been looking for an above-the-knee prairie dress that doesn't look like a costume, this fits the bill imo

Yes to owning heels, no to wearing them under circumstances that require me to walk more than half a block/stand more than 20 minutes.

i cannot find a picture of the black dress with beige polka dots i bought the other day, but it is a thing i have wanted for about 6 months now.

So jealous, kate!

I was also a little jealous of the girls who worked by me, but now they don't have jobs so now I just feel bad. They were nice.

tokyo rosemary, Saturday, 19 May 2012 02:57 (eleven years ago) link

I tried on some dresses at Betsey that fit really well on the hips but were way too tight in the chest.

tokyo rosemary, Saturday, 19 May 2012 02:58 (eleven years ago) link

The Dakota dress is my favorite dress style of all time (shirtdress with tie waist and full skirt); trying to decide how I feel about the "shirt tail" hemline.

I have a shirt dress and a shift dress that I want multiple copies of in different colors. The shift dress was made for me by my mom, because no shift off the rack would or could ever come close to fitting me; she said she might have saved the pattern and will try to dig it up to make more. the shirt dress I am thinking I might take to a seamstress to try to copy without deconstructing the dress itself. I could live happily in multiple copies of both of those dresses for a long, long time.

Know what you mean. I have five dresses I wish I had replacements for when they die. Going to suck.

I have found that ross & tj maxx are great places for cheap impulse summer dress buys that don't make you feel guilty. I rarely find any clothes there, but always see cute dresses. Ymmv by location.

I picked this up at H&M, it is marked down to $20 this weekend (from $50) and also comes in a great orange.

Ladies! I have a couple of weddings to attend in August and I'm clueless about summer wedding attire. One ceremony is in a church, the other in a hotel, and I think the receptions are both at community halls (I don't think either will be hugely posh or fancy). Anyone done this before who can offer some basic suggestions? What should I absolutely NOT wear in terms of colours and styles?

I've spent tons of time looking at dresses online but none of my favourites seem particularly 'summery' or 'weddingy' :(

salsa shark, Monday, 28 May 2012 19:45 (eleven years ago) link

If you feel dressed-up, and attractive, and you're not dying of heat, I think that's great, whatever you end up wearing. Who wants everyone to look the same in their wedding pictures?

ljubljana, Monday, 28 May 2012 19:46 (eleven years ago) link

More in the spirit of the thread, I'm pretty much in love with this right now, but it's an Alexander McQueen so kind of beyond what I can afford :/

salsa shark, Monday, 28 May 2012 19:47 (eleven years ago) link

xpost that's what a friend of mine said too! maybe i'm overthinking?

salsa shark, Monday, 28 May 2012 19:47 (eleven years ago) link

Well that's completely natural. Are the people very very traditional, would be offended by someone wearing black, etc.? If not, anything that says 'it's summer' and 'I have dressed up to celebrate your day and I feel gorgeous' has got to be good.

ljubljana, Monday, 28 May 2012 19:49 (eleven years ago) link

that alexander mcqueen dress is rad. would wear/covet.

i just tried on like 10 dresses in a boutique near my house and they were all cute and fit fairly well but just weren't what i'm looking for :/ i really liked one dress in particular but it only came in navy and white. and navy only looks good on me if it's a black-navy not a blue-navy (if that makes sense) and this one was the latter. and white, well, that just seems dangerous in my world of biking around and eating things and sitting down in various places. so that was a bit sad.

i'm having a bit of a "wtf all my clothes are boring" week... which is making me be creative, but still, all i really want is 2 new dresses!

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Monday, 28 May 2012 20:39 (eleven years ago) link

which reminds me, don't wear a white dress to the weddings

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Monday, 28 May 2012 20:40 (eleven years ago) link

i would err on the side of demure with wedding attire. like if you think you might be showing an uncomfortable amount of cleavage, you probably are. i think florals and solid summer colours are good choices, nothing too short, not a tube dress.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Monday, 28 May 2012 20:44 (eleven years ago) link

something you feel "wedding fun" in

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Monday, 28 May 2012 20:45 (eleven years ago) link

haha yes I am trying to aim for 'wedding fun'. I'm just not really a flowery bright colours sort of person so summer is a bit difficult. I'm hoping I can find a dress that'll be suitable for other weddings and fancy things that come up (could I wear the McQueen to a wedding? I seriously had a dream about that dress last night I can't stop thinking about it even when I'm asleep)

I am feeling the 'wtf all my clothes are boring' thing, too. Bought a few new things online to try to spice it up again (doubly new, in the sense that they are styles/clothes I haven't really worn much before! exciting)

ljubljana: one of the weddings is catholic and the other is a civil ceremony. I can't imagine my catholic friend will be upset by whatever I choose to wear, though (the flipside to this is her fiance and his family are very conservative Christians). I guess I'm mostly worried about not dressing up enough, or dressing up too much, or wearing something others think is too short. Ack!

salsa shark, Monday, 28 May 2012 21:22 (eleven years ago) link

If you're going to be concerned about short, don't go for that (and definitely consider the fiance's family if anything is likely to offend them). Sadly this excludes the McQueen!

ljubljana, Monday, 28 May 2012 22:26 (eleven years ago) link

btw i think a fun black or grey dress with bright/sparkly accessories is just fine for a wedding! if that's more your style. and you can wear something like that plenty of times again

rrobyn: I am in that same mood!

*tera, Monday, 28 May 2012 23:20 (eleven years ago) link

i don't quite know what to do about it except: go shopping!
i'm going to go to the jeans place tmrw and get new jeans, which i really need
and pop into a few boutiquey places
i mean, my other issue is that the things i really like wearing are in the laundry, haha

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 01:19 (eleven years ago) link

but it's always good to have a new summer dress!

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 01:20 (eleven years ago) link

yes, fun black or grey would be good. I already have 'fun black' in my wardrobe so I wouldn't even have to spend much money... bonus. Thanks for the suggestions.

salsa shark, Tuesday, 29 May 2012 10:26 (eleven years ago) link

I've never had a "my clothes are all boring" moment, but I've had the opposite. "none of my clothes are normal! I need staples"

Also, pro-tip, ASOS dresses shrink a LOT in the wash. I might just have to dryclean them (Even though the label says machine washing is okay).

I like the length of that

I got a pretty bonkers vintage dress at the thrift store yesterday, A-line dress that I think was home sewn, with thin red stripes on a black background sewn on a bias so the stripes coalesce into an op-art diamond in the middle of the chest (and again in the back). It's polyester & long-sleeved so I can conceivably wear it in only two winter months, but I was still stoked.

Hey if any of you living in the NYC area would like to get free food and drinks (no admission fee either by the way), I'd be honored if you could join me at an event we're hosting at a venue overlooking MSG. We'll be selling everything from our collection with a 20% discount, but if you want to just come hang out that would be great too. We could use some help spreading the word so if you have friends that you think would like to attend please let them know, and thanks in advance for doing so!

Here is the website (again):

Here are the details of the event:

June 5th (this Tuesday) 3:30pm - 8:00pm

My coral dress got here. It's made out of neoprene, and it hides nothing. I love it.

Been meaning to order a custom dress for two months but keep forgetting to get someone to measure across my shoulder blades!

ljubljana, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 01:52 (eleven years ago) link

The dress fit like a dream; there's some ruching in the back of it to keep it tight. The only problem is the sleeves are too long! Or perhaps my waist is too high.. I had to have the same alterations done to my wedding dress :P Tiny little (broad) shoulders!
