I'd thought it might be. I feel less like as goofball listening to this right now than I would any Rush concept album.

I am fortunate enough to have the "Revolution Calling" boxset which has the debut EP and first six albums with a ton of bonus stuff (and a CD-ROM game I never played). I am unfortunate enough to have a commute that is usually more than an hour long each way to my job. So I broke out the box for my commute and I came to two conclusions:

1) The debut EP might be the best metal Extended Play ever released. All four songs are amazing. And they would never sound like that again.

2) Don't sleep on "Rage For Order." The heshers love the earlier stuff and "Mindcrime" was of course a game-changer but "Rage" was the transitional album between the two ideas that has some of the brawn of the earlier stuff but also saw them taping into more heady ideas (including "Gonna Get Close To You," a cover from Candaian diva Dalbello, the original of which I never heard until very recently thanks to YouTube).

Everything after "Mindcrime" is at best spotty, but through and including that, this band was a force.

Mindcrime RULES.

When I lived in Seattle, I did a lot of volunteer work for both JAMPAC (Krist Novoselic's music political action committee) and No Vote Left Behind (a Vote for John Kerry organization run by Steve Mack from That Petrol Emotion). Queensryche helped us out with a lot of fundraising stuff. Geoff Tate is an enormous asshole, the rest of the guys are very cool.

They lost the plot when Chris De Garmo quit.

i totally forgot how awesome Operation: Buttcream is.

those triumphant harmonized leads in "Revolution Calling" plus Geoff ratcheting in intensity in the pre-chorus.

even the rap bit in Spreading the Disease is dope.

but lately for me it's all about the EP. Queen of the REiiiiiccccchhhh

I really like Condition Human. it's a pretty inspired return to Queensryche form and new vocalist La Torre is a much better singer than Tate at this point.

I should listen. I was sceptical regarding Tate-less Queensryche.

And replaced him with a Crimson Glory vocalist who wrote a love song to his wife on his first album with the band
