Anyone liking the Bass Clef album.

Its not all dubstep, some IDMish beat fuckery here and there.

Some really solid mournful tunes though.

Any thoughts on the Skream LP? I've gotten hooked on "Midnight Request Line" and the one with the flute sample ("Rutten" I think)...

From much much further upthread:

Burial on the Breezeblock

In session, Cinematic sounds from Burial a rising producer within the dubstep scene. Burial is a 26 year old from South London. This music is so far out, cool, fresh, haunting, eerie, atmospheric - INNOVATIVE and demands a listen.

Check out 0800 if you like Midnight Request Line, its on Skreamizm 2 I think.

natedey (ndeyoung), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 15:35 (seventeen years ago) link

i still think that skip-y, click-y perlong-style percussion + dub bass + heavily overdone echo and reverb + diva/ragga samples would basically be the greatest music in the history of mankind.

acid waffle house (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 15:39 (seventeen years ago) link

which would make it grown up uk garage, i guess. but still.

acid waffle house (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 15:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah I was about to say isn't that basically Burial.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 15:42 (seventeen years ago) link

i would prefer it without the slurry of "atmosphere." (though i like the burial album a lot.) plus he doesn't really have much bass does he? and while, yeah, his grooves are a lot more intricate than most dubstep i've heard lately, they're not even as intricate as old school garage let alone something like pantytec.

acid waffle house (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 15:44 (seventeen years ago) link

It's hard to tell how much bass there is because I am usually listening to mp3s heh.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 16:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Was Skream "less celebrated" than Boxcutter on your side of the water then? I'm slightly surprised by that

Hell Hath No Furry (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 16:03 (seventeen years ago) link

But I take your point. I mean the dream is clearly the Perlon axis becoming more jungle-ized, not so much DMZ adding twiddly skips or whatever (FTR: I quite like DMZ trudging thudstep, but I think there only needs to be one ya know.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 16:04 (seventeen years ago) link

"Was Skream "less celebrated" than Boxcutter on your side of the water then? I'm slightly surprised by that."

I'll bet you neither record sold a thousand copies here in the states.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 16:04 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah but i think the boxcutter album was probably marketed better, which is all i really meant. (planet mu and all.)

acid waffle house (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 16:05 (seventeen years ago) link

If you mean if you mean critical reaction, then the answer is no: way way more Skream pieces (or dubstep pieces which mention Skream) than anything on Boxcutter.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 16:06 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah I am sure there are more review copies of Boxcutter floating around heh.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 16:06 (seventeen years ago) link

let's face it: no matter who it is, this genre gets about 1/1000th of the attention even something like klaxons will over here, which is a lot of webzine love and maybe a page, page and a half in spin.

acid waffle house (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 16:07 (seventeen years ago) link

My perspective on US critical attention is totally warped these days, because basically all I read is blogs, ILM, Flavorpill, Pitchfork and the occassional weekly (which is usually edited by someone whose blog I read or who posts to ILM haha.) I haven't picked up a domestic music mag in ages so I can't even imagine how much attention Klaxon will get and how that compares to other UK music.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 16:15 (seventeen years ago) link

i guess i'm supposed to pay attention to these things but i'd rather play literati and drink bourbon.

acid waffle house (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 16:19 (seventeen years ago) link

seems pretty big up north, all this dubstep stuff. all i've heard about from hippy/crusty/forest party types for the last, like, 3 years.

i seem to dig completely different stuff to them tho, this guy played me a bunch of tracks a while ago, and i wasn't very good at listening at the time (he was scary, had scary strong weed) he seemed to enjoy the low end if it was all over the place.... the dubstep i've liked is where its super controlled, where you can hear the actual tones in the bass, i also like the filtering/screwing to be suble rather than the sloppy listen to all this fx kind of stuff.

george bob (george bob), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 16:24 (seventeen years ago) link

and of course the klaxons are going to get more attention.

warning, bad stereotyping!

pretty boys with not much to say vs. dreadlocked stoners with a fuck-you/carefree attitude

Something wot I blogged yesterday that relates a bit to the discussion:

Listening to the excellent Ammunition And Blackdown Present: The Roots Of Dubstep I couldn't help but lament the fact that the lively and inventive rhythmic side of this music is being increasingly cast aside for the instant gratification of the huge drop and the lfo'd sub-bass. I find myself more and more drawn to dubstep which steers away from the worship of the drop and takes a holistic approach to track building: Pinch's Qawwali, Shackleton's hand-percussion meditations, Burial's other-wordly productions, Skream's electro synths, Mala's upbeat dancefloor bombs, etc. Of course the halfstep wobbler is not something to be lamented wholesale ... My hope for 2007: balance.

jimn (jimnaseum), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 16:41 (seventeen years ago) link

god are these guys actually going for the "drop" aesthetic? DID DRUM AND BASS TEACH YOU NOTHING??

acid waffle house (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 16:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Well when you listen to a song where absolutely fuck all of any interest happens, where there is no melody, no intricate drum programming etc., that's the only conclusion that can be drawn. I don't think it's the norm yet but Loefah/Coki copyists with nothing of their own to bring to the table seem to be a bit of a trend.

jimn (jimnaseum), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 16:48 (seventeen years ago) link

Boring wobblestep--- might be a bit better if they used more than about 3 notes, started deploying sabbath style riffs, but even most of the riffs are shit in that particular style. I was at he last DMZ and the quantity of that stuff with incredibly unintricate half step 70bpm drums actually bored me so much I was falling asleep on the dance floor, before deciding to leave (relatively) early.

and yeah, i've been trying to fit some of my krumping routines to a dubstep soundtrack and i gotta say i concur

wait... where's the misplaced modifier??

also, shackleton, shackleton, shackleton!

shudder redduhs (shudder), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 22:18 (seventeen years ago) link

well, technically there isn't a misplaced modifier - you can tell from the verb tense what the subject is ... but the line still scans funny

"i doubt i'll have speakers big enough or smoke enough weed"

reads too close to

"i doubt i'll have speakers that are big enough or smoke enough weed"

which would be a badly misplaced modifier

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 22:39 (seventeen years ago) link

"seriously though i played some dubstep for my students (who are all huge e40 / wolfpack / hoodstarz / snap fans) and they were all "this doesn't bump enough" or "this is too slow""

I was listening to the instrumental for "Girlfight" and thought pretty the same thing about dubstep. I mean why would a crunk/snap fan even bother.

siah thx for the mix on the dj thread ... i've been listening to it daily!!

but what did you mean to draw my attention to w/ that one??

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 4 February 2007 01:44 (seventeen years ago) link

I just wanted you to hear the juxtaposition of some electro and dubstep, its the direction I'm hoping to take my stuff.

I thought you'd appreciate it.

Its very satisfying to know that you like it.

Siah Alan (Siah Alan), Sunday, 4 February 2007 02:14 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah i started listening to it right after i started listening to alex smoke's "sci fi hi fi" mix for soma ... i caught a similar vibe off it, looking at detroit-style techno in a new context (here dubstep instead of minimal) ... again, nice work!!!

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 4 February 2007 02:22 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, basically I'm hearing the same stuff when I listen to D1 as I do when I hear Aux 88 or Drexciya. Or Arpanet for that matter.

I'd like it to be genuinely techno inspired, as opposed to what drum and bass people think of when they say techy.

Back in the day Benga and Skream got called Croydon techno by grime Djs, thats how I first heard of them.
