Lee971 (Lee626), Friday, 25 May 2012 23:54 (eleven years ago) link

This is just one of those songs that I cannot figure out why it's such an earworm. It's just so much more than the sum of its parts. Kind of 90s DnB drums, grinding dubstep bass, kind of Massive Attack malevolent strings but I guess it's the vocal riff that pulls it all together, like she is so insistent and compelling it earworms like crazy!

I shouldn't keep bumping this thread coz I get it in my head every time I even see the title.

Dixie Narco Martenot (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Saturday, 26 May 2012 07:01 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, it's amazing. it's easy to think that the appeal is primarily a product of the vocal, but the track is great too. thrown into relief by let me be the one, where the track is all that, but the vocal isn't quite there.

spextor vs bextor (contenderizer), Saturday, 26 May 2012 07:34 (eleven years ago) link

Listening to the a capella, and I think I've figured it out.

It's the subtle minor harmonies in the backing vocals that really highlight the bittersweet sadness of the main vocal riff.

Kinda buried in the song under all the wub and wobble, but when they're pulled out, it's like... wow. Just such proficiency and emotion. That there's this big, bouncy pop hook with all these undercurrents of sadness and yearning under it.

The LP does have its weaker moments, namely "You're Saved," a radio-friendly crossover collaboration with songstress Ruby Lee Ryder

That Royal T track is immense, been caning the album all week.

Matt DC, Sunday, 16 September 2012 19:59 (eleven years ago) link

It's especially great in the track sequence after Space Cowboy.

MikoMcha, Sunday, 16 September 2012 20:12 (eleven years ago) link

i thought the album was a bit patchy tbh - i wasn't massively enthusiastic until THIS FUCKING SONG came along in the home stretch. i mean there were some nicely aggy tracks but i kept thinking "why is none of this as good as the cheryl cole remix"

lex pretend, Monday, 17 September 2012 09:03 (eleven years ago) link

What is a "songstress"?

The Kelvin Helmholtz Instability (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Monday, 17 September 2012 09:10 (eleven years ago) link

word that student-level journalists use when they think "singer" isn't glamorous enough

lex pretend, Monday, 17 September 2012 09:17 (eleven years ago) link

Can we start calling ppl like Ed Sheerhan and Chris Martin, um, "Songsters" then? I think this is a term that is needed.

Anyway, I'll give the Royal-T album a listen if Ruby Lee is on it.

The Kelvin Helmholtz Instability (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Monday, 17 September 2012 09:23 (eleven years ago) link

the other highlights for me were "cruel to be kind", "don't call me baby" and "music please"

lex pretend, Monday, 17 September 2012 10:01 (eleven years ago) link

Inside The Ride is ace as well. Not sure so much about the section where it gets a bit heads-down, from Gully Funk through to Missing Aurora.

I'm not as crazy about the Cheryl Cole remix as others but that's largely the song's fault rather than the remixer's.

Matt DC, Monday, 17 September 2012 10:07 (eleven years ago) link

"inside the ride" was a single a few months ago and the full version of "cool down" was the AA-side and all i could think, then and now, is how pointless and boring "inside the ride" is in comparison. why is "cool down", ie royal-t's masterpiece, not on this btw?

lex pretend, Monday, 17 September 2012 10:10 (eleven years ago) link

OK, no there IS a Terror Danjah album coming out on Hyperdub.

tuomas without a nose ring (The Reverend), Monday, 17 September 2012 19:40 (eleven years ago) link

I will def check out the Royal-T album tho.

tuomas without a nose ring (The Reverend), Monday, 17 September 2012 19:40 (eleven years ago) link

There's a collabo with Champion on the TD album!

tuomas without a nose ring (The Reverend), Monday, 17 September 2012 19:53 (eleven years ago) link

The 'Dark Crawler' single with Riko is big, there will be two other versions of the riddim on the album and I'm excited.

Mercer Finn, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 07:57 (eleven years ago) link

But then again, it seems like everyone who signs to Hyperdub lately puts out dark, thoughtful nightbus albums you can't really dance to, and I don't want Terror Danjah to do one of those. :-(

The Kelvin Helmholtz Instability (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Tuesday, 18 September 2012 08:12 (eleven years ago) link

He's already released an album on Hyperdub, two years ago. It's... okay, mostly the sort of dark spiderweb grime instrumentals he usually trades in. It could probably have done with more vocalists.

Everyone seems to consciously make their sound more boring for Hyperdub but Terror Danjah is probably a better fit for them than most. They're highly unlikely to release the overdue album of R&G bangers though, admittedly.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 08:41 (eleven years ago) link

this is what this one is as well

'dark crawler' was typical hyperdub cringe. riko on the b-side however... woof

r|t|c, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 08:48 (eleven years ago) link

The more pertinent question is when there's going to be a Ruby Lee Ryder album, or at least a solo career or some sort. If Jessie Ware and Katy B deserve one the same goes here. Even Roses Gabor has a mixtape and a solo release coming out so the lack of movement around Ruby Lee is indefensible.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 08:51 (eleven years ago) link

Oh, was Undeniable on Hyperdub? Doesn't sound like it. I thought he was on Planet Mu or Rephlex or something like that, but maybe that was a previous release. I'll shut up now.

I would like if Ruby Lee Ryder put out an album that followed in the footsteps of Katy B but I really don't need any more Jessie Ware or Emile Sande polished, electronica-flavoured ~thoughtfulness~ thanks.

The Kelvin Helmholtz Instability (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Tuesday, 18 September 2012 08:59 (eleven years ago) link

roses gabor is p fun, why the 'even'

r|t|c, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 08:59 (eleven years ago) link

No she is pretty fun, but just seems lower profile than the others. I probably like 'Stupid' more than any collaborative track featuring any of the others, except the three big Ruby Lee tunes.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 09:02 (eleven years ago) link

"spend is dough" is even better than "stupid" imo

lex pretend, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 09:07 (eleven years ago) link

I didn't get into that one at all.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 09:10 (eleven years ago) link

'spanish inquisition' ft jammer is funny and v good from what i recall

r|t|c, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 09:14 (eleven years ago) link

'you're saved' is probably one of if not the most interesting central conceit i can think of in years but the whole thing is kinda halfbaked wan back of the bus singsong when it should crush ominously. bit of a shame really

i do like ryder generally but tbh there is something so crashingly boring about you lot automatically wibbling about the rarefied tremulous marmoreal diva, it is mad offputting yo

r|t|c, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 09:23 (eleven years ago) link

When Champion ft. Ruby Lee Ryder's "Sensitivity" comes out we can maybe turn this into the general Ruby Lee appreciation thread.

― Tim F, Saturday, August 27, 2011 8:30 AM (1 year ago)

AKA the point of this thread.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 09:25 (eleven years ago) link

There's also a side-order of eyerolling about the prospect of Terror Danjah releasing ANOTHER album of Hyperdub instrumentals when he could at least have the good grace to rope in a shedload of MCs like the good lord intended.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 09:29 (eleven years ago) link

there are three "interludes" of MCs over the dark crawler beat, plus two r&g-style tracks with singers (meleka and ruby lee), and then a ton of instrumentals

lex pretend, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 09:31 (eleven years ago) link

I've sort of become obsessed with the Riko version of Dark Crawler since the last revive, to the extent I don't want to even hear any of the other versions.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 22:09 (eleven years ago) link

xp i just listened to it a few more times and then wrote the review in too much of a rush to tease out its relatively minor flaws

i've never communicated with sarah souljah! what label head would possibly try to get pissy about these matters though

lex pretend, Wednesday, 7 December 2016 18:05 (seven years ago) link

I immediately thought of Full Attention when I heard that (possibly because Terror Danjah virtually recycles the beat).

The whole album is fun even though P-Money is one of those MCs who is constantly operating at full throttle without ever sounding dextrous or memorable. Rhyming 'eski' with 'Emile Heskey' OTM in that context.
