i would err on the side of demure with wedding attire. like if you think you might be showing an uncomfortable amount of cleavage, you probably are. i think florals and solid summer colours are good choices, nothing too short, not a tube dress.

something you feel "wedding fun" in

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Monday, 28 May 2012 20:45 (eleven years ago) link

haha yes I am trying to aim for 'wedding fun'. I'm just not really a flowery bright colours sort of person so summer is a bit difficult. I'm hoping I can find a dress that'll be suitable for other weddings and fancy things that come up (could I wear the McQueen to a wedding? I seriously had a dream about that dress last night I can't stop thinking about it even when I'm asleep)

I am feeling the 'wtf all my clothes are boring' thing, too. Bought a few new things online to try to spice it up again (doubly new, in the sense that they are styles/clothes I haven't really worn much before! exciting)

ljubljana: one of the weddings is catholic and the other is a civil ceremony. I can't imagine my catholic friend will be upset by whatever I choose to wear, though (the flipside to this is her fiance and his family are very conservative Christians). I guess I'm mostly worried about not dressing up enough, or dressing up too much, or wearing something others think is too short. Ack!

salsa shark, Monday, 28 May 2012 21:22 (eleven years ago) link

If you're going to be concerned about short, don't go for that (and definitely consider the fiance's family if anything is likely to offend them). Sadly this excludes the McQueen!

ljubljana, Monday, 28 May 2012 22:26 (eleven years ago) link

btw i think a fun black or grey dress with bright/sparkly accessories is just fine for a wedding! if that's more your style. and you can wear something like that plenty of times again

"i'm having a bit of a "wtf all my clothes are boring" week... "
rrobyn: I am in that same mood!

*tera, Monday, 28 May 2012 23:20 (eleven years ago) link

i don't quite know what to do about it except: go shopping!
i'm going to go to the jeans place tmrw and get new jeans, which i really need
and pop into a few boutiquey places
i mean, my other issue is that the things i really like wearing are in the laundry, haha

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 01:19 (eleven years ago) link

but it's always good to have a new summer dress!

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 01:20 (eleven years ago) link

yes, fun black or grey would be good. I already have 'fun black' in my wardrobe so I wouldn't even have to spend much money... bonus. Thanks for the suggestions.

salsa shark, Tuesday, 29 May 2012 10:26 (eleven years ago) link

I've never had a "my clothes are all boring" moment, but I've had the opposite. "none of my clothes are normal! I need staples"

this is on its way to me! get here quick, coral dress of my dreams!

Also, pro-tip, ASOS dresses shrink a LOT in the wash. I might just have to dryclean them (Even though the label says machine washing is okay).

I like the length of that

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 23:59 (eleven years ago) link

I got a pretty bonkers vintage dress at the thrift store yesterday, A-line dress that I think was home sewn, with thin red stripes on a black background sewn on a bias so the stripes coalesce into an op-art diamond in the middle of the chest (and again in the back). It's polyester & long-sleeved so I can conceivably wear it in only two winter months, but I was still stoked.

Abbott, that sounds like my kind of dress!

We'll be selling everything from our collection with a 20% discount, but if you want to just come hang out that would be great too. We could use some help spreading the word so if you have friends that you think would like to attend please let them know, and thanks in advance for doing so!

My coral dress got here. It's made out of neoprene, and it hides nothing. I love it.

I can't to afford to buy all the eShaktis I want, it drives me nuts.. but I got this in the mail today, can't wait to get home and see how it looks!

Been meaning to order a custom dress for two months but keep forgetting to get someone to measure across my shoulder blades!

ljubljana, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 01:52 (eleven years ago) link

The dress fit like a dream; there's some ruching in the back of it to keep it tight. The only problem is the sleeves are too long! Or perhaps my waist is too high.. I had to have the same alterations done to my wedding dress :P Tiny little (broad) shoulders!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 12:50 (eleven years ago) link

I've been trying to buy some version of this for years:
http://www.asos.com/Hybrid/Hybrid-Dress-With-Button-And-Belt-Details/Prod/pgeproduct.aspx?iid=2343205&affid=1130

but I don't really like either of those colours. I got a similar ish one in white off ebay years ago and tried to dye it a cool shade of green but it just looked mouldy and faded :((

kinder, Monday, 25 June 2012 21:44 (eleven years ago) link

heh, ask and ye shall receive:

CUTE

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Thursday, 28 June 2012 18:17 (eleven years ago) link

super cute
though looking at the fabric, it might be a cat-hair magnet, which only really matters to people with cats but damn i have a couple of dresses i've just had to give up on because of this. instead of giving up on cat ownership i mean.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Thursday, 28 June 2012 19:07 (eleven years ago) link

the previous two links are the same thing but different colours!

kinder, Thursday, 28 June 2012 19:11 (eleven years ago) link

The modcloth one seems shorter?

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Thursday, 28 June 2012 19:19 (eleven years ago) link

They're all gorgeous but I think that would be a really tricky style to pull off.

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Thursday, 28 June 2012 19:19 (eleven years ago) link

Oh yeah it is shorter!
This is a similar one I even tried on & loved:

Awesome. If you liked how that looked then you'll probably like the others! I think the color on the modcloth one is nice.

wow that looks like it would be super flattering

*tera, thanks for the link - now i really want that blue & black plaid one on that site, not sure if i want it $60 bad though.

sarahell, Friday, 29 June 2012 00:42 (eleven years ago) link

the last one was a Bettie Page one but they don't seem to sell it any more :-(
I am wearing a Stop Staring one to a do tomorrow!

kinder, Friday, 29 June 2012 07:27 (eleven years ago) link

I really love StopStaring, have bought four dresses and been crazy about 3. The first one I bought was sort of wonky but they were just starting out.
I would love to buy some of these by Whirlingturban.
http://whirlingturban.com/
I bought a dress 8 years ago and was impressed with the structure and fit. Worth what I paid for it.

I want a wedding just to wear this dress and I'm not one of those,"I want a wedding just to wear this dress" kind of girl:

I got this to wear to a 20s party, but it hits mid-thigh. Not quite demure. Might have to send it back.

$30 import fee on my last shipment of eShakti - a skirt and a dress. ;_; Just when I am at my brokest.. damnit. No more online shopping for me, for a while..

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 3 July 2012 20:09 (eleven years ago) link

Gah... a dress I was in love with online went on sale recently, but my size sold out. Thought I'd try my luck with the next size up, which arrived today. The fit actually looks mostly okay, it just doesn't really feel right, I guess. There's a bit of excess fabric at the back, which I'm not really fond of (pretty sure the correct size would fit flatter against my back). Likely to be returned, with sadness.

salsa shark, Wednesday, 4 July 2012 12:31 (eleven years ago) link

All packaged up and ready for return. Better luck next time :/

salsa shark, Wednesday, 4 July 2012 12:51 (eleven years ago) link

Awww, pity. Good for you for being proactive and sending it back - I've a few items in my closet that I promise myself I am going to get tailored to fit right.. but yeah.. hasn't happened yet!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 4 July 2012 13:33 (eleven years ago) link

that is such a great dress - i feel your sadness!

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 4 July 2012 13:49 (eleven years ago) link

VP, that 20s dress is as cute as a PICTURE! I hope you don't send it back, I hope you wear it!!

how did I get here? why am I in the whiskey aisle? this is all so (Laurel), Wednesday, 4 July 2012 13:49 (eleven years ago) link

I haven't sent it back yet, due to laziness, but I will heed your advice and try it one more time. I fear the drop waist is too tight on me for the style of dress--it should be loose and billowy, I think, not body skimming. If this one doesn't work, I need to go on-line-20s-dress shopping again.

Virginia Plain, Wednesday, 4 July 2012 15:08 (eleven years ago) link

I wore my James Perse knit maxi dress yesterday. Soooo comfortable.
