omg scolari peen!

We just saw a different side of Adam, I think. The one that clues us into why she likes him.

those of you pitching a bitch about how horrible and evil the mom was for wanting to not bankroll hannah's ongoing peter pan syndrome might want to take a step back

No, you're not. She's pretty awful to her parents a lot of the time in a way that makes me cringe. I mean I know that teenagers go through stuff but at 24 you would think she could stop being a complete bitch to two people who obviously love her a lot.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Tuesday, 22 May 2012 17:10 (eleven years ago) link

I think there's some kind of crossover point, or there was for me: in college etc you're just so on your own trip and why is everyone making life so difficult and ugh everything and your parents end up in the firing line of that logic and then, I dunno, somewhere in my late 20's/30's I look back and I'm just like, ugh I can't believe I did those things to my parents.

nothing quite as awful, but you know all that unthinking stuff of you say you're coming home for the weekend and then spend all your time drinking with friends when they had hoped to spend time with you etc

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 22 May 2012 17:16 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, I definitely did some of that too but I think I'd mostly outgrown that by 24. Also, she just seems to have a really shitty attitude with them like 90% of the time.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Tuesday, 22 May 2012 17:21 (eleven years ago) link

definitely. are they both her parent-parents, or is the mom her step-mother?

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 22 May 2012 17:39 (eleven years ago) link

that's totally her birthmother. the quick edit shots are meant to reflect their similar appearance.

phooey and nuts and phooey (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 22 May 2012 17:42 (eleven years ago) link

that's what I thought but I thought there was some step-parent thing somewhere. or I'm wrong.

besides it's the Freaks and Geeks mom, how could you ever be mean to her?

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 22 May 2012 17:44 (eleven years ago) link

So OTM. My dad had a big stroke when I was 22, after which point he basically couldn't talk in any detail. At 22 I was still in the above-noted mode, by the time I grew up enough to want to ask my folks lots of questions about their pasts etc, he couldn't do that. Regretz.

Hierophantiasis (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 22 May 2012 17:56 (eleven years ago) link

sorry if that's an overshare btw, it's just what vgrrl's observation made me think of...

Hierophantiasis (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 22 May 2012 17:57 (eleven years ago) link

I think the worst thing I ever did was tell my parents I wanted to have my 21st birthday at home in the big shed in the backyard. So Mum & Dad did all this work - I drove down with my friends like, 2 hours before the party, didn't do a thing to help, we kept them up most of the night with drunken shenanigans...and then we all piled in the car left the next afternoon, after lunch.

I sure as shit hope I said thank you.

Sure this has must have been mentioned already but got a huge sense of Girls as a kind of fantasy sequel to Freaks and Geeks from this week's episode: from the casting of Becky Ann Baker as the mum to the Michigan hometown and suburban hinterland to the Apatow co-write - all very different to the shameless autobiography of Tiny Furniture. Found myself thinking - well, is Hannah how Lindsay would have turned out after college?

Pleased to see that David Thomson is also a fan, though I'm not sure he needed to bring in the Kane gang: http://www.tnr.com/article/film/103526/lena-dunham-girls-hbo-tiny-furniture-youth-economy

i liked this episode a lot!! I wish it were always set in her hometown in her parent's house! I think I just don't like New York.

my wife was watching it, I haven't seen one since the 2nd ep. While I liked it a lot more than the first, I didn't feel like adding it to my must-see TV.

Jesus, I can't picture Hannah on a Dead tour.

Really uncertain about catching up on this now if it's going to make me (or going to assume that I) like Adam!

and if i were still in my 20s i would have a hard time btwn the idea of such a thing and the thing itself

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Thursday, 24 May 2012 07:38 (eleven years ago) link

everyone i don't think we can have a sensible conversation about whether or not you like adam just because he was all sweet in the last episode. a couple of weeks ago he was having weird picking-up-children-on-the-street conversations during sex & on sunday he was all OH SHUCKS NUTHIN MUCH JUST THOUGHT I'D CALL YOU. we are still pretty malleable.

he is a real good character though. just reading a book in an undecorated apartment by lamplight, or always making something with a powertool.

this last ep was great, anyhow.

blossom smulch (schlump), Thursday, 24 May 2012 10:35 (eleven years ago) link

It's not even the conversation (though it doesn't help), so much as the "This is just something I'm doing during sex, without any thought of how you might feel about it or how it might affect you (or memory of it afterwards)", like Hannah was just there to add texture to his wanking.

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 24 May 2012 11:15 (eleven years ago) link

I like Adam!

wolf kabob (ENBB), Monday, 28 May 2012 04:16 (eleven years ago) link

This was really great. Impressing more with each episode, even if it's got some rough bits. Some good lines. I liked Tako.
