In Harvey's version, his voice un-emotes a bored asexuality that feels entirely out of place amidst the dramatic arrangement. Elson and Cat Power's version is more stipped down, but the singing is far more alluring.

No, only these two, from a sampler.

one month passes...
To be completely honest, Stipe's "L'Hotel" is fantastic. It's the best thing with his voice on it since "The Great Beyond."

I thought it was pretty great; loved the Franz Ferdinand & Jane Birkin song.

Why's Carla Bruni singing in english? High concept be damned.

Hold up, A NEW TRACK FROM PORTISHEAD?! Did hell freeze over or something? I'm surprised no-one's made a bigger deal over this.

If someone could do the honours with a YSI, I'd be grateful. Even if it turns out to be an unreleased outtake from 1998 or something.

I don't know how to YSI it, but I'm sure I could probably email it to you if it's a bgi deal. It's only 3.4 megabytes.

Thanks, but I think a YSI would be easier. Just go to YouSendIt.com, choose the mp3 in the "Select File To Send" box and click "Send It". Then all you have to do is wait for it to upload(it takes a couple of minutes), and it'll give you a download link when it's finished. It's that simple. You don't even have to put in any email addresses.

Does that work?

Harrison Barr (Petar), Sunday, 9 April 2006 18:42 (eighteen years ago) link

It does, thank-you!

Well, it definitely sounds like Portishead, albeit a stripped-down version. No samples or programmed beats apparent. Beth Gibbons sounds a bit throaty, assuming that is her and not a stunt-Beth. Considering it's been almost nine years since the last record, I wonder who's in the band these days?

I'm nowhere near my computer now, but I'll try to share "L'Hotel" (sorry, French speakers, for not bothering to find the shortcut to the proper "o" character) when I can. Seriously: the drum machine, the dub bass, the dissonant string crescendo -- if it weren't old Stipey but, I dunno, Milosh or Tiga, half of ILM would be doing backflips right now.

Never mind, I found this: http://www.myspace.com/PORTISHEADALBUM3
It seems they've taken the Broadcast route and got rid of the drummer.

Ah. It's a pretty cool cover though, I think.
