also tbh i think brits kinda aren't that great at this type of stuff in general with addison, pearson, girl unit, and jam city as the rule-proving exceptions. USA 4 lyfe

The Reverend, Sunday, 20 May 2012 07:18 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, there does seem to be some level of them just not getting it, not that I'm any more "down" with the kids because I saw a footwork crew do their thing to a Linkin Park song once.

Josiah Alan, Sunday, 20 May 2012 07:22 (eleven years ago) link

Hey Europe!

Start collecting Dance Mania records and get back to us in a few years.

Josiah Alan, Sunday, 20 May 2012 07:24 (eleven years ago) link

I'm not even sure it's fair to impugn the continentals. They seem innocent enough. And are easier to ignore.

The Reverend, Sunday, 20 May 2012 07:27 (eleven years ago) link

I'm a way bigger Hotflush fan than a Night Slugs one, although I guess they're on more of a softcore rave thing.

Josiah Alan, Sunday, 20 May 2012 07:32 (eleven years ago) link

and going in the other direction, Fade To Mind has obsoleted NS to an extent for me

The Reverend, Sunday, 20 May 2012 07:40 (eleven years ago) link

Wait, I'm confused - I thought Addison Groove was a jam band? "Hooptie Ride Marauders" and all that?

Machinedrum disapproves of this conversation.

does he really look like that? gross.

The Reverend, Sunday, 20 May 2012 08:11 (eleven years ago) link

His look is a little public access television, makes me wonder about some of his other aesthetic decisions.

Josiah Alan, Sunday, 20 May 2012 08:23 (eleven years ago) link

Like "hey guys, let's mix jungle and footwork!", yeah. Not my thing.

Josiah Alan, Sunday, 20 May 2012 08:33 (eleven years ago) link

philip d kick does it convincingly

the late great, Sunday, 20 May 2012 08:39 (eleven years ago) link

Well the tash wins in the cornball stakes obv.

Both their latest albums are kinda arse tho. Distal's was just a bit boring, rigid and grey. Addison Grooves sounded liek a remix of an old Diplo album... if he ever made one I dunno. They've both done some good singles though, Addison esspecialy.

jimitheexploder, Sunday, 20 May 2012 08:43 (eleven years ago) link

i don't think i've ever heard an addison groove track i enjoy, and i've never heard a distal track at all

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Sunday, 20 May 2012 08:44 (eleven years ago) link

it's funny when i see the juke thread pop up with me as starter b/c i don't think i've enjoyed any juke music that's been released since, especially not any britishers-doing-juke

That's Slava, just for reference.

Josiah Alan, Sunday, 20 May 2012 08:47 (eleven years ago) link

I like Addison Groove, but I saw him play live a month ago and it was just bland. Haven't listened to the album, mostly cause the set was so bland. Machinedrum I will rep for certainly. Distal, I dunno. Boss of the south is fun for like 2 minutes then gets boring.

EDB, Sunday, 20 May 2012 08:51 (eleven years ago) link

This might be the best Distal track...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOpB258PwhI

or

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjT5tIwjFrk

All his stuff kinda gets annoying or boring if you don't mix out of it fast though.

Pretty much like all the AG singles to some extent. Dumbshit, Sexual prob stand the test of time the best.

Not feeling Machinedrum at all really.

jimitheexploder, Sunday, 20 May 2012 08:54 (eleven years ago) link

Salva does not equal Slava, they do both make bass music though.

Very confusing. Note to self.

Josiah Alan, Sunday, 20 May 2012 09:49 (eleven years ago) link

salva was kind of zzzz when i saw him

The Reverend, Sunday, 20 May 2012 09:53 (eleven years ago) link

i think the crowd was kind of wack that night tho

The Reverend, Sunday, 20 May 2012 09:54 (eleven years ago) link

It sounds like he's trying to figure out if he wants to be a house producer or not.

Ugh that picture of distal... Anyways, if we're talking corny, then I say that French Fries - "Yo Vogue", as representative of the dirtybird take on footwork via uk bass, is surely the corniest of the corny.

EDB, Sunday, 20 May 2012 12:50 (eleven years ago) link

I love the distal album. Never really crossed my mind to wonder where he was from

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Sunday, 20 May 2012 16:14 (eleven years ago) link

The Reverend, Sunday, 20 May 2012 20:39 (eleven years ago) link

lol I know Distal irl but only learned this week that he was a "serious" musician this week when a friend posted the pfk review on fb, wtf @ me right?

Euler, Sunday, 20 May 2012 20:44 (eleven years ago) link

i like french fries! i like both addison groove and distal, i just feel like they look silly. if i could sum it up, i might say distal : ed banger :: addison groove : bathing ape. or i might say distal : ninja tune :: addison groove : mo'wax. i am predisposed to like addison groove because when i was young i lusted after freestyle bikes and those shoes. addison groove looks like he wants an ice cream, distal looks like he wants breast milk.

i also like their european take on juke and footwork music. people accuse it of being empty and thin but its just effectively spaced out. like the music of these cerebral and malnourished young creepers

i particularly like what distal's doing with ghettotech, there was a moment when dj assault almost turned into ltj bukem and some stuff i can't find youtubes of like "boca ratawn" reminds me of that

That's good too but not as good by a mile.

I think I just have a bias against post-flying lotus phased synth chords at this point. They make everything sound more ~studied~ than they would otherwise.

Tim F, Sunday, 20 May 2012 22:56 (eleven years ago) link

Are people saying Distal's stuff is a 'european take on juke' or am I just to tired? He's from Atlanta right?
