have been really into the last few alchemical tumblr posts, Z S. also, I showed your tumblr to my (artist/professor) wife and she said she would have hired you for an animation professor job search she was on this year

thanks rob! and that's really too kind of your wife. i can imagine the disappointed look of the students as in walks the professor, looking like a 14-year-old, muttering "i only really know how to use photoshop, and i don't even understand how half of these buttons work...let's get drunk!"

Laurie Anderson shows up the crappy refresh rate of my monitor.
John Foxx needs to use that GIF as the front page of his website.

thanks!

the laurie anderson one was my first foray into the exciting but somewhat baffling world of "data bending". as always, i'm years behind the times, but i was reading a newer kenneth goldsmith book (Uncreative Writing) and he briefly talked about how you can open images in a text editor, they show up as piles and piles of gibberish looking code, and then you can make some random adjustments to that series of characters, resave the text file as a jpg (or bmp or whatever), and it results in an altered image. the offset laurie andersons in the animation above were made like that.

i'm not sure if that's how all glitch-style animations are made - maybe it is. but it's a cool new area to work with. and plus, i want to experiment more with mixing in glitchy/random alterations with more static overlays.

What did you think of the Kenneth Goldsmith book ZS?

the so-called socialista (dowd), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 20:39 (eleven years ago) link

i liked it a lot! although, to be honest, even though it was already pretty thin, the whole thing probably could have been boiled down to a single, kickass 20 page essay on appropriation.

and i'll once again display my terrible naiveté, but for me it was valuable reading just because it had never really occurred to me that some people would connect things like manipulating found images into looping gifs to a much long line of artistic traditions (duchamp, warhol, sampling in music, etc). but even though i appreciate goldsmith's perspective, i'm coming from a totally different angle. goldsmith will openly proclaim that he doesn't care if anyone actually reads his "uncreative writing". so in his books where he chronicled every single thing he said for a week, or laboriously copied out every single word from an edition of the NYT, he doesn't expect anyone to actually peruse the resulting work and get any satisfaction out of it, but rather for people to just consider the underlying concept of the piece and argue about THAT. which is awesome. but coming from my tiny gif part of the world (and def not comparing myself to goldsmith in any way), it's the exact opposite - i just want things i make to be visually interesting. sometimes there's a rough "concept" behind a gif before i start work on it (e.g., use four shifting colors in the foreground, and the same shifting four colors in the background so that occasionally the bg and foreground are indistinguishable for a frame), and since reading his book i definitely think about that kind of stuff a lot more than i did before, but it's still kind of a tertiary thought.

anyway, way tmi about all that, but i'd recommend checking it out, or at least the two chapters that are posted for free online (the introduction and Why Appropration?).

Thanks WEBSITE!! (Z S), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 21:11 (eleven years ago) link

I read it a couple of weeks ago, and I really enjoyed it - I was just interested in how you found it from a visual arts point of view (my interest was in concrete poetry (and it's descendents) and someone mentioned that he discussed it in the book).

I agree about the 'kickass 20 page essay point'. Still, given something to think about - he's very good at conveying the sheer possibilities we have in a world of text, and how little we've actually explored these ideas.

the so-called socialista (dowd), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 22:23 (eleven years ago) link

Also reminded me of the frustrations that led me away from experimental poetry/text - the resistance of our mainstream culture to any influence from poetry. The idea of a poetic Warhol, as he discusses, is such an appealing one, but I just don't see it happening. So the avant-garde ends up talking to itself endlessly and fruitlessly (same in other art forms too, obv, that lack the immediacy of the visual, or the musical). But then I get easily frustrated.
