I don't really like this, although Ricky Gonzalez is pretty legit:

one year passes...

So, heard this for the first time a few weeks ago, decided to look into his first two records, and uh...this dude has some pretty serious deep cuts everybody.

Sounds like the fourth Duke of September

^ That's an incredible three minutes right there, first time I heard the middle 8 in that one I just about shat myself. It's a shame I can't find any live material from his early period, wonder if he was strictly studio for awhile or what. Apparently he's pretty big in Japan.

You Belong to Me has just the right amount of funk. Probably a good comparison for the new Daft Punk sound as well.

All his vocal cadence and melody work on You Promised Me is on another level. Floating seamlessly between a falsetto and a growl and touching everything off with the perfect amount of vibrato, goddam. Love when everything kicks in about a minute in with all those instruments dropping in and out of the mix. All the little drum fills too.

I think I'm talking myself into putting Cat In The Hat on my personal classic albums list.

Posted that before I actually listened to it, and ... it's okay.

jaymc, Friday, 28 August 2015 15:48 (eight years ago) link

when Jessie Ware did that cover i was excessively worried that all the kids would assume that she wrote it.

I like Open Your Eyes much better, but it's a good tune

this song has had a bit of a renaissance in the last few years, started hearing it more often in dj mixes about 3 or 4 years ago, and there's been a few cover versions itt (that admittedly i didn't know about until now).

the bobby caldwell version is one of my favourite songs. my wife hates it tho ;_;

Ha. Actually, I assumed it was a Go West original until 10 years ago.

Didn't see this version posted yet in this thread, unless it was one of the videos removed for copyright infringement. This has always been one of my favorite renditions.

great song, although that snare reverb in the B section is so unnecessary and distracting.

wow awesome, pretty cool that this is a thing!

Spottie, Wednesday, 14 October 2015 18:12 (eight years ago) link

hmm

Kind of feel like it needs more chord changes

Also do not like the name "Cool Uncle." But not bad, and need to give it a few more listens.

old Bobby Caldwell sounds awesome

The Reverend, Thursday, 15 October 2015 03:02 (eight years ago) link

I'm pretty sure there's just a little bit of autotune on his voice and it sounds weird me.

pretty cool that this is a thing!

yeah i'm so surprised and impressed that this is a thing that it could probably sound like anything and i would love it

sheesh, Thursday, 15 October 2015 10:06 (eight years ago) link

anyway i love this, pretty much going to need the rest of this record all up in my earholes STAT, also who do i have to kill to find some live bobby caldwell from the early 80's

sheesh, Friday, 16 October 2015 08:11 (eight years ago) link

I'm already getting a Random Access Memories feeling from this -- neat juxtaposition of an older artist I like with nu-sounds, but ultimately falling a little short.

RIP :(

Bobby passed away here at home. I held him tight in my arms as he left us. I am forever heartbroken. Thanks to all of you for your many prayers over the years. He had been "FLOXED," it took his health over the last 6 years and 2 months. Rest with God, my Love. -Mary Caldwell

definitely have a soft spot for those first two albums, which i consider at least personal classics. rest in peace.

also for anyone else who didn't know what it meant, i looked into what being "floxed" is and... man, big sigh. i'm grateful he was in such a loving place when he passed.

Strangely I always thought the sample Common used on "The Light" was a Stevie Wonder song. Now I see it's Bobby Caldwell's "Open Your Eyes." This song is pretty much perfect.
