possibly the remastering made this couplet too obvious so it was excised from the reissue.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 19:07 (nineteen years ago) link

True. As I recall, that was the first song to really knock my socks off on that album. It's so...relaxing.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 19:08 (nineteen years ago) link

I'll say start with Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy for no other reason than that's the one I like best.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 2 June 2004 19:17 (nineteen years ago) link

Does anyone agree it is the most full of musical surprises? (Probably not.)

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 2 June 2004 19:18 (nineteen years ago) link

It's probably my favorite too. HCTWJ has the best standout songs, I think, but TTMBS is the best as a whole album.

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 19:19 (nineteen years ago) link

much as "math" tries to convince us is FALSE,

1>2>3>4

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 19:27 (nineteen years ago) link

before and after science has "julie with" and "by this river" though, which are better than any other songs on any other eno albums!

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 20:47 (nineteen years ago) link

I like the "pretty" half of BAAS, but the "rock" half really grates.

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 20:50 (nineteen years ago) link

BAAS has "becalmed", one of my favorite eno instrumentals.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 20:52 (nineteen years ago) link

So BAAS wins despite having some admittedly dumb songs (king's lead hat, in particular)

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 21:13 (nineteen years ago) link

i saw these at tower today. they look nice, but are pricey.

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 21:25 (nineteen years ago) link

but taking tiger mountain has "the true wheel" (my favorite eno vocal)

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 21:36 (nineteen years ago) link

it also has "put a straw under baby" which is dumb. really only warm jets and green world get by without songs I have to skip (and, I don't like I'll come running all that much either).

If I say I like Nerve Net will everyone hate me?

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 21:45 (nineteen years ago) link

If they fucked '..merges with the night' that would be a shame 'cause its the best song on that record (yeah i know always a hard choice).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 21:47 (nineteen years ago) link

If you already have the Eno CDs, but want the reissues, I'd actually pick these up in reverse chronological order (excepting the possibly fucked up Another Green World), as the remasters make the most difference on the later albums. Before And After Science sounds quite improved with the reissue, whereas Here Come The Warm Jets sounds slightly better.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 22:11 (nineteen years ago) link

have a look here for more info and plenty of overwrought Paul Morley commentary:

http://www.astralwerks.com/eno/reissue.html

rh, Thursday, 3 June 2004 01:40 (nineteen years ago) link

"Becalmed" was on Another Green World. Nerve Net is not uninteresting. And I love overwrought Paul Morley commentary.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 3 June 2004 01:44 (nineteen years ago) link

whoops! sorry about that. it's not even my favorite eno instrumental now that i think of it.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 3 June 2004 02:10 (nineteen years ago) link

Before And After Science for beginners, AGW for the initiated.

"Becalmed" is my favorite on AGW.

"Kings Lead Hat" is not dumb. It is a perfect pop song.

But like kjoerup I'm tired of reissues. I'd much rather spend my time learning about and chasing down things that are new to me. And one wonders...will these things just get released again in 10 or 20 years when technology is even better? And will we still buy them?

Bimble (bimble), Thursday, 3 June 2004 03:05 (nineteen years ago) link

rosalie, i've been waiting all evening
possibly inside your nose

Yeah. Like, that's what he's really singing...

Errrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, it's Eno, that might well be what he's singing

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 3 June 2004 08:56 (nineteen years ago) link

As I said somewhere else on ILx, I'm not sure that Warm Jets benefits from being "cleaned up"; I prefer it all fuzzy and indistinct.

I'm not tired of reissues. If it's a choice between Here Come The Warm Jets (in whatever sonic state) and the Junior Boys, then I'm happy to be content with "old" things.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 3 June 2004 09:35 (nineteen years ago) link

"All of them are old, none of them are new
Some of them will turn up when you least expect them to"

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 3 June 2004 09:36 (nineteen years ago) link

I've never listened much to Eno, but really like Here come the warm jets as a single (only heard it on some DJ mix thing). Am I going to be disappointed if I buy this remastered album then?

chris (chris), Thursday, 3 June 2004 09:55 (nineteen years ago) link

I have the previous CD issues, and sonically they don't seem too bad to me. How much better are the new versions? Have they been sonic-maximised?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 3 June 2004 10:01 (nineteen years ago) link

Morley marvellously on these: http://www.astralwerks.com/eno/albums.html

Sorry if you've already seen this.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 3 June 2004 10:09 (nineteen years ago) link

a master at work and at play.

petridish reviewing the four eno reissues:
"Throughout pop history bands and artists have insisted on making arty records with no tunes, as opposed to what people want to hear... (introduction drones on for another 500 words, namechecking Kid A, Faust Tapes and Metal Machine Music) ...and there are pop stars who can't play any instruments (crawls on for another 500 words, namechecking Sid Vicious, Bez and Lena Zavaroni before saying that Eno's solo albums aren't worth bothering with because all classical music sounds the same)"

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 3 June 2004 10:26 (nineteen years ago) link

Surely you jest or surely he jests?

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 3 June 2004 10:27 (nineteen years ago) link

...finishing by saying that Bryan Ferry will always be better than Eno because Eno could never write a decent tune like Let's Stick Together or marry Jerry Hall.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 3 June 2004 10:45 (nineteen years ago) link

Eno had Julie Christie who would want a horse-faced Texan after that?

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 3 June 2004 10:46 (nineteen years ago) link

whereupon petridish would say that julie christie only ever turns up in arty-farty films rather than films people actually want to watch, e.g. martine mccutcheon.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 3 June 2004 10:50 (nineteen years ago) link

Ha ha. Bloody "Billy Liar", elitist rubbish!

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 3 June 2004 10:52 (nineteen years ago) link

Quite, Dadaismus. ;)

Unbelievable comments from this Petridis... it's not music writing, I'm afraid, of any kind I would acknowledge.

One would have thought that these Eno albums would have been good enough on t' tune front - it's great, displaced pop music - for such Luddites, yet clearly he's not listened to them at all. Or is playing up to some sort of image; sounds a rehash of his PJ Harvey 'thoughts'.

Tom May (Tom May), Thursday, 3 June 2004 12:24 (nineteen years ago) link

sorry tom, it was just me guessing at what petridish would write.

in reality he'd probably give the grauniad review to someone like adam sweeting to write 100 words of nothing about.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 3 June 2004 13:43 (nineteen years ago) link

Oooooooooh you little liar!

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 3 June 2004 13:45 (nineteen years ago) link

One does sense that he might file these records away as 'difficult' though... Anyone attacking Faust, Captain Beefheart, Sun Ra et al clearly wants his sounds straightforward, which all these Enos certainly aren't. He's hardly going to take to the use of the Portsmouth Sinfonia, eh...?
What sort of music does this writer actually like...? Sounds Hornbyite. I admit I have not read a great number of his reviews, but then I've never really taken the Guardian as too good on music. I suppose they have had Morley writing on occasion, and a few of those pieces were as amusing as he is wont to be.

Sounds a real waste if they've messed up the remaster of AGW, as it's just about my favourite 'pop-period Eno', mood-wise at least.

Tom May (Tom May), Thursday, 3 June 2004 17:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Amen.

Shit, I just bought "More Music From Films" the other day--should I open it?

John 2, Sunday, 3 April 2005 16:21 (nineteen years ago) link

if you wish to play it in your CD player, then yes.

latebloomer: AKA Sir Teddy Ruxpin, Former Scientologist (latebloomer), Sunday, 3 April 2005 20:31 (nineteen years ago) link

Bits sound as if they are excerpts from the 2-track group jams that Eno put together for 'Another Green World'; but these are the sections he never finished or overdubbed further -- so it's a CD of the tape fading up for 45-60 seconds worth, then down again. Definitely does not flow like an album.

Some 'ANG' tracks appear in slightly different versions. Some of the tracks are barely distinguishable 'alternate' mixes of pieces from 'Music For Films' volume I, the last few tracks are rough versions of the drones from 'Apollo'. Incredibly annoying liner notes, 43 minutes long.

milton parker (Jon L), Monday, 4 April 2005 06:19 (nineteen years ago) link

Ah, sorry. I was refering to the batch that we messed up--similar to 'green world'---as heard here in the top review:

How significant is the increase in sound quality on these reissues? Now that these new versions are out, loads of the original issues are being traded in and can be found cheap and readily.

$15 new version or $10 used old version?

Or are there some albums that are worth getting the reissues of, and some that are not? Hopefully someone with a keen ear can lend some advice.

JBC (flamingrev), Thursday, 19 May 2005 16:47 (eighteen years ago) link

Some stores have been selling the reissues new for $10.. so I've just been diving in on those deals, and selling the old ones back (although at this point, there's no more old Eno CDs for me to sell back.. although I have to check to see if my AGW CD has that fuckup on "Everything Merges With The Night")

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 19 May 2005 16:52 (eighteen years ago) link

As far as sound quality goes, I think the new ones certainly sound better.. the greatest sound quality improvement has been on Before And After Science, if I had to choose one. But I think Music For Films sounds significantly better too..

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 19 May 2005 16:54 (eighteen years ago) link

Also, on Here Come The Warm Jets, the original CD issue had some fuckups on "Blank Frank". It sounds like the master tapes were catching on something earlier in the song for brief moments, which added a neat effect, but was distracting. I believe they are gone now on the reissues.

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 19 May 2005 16:55 (eighteen years ago) link

Wait, you're telling me that "Blank Frank" momentary slow-down thing isn't intentional? The music stays in time and on beat! That's my favorite part of the song! It sounds like it's playing on a record and someone spun it back a measure. Say it ain't so!

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 19 May 2005 17:35 (eighteen years ago) link

I'd have to listen again.. there are two specific moments.. there's one at the beginning, and one later that happens on the sound of a tom drum. The latter is the one that sounds coolest.

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 19 May 2005 17:42 (eighteen years ago) link

he's not talking about the part of the song where everything slows down (xpost)

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 19 May 2005 17:43 (eighteen years ago) link

I think Eno would appreciate this debate.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 19 May 2005 17:46 (eighteen years ago) link

It doesn't really slow down, I didn't really explain it right. I'm talking about the part at beginning of the song, in the first line "Blank Frank is the messenger of your doom and your destruction." While the word "destruction" is being stretched out, there's a part where it "hiccups" (for lack of a better word) but stays on beat, like a record or reel-to-reel tape being spun back really fast, and it's awesome. So that was an accident?

2017 half-speed LPs? Are they a bunch of hooey or what?

bodacious ignoramus, Wednesday, 13 June 2018 13:27 (five years ago) link

have not heard them, but...

CONSUMER ALERT!!

Apparently the reissue of Another Green World is messed up. The "Rosalie" line is mysteriously edited out of "Everything Merges With The Night" acc. to some who bought the reissue. I'm not sure this is the case with ALL of them... and I sadly missed this the first time around to listening to the reissues.. and I don't have time to check for myself.

So, um, those of you who HAVE the reissue of AGW, check it and note it, if that's the case. Surely, they are working on rectifying this, one would hope.

― donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, June 2, 2004 7:55 AM (fourteen years ago)

what the fuck, now I gotta check for this stupid mistake

sleeve, Wednesday, 13 June 2018 14:01 (five years ago) link

They fixed the AGW mistake after the first pressing of the remaster.

I haven't heard the half-speed reissues, but reports vary pretty widely on the Hoffman forums: a lot of people like them, but some have noted dropouts and other defects that didn't used to be there, while faulty copies aren't uncommon (as with seemingly most vinyl releases in recent years).

eatandoph (Neue Jesse Schule), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 14:22 (five years ago) link

Has this half speed stuff not been debunked?

Duke, Thursday, 14 June 2018 20:59 (five years ago) link

this is one of my favorite steve hoffman forum posts ever: "Half-speed mastering is a two-edged sword. One one edge, for a response of 20-20,000, the cutterhead only has to go up to 10,000, so if there are any nonlinearities in the upper range, they will be greatly reduced. Plus, if you were going to, say, 30,000 Hz (and you can, with both analog masters and vinyl) you'll have that much more "breathing room" up there.

On the other edge of the sword, and this is a pretty sharp edge, you have to apply only half the RIAA curve when cutting the lacquer, and that's not always easy to do. Plus, now your response for 20-20K has to go down to 10 Hz. And to make things even more fun, the response of playback heads is slightly different at 15 IPS than at 30 IPS. That's why, generally, you'll find 15 IPS machines set to NAB, and 30 IPS machines running IEC.

Half-speed, when done well, is very good. It's just not easy, and my kudos to those that can pull it off."

what????

akm, Thursday, 14 June 2018 21:31 (five years ago) link

wow, good find, that's fascinating to me (I also had no idea what NAB/IEC meant, looked it up and they are EQ standards)

I already have these albums on OG vinyl and the remastered CDs, so I have no stake in this but I'd be wary if I was in the market

sleeve, Thursday, 14 June 2018 21:36 (five years ago) link

wary of the half speed versions, I mean

ten months pass...

Apparently "Apollo" is being reissued in an expanded edition, with a second disc of music. What's unclear to me is if the second disc is unreleased old material or new music inspired by revisiting the soundtrack.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 8 May 2019 11:56 (four years ago) link

Cool, love Deep Blue Day.

Stevolende, Wednesday, 8 May 2019 12:17 (four years ago) link

the second disc is a newly recorded album, according to Eno's facebook post (which makes it sound like the Eno brothers had been estranged, lol):

Apollo – Atmospheres & Soundtracks – Extended Edition’ out July 19th. Eno reunites with brother, Roger and Daniel Lanois on 11 new tracks accompanying the seminal remastered album. On 2LP gatefold vinyl, limited numbered 2CD with hardcover book, + standard 2CD. Enoshop and uDiscover each have 250 copies of a free limited ‘Apollo’ A2 print for vinyl and limited CD versions.

it was previously remastered in 2005, so I'm not sure why his site claims it's being "remastered for the first time". the new material should be interesting though

lispectah deck (unregistered), Wednesday, 8 May 2019 14:16 (four years ago) link

blah, I just recently hunted down a nice copy of this on vinyl to replace my shitty one. guess I'm buying this again this summer.

akm, Wednesday, 8 May 2019 22:02 (four years ago) link

Awesome, really looking forward to this. I have a copy of Apollo but it’s a little beat up and skips sometimes. Plus I think Eno is currently making the beat music he’s made since...Apollo

^best^ music, I meant. So I’m looking forward to the new tracks!

Roger’s second record, Between Tides, is exceptional. Apollo is maybe a bit overrated but I’m looming forward to this.
