sudekis was emo not mad. that was pretty over the top for being all about wiig though.

The Hulu edit of this episode will be pretty tiny, given how much too-expensive-to-license music was used in the skits.

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Sunday, 20 May 2012 05:41 (eleven years ago) link

Are formal send offs a regular thing for the bigger names? The last one I remember happening was Phil Hartman's.

Though, tbf, when we look back on the show in time, she'll be regarded on Hartman's level easily.

"Liza Minelli Tries to Turn Off a Lamp".

This was all-time.

poxen, Sunday, 20 May 2012 05:45 (eleven years ago) link

anytime I'm with friends and we're running late, "Liza...we're gonna be late for the SHOW" comes up

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Sunday, 20 May 2012 05:47 (eleven years ago) link

xp iirc, some of the celebrities he did impressions of showed up for Will Ferrell's last show: Neil Diamond, Alex Trebek, Robert Goulet, possibly others.

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Sunday, 20 May 2012 05:48 (eleven years ago) link

Just realized that, if all of the rumors are true (including Abby Elliott's potential departure), Bobby Moynihan and Nasim Pedrad would be the fifth and sixth most senior cast members (or you can bump 'em each up a notch if you're only counting people who regularly appear in sketches). That doesn't seem right, somehow. In a "holy fuck, does time ever fly" kinda way.

Quiet Desperation, LLC (Deric W. Haircare), Sunday, 20 May 2012 05:51 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, it's somewhat understandable that people like Hartman, Ferrell, and Wiig would get bigger send-offs, but it's kind of a slap in the face when other people's departures don't even get acknowledged onscreen.

Quiet Desperation, LLC (Deric W. Haircare), Sunday, 20 May 2012 05:53 (eleven years ago) link

Also, I think Chris Kattan may have put in more appearances this season than Abby Elliott did.

Quiet Desperation, LLC (Deric W. Haircare), Sunday, 20 May 2012 05:54 (eleven years ago) link

Naw, Abby Elliott was in the show plenty this season (and I've come around to where I actually like her now...used to wonder why she was even there).

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 20 May 2012 05:56 (eleven years ago) link

I think Armisen is, at this point, gunning for longest tenure ever.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 20 May 2012 05:57 (eleven years ago) link

He'll have to stick around half as long again to beat Hammond. No one is ever going to beat Hammond. This is a good thing.

Good to see Paula Poundstone sitting in on accordion with Mick Jagger and the Arcade Fire.

Nice try. Paula Poundstone has never worn a dress in her life.

#verizondoesSNL because they're going to end unlimited data plans soon, duh

curmudgeon, Sunday, 20 May 2012 16:53 (eleven years ago) link

My prediction, which apparently did not bear out, was that Keef would make an appearance, thus making a public proclamation of reconciliation which would precede a Stones reunion/tour.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 20 May 2012 20:05 (eleven years ago) link

Keef "probably" watched Mick on SNL.

Christgau:

I thought Jagger was just great on SNL last night. He was in almost every skit, and always good. The one [commenter] cited was the deepest, but my favorite was the gay Charles Bronson early on. All his music was fine, too, although I much preferred Arcade Fire to the Foo Fighters as a backing band (and have never liked Jeff Beck more in my life, though the song was a mite off-the-cuff). Jagger is so at home on a stage it's mind-boggling. But I gotta say, the finale in which the SNL gang took farewell dances with Kristen Wiig trumped it all. She was so much the best thing on that not-bad-at-all show that I find it hard to imagine it being that good again for years. She made me laugh every time she came onscreen all year.

That Catchphrase bit wasn't actually on last night's show, was it? If so, I missed it. Those things keep being funny.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 20 May 2012 21:02 (eleven years ago) link

and have never liked Jeff Beck more in my life

Beck was great last night, but man, wait until Christgau hears the Yardbirds...

catchphrase was dumped after dress rehearsal.

Sudeikis looked so pressed.

I just rewatched the end of the episode and I could swear that Sudeikis leaves the stage altogether at some point.

I stumbled over the last song last night after watching a movie. There was some problem with the sound on the local station carrying it, so I tried for ten minutes to find a clip online today (both Hula and NBC are blocked in Canada). Finally found one on someone's Tumbler--bet it's down now--and downloaded it. Thought it was just great.

"But, dad...where's my hug?"

I don't know how you could get through six years on that show without coming to terms with the fact that Lorne plays favorites and is super manipulative.

(My "favorite" anecdote (which someone may have noted in this thread, but almost 4000 msgs. so fukkit) is from when Bill Hader was on WTF and talked about the time he was about to go onstage and do his Vincent Price bit for the first time when Lorne called him over and asked, in reference to the sketch, "But...why now?". Hader says you can totally see how shaken he was if you watch the sketch. And, I mean, understandably.)

Quiet Desperation, LLC (Deric W. Haircare), Monday, 21 May 2012 01:40 (eleven years ago) link

Lorne being known as a colossal dick probably doesn't make it any easier to swallow when he literally ignores you on live national television,

No, I'd imagine not. I just can't imagine it was at all surprising.

exactly

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 21 May 2012 03:33 (eleven years ago) link

yes that is exactly the way we all want to think of Lorne Michaels

I DIED, Monday, 21 May 2012 03:37 (eleven years ago) link

I mean, how many times in recent years has Lorne made some comment about Kristen Wiig being the most talented cast member in years? As a current cast member, your options are pretty much to just accept that Lorne will be Lorne or let that shit eat you up inside and write a book about how everyone on the show was a dick and Adam McKay got your Godzilla sketch cut and, man, fuck that place, who needs it.

I mean, poor Sudekis and all, but you can't overlook that iirc, the only two cast members to leave SNL as famous as Kristin Wiig is leaving were like Chevy Chase and Eddie Murphy

Like I thought it was dumb at first too, but Carvey and Hartman and Ferrell and Fallon weren't starring in $250M-grossing films when they left

Mike Myers could've gotten that kind of sendoff, but I think a quiet exit is what he wanted.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 27 May 2012 07:11 (eleven years ago) link

i thought sudekis was still undecided about coming back next season, probably because he'd be doing romney at least up until the election or even after who knows.

slugbuggy, Sunday, 27 May 2012 08:55 (eleven years ago) link

I don't think anything's set in stone beyond Wiig taking a powder.

Mike Myers made the mistake of sticking around for that '94-'95 season (which was the impetus for the 'Is SNL Dead?' roasting the show got in the press as well as in the halls of NBC, depending on who you believe) after most of his contempraries had already left and then quietly splitting midseason. Lorne had much bigger fish to fry at that time than giving superstar castmembers a proper sendoff.

i misremembered Old School as being before Ferrell left but nah it was after. i wonder how 'famous' Wiig really is, though, Bridesmaids was much of an ensemble thing than Wayne's World or any Eddie Murphy movie.

--niccimanewhore (some dude), Sunday, 27 May 2012 12:52 (eleven years ago) link

Jimmy Fallon's big sendoff sketch doing a Grease parody w/ Tina Fey was actually pretty funny (and lol that Fallon is one of the few people to have gotten that kind of sketch), so i was mildly disappointed that there was only the vaguest hint of comedy in the Wiig graduation thing
