^ That's an incredible three minutes right there, first time I heard the middle 8 in that one I just about shat myself. It's a shame I can't find any live material from his early period, wonder if he was strictly studio for awhile or what. Apparently he's pretty big in Japan.

All his vocal cadence and melody work on You Promised Me is on another level. Floating seamlessly between a falsetto and a growl and touching everything off with the perfect amount of vibrato, goddam. Love when everything kicks in about a minute in with all those instruments dropping in and out of the mix. All the little drum fills too.

this song has had a bit of a renaissance in the last few years, started hearing it more often in dj mixes about 3 or 4 years ago, and there's been a few cover versions itt (that admittedly i didn't know about until now).

definitely have a soft spot for those first two albums, which i consider at least personal classics. rest in peace.

also for anyone else who didn't know what it meant, i looked into what being "floxed" is and... man, big sigh. i'm grateful he was in such a loving place when he passed.

Strangely I always thought the sample Common used on "The Light" was a Stevie Wonder song. Now I see it's Bobby Caldwell's "Open Your Eyes." This song is pretty much perfect.
