great concept, i don't like how the IAP has been integrated into it though. also doesn't seem to have the same level of "flow" as Spelltower/Puzzlejuice

Nhex, Saturday, 9 June 2012 16:14 (eleven years ago) link

Also it's really ugly.

polyphonic, Saturday, 9 June 2012 16:59 (eleven years ago) link

Pocket Planes is out, from the Tiny Tower people... I kinda hate how good they are at this kind of thing, but also am glad they haven't truly used their talents for evil yet

Pinball Arcade updated with Monster Bash and Gorgar. This game is going to be very expensive for me in the long run, I think.

polyphonic, Saturday, 16 June 2012 17:12 (eleven years ago) link

how's it compare to Zen Pinball/Pinball FX?

Nhex, Saturday, 16 June 2012 17:19 (eleven years ago) link

they painstakingly recreate real pinball tables…they have a kickstarter going to digitize the Twilight Zone table and they are going to aim for Star Trek: TNG and maybe someday Addams Family afterwards.

just played two games of song pop and i seriously feel sorry for both of the people I played because they did not really have a chance.

polyphonic, Sunday, 17 June 2012 22:46 (eleven years ago) link

what i don't get is why it shows you your opponent's choice, if you're too slow...

Nhex, Monday, 18 June 2012 00:45 (eleven years ago) link

It is a bit pointless but you can't assume they're right, I was playing with people who picked the wrong song title even after it had just been sung!

Jesu swept (ledge), Monday, 18 June 2012 08:36 (eleven years ago) link

does help with strategy if you're looking to maximize wins. if you get the first one right and they get it wrong, or take a big lead otherwise, you can just pick what they pick to secure victory.

Mordy, Monday, 18 June 2012 13:33 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, this is ridic easy
try me at forkster

Authorities don't know who shot the 50 Cent the goose. (forksclovetofu), Monday, 18 June 2012 13:53 (eleven years ago) link

it's only easy if you're playing ppl that aren't good at it

Mordy, Monday, 18 June 2012 13:54 (eleven years ago) link

nb i'm not very good. for some reason my fingers tap the wrong answer even on songs that i know very well. i've gotta tell them to slow down, but they get really excited i guess.

^for song pop

playing pocket planes, it occurs to me as bastardly as it is, i'm gonna layover people left and right for those bonus cargo rates, even in the middle of nowhere. then i think ohhh shiiiiiiiiiiiit is this what real airlines do?

Nhex, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 03:31 (eleven years ago) link

I was playing with people who picked the wrong song title even after it had just been sung!

You just did that.

JimD, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 08:47 (eleven years ago) link

I panicked.

http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2012/06/review-pocket-planes-airy-gameplay-doesnt-fly

At one point, out of curiosity, I decided to see if I could play the coin-collecting segment of Pocket Planes with my eyes closed. I figured out that by tapping randomly on the screen roughly every five or six seconds, I could collect every coin that entered the screen. I wasn’t even looking at my phone, and I was performing at the highest level that Pocket Planes allowed. What sort of game design is that?

Jesu swept (ledge), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 11:45 (eleven years ago) link

There's a new Kairosoft game out, too, and it kept me up far past my usual bedtime last night.

Millsner, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 12:05 (eleven years ago) link

if there was a chat client in song pop, i would have asked the girl who kept challenging me (and kicking my ass) in "industrial" and "latin radio" to marry me last night

some of the cue points they pick for these songs have to be a put-on: the "poisonous mushroom - DEADLY" part of ice ice baby, etc

I wonder if they're not just the samples from iTunes store?

Delbert Botts, D.D.S. (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 22:10 (eleven years ago) link

I mean if there's some API to access those

Delbert Botts, D.D.S. (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 22:10 (eleven years ago) link

That PP Wired review was way off... it's a game of constant optimization, just like Tiny Tower was. There's actually a lot more gameplay in this, deciding the cargo, routes, airport locations, etc. Harping on the mindless coin collecting in the plane watch screens is totally missing the point IMO

Nhex, Wednesday, 20 June 2012 03:57 (eleven years ago) link

The complexity of a game like PP reveals itself after a few days straight of gameplay (at least). I'm willing to bet the reviewer didn't even begin to give it enough time.

this game is not a good way to wake up
also the scoring is nutty: you're better off going slow because if you get four in a second and the other guy gets all five in five seconds, he wins.
and don't get me started about what constitutes "classic rap". Grandmaster Flash and Common are the same era now?

Authorities don't know who shot the 50 Cent the goose. (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 20 June 2012 15:47 (eleven years ago) link

Also getting 3 coins per win means you'll have to play like 85x before you unlock more packs. Unless you spend $$$

Mordy, Wednesday, 20 June 2012 18:13 (eleven years ago) link

yeah I think the full game gets you access to 10 preconstructed decks for which you can unlock 30 card sideboards in the vs. ai campaign mode, game center multiplayer, etc

"Holy crap," I mutter, as he gently taps my area (silby), Wednesday, 20 June 2012 18:14 (eleven years ago) link

I haven't played Magic since 1995 so thought I'd give this a try. Obviously none of the cards but the mana are familiar but I still one my first duel.

Pocket Planes is a lot like Tiny Tower but imo more fun, and I feel like it's an easier game to play a bit here and there. Less like work.

polyphonic, Saturday, 23 June 2012 21:11 (eleven years ago) link

In my games I tend to look for "not like work at all" tbh.

Trying out Song Pop. Played a mysterious "Joe S." and failed miserably at Modern Rap, scoring 830. Insult to injury was Joe beating me with a score of 930.

I don't know Current Hits either. Make some coin by looking up pplains.
