Agnostic Front live at CBGB .....STIGMA!!

Ringo again, before the solo in 'If You've Got Troubles', desperately trying to salvage something from the mediocre take:

"Ah, rock on...ANYBODY!"

harveyw (harveyw), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 09:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

Van Halen, "Could This Be Magic?" ("Ah, EDWARD!")
Not a shout out per se, but in Saxon's "Denim & Leather" he says "Maybe you can learn to play the bass!" followed by, duh, one-bar BASS SOLO

"Show 'em, Stevie!" Mudhoney, "Overblown"

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 12:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

In Robyn Hitchcock & the Egyptians' "Tell Me About Your Drugs": "Tell me, Morris!" (This is exceptionally hilarious because Morris Windsor 1. is normally the drummer and playing guitar for this one song only, 2. is pretty much straightedge, apparently, and 3. keeps on playing exactly the same thing he had been playing, only without the bass).

On the bonus edition of "Forever Changes" you get to hear Arthur Lee give Johnny Echols a load of shit..."Echols man, I don't understand your trip man..."

Spinal Tap in "Gimmie Some Money": "Go Nigel Go!"

The Jazz Butcher in "The Devil Is My Friend": just a simple "Guitar!" call

five months pass...
"C'mon girlfriend, shook me!" Celine Dion to Anastacia in the middle of their cover of "You Shook Me All Night Long". Or maybe it was to the guitar player, I think she was a Meredith Brooks type.

Arthur (Arthur), Saturday, 2 August 2003 14:33 (twenty years ago) link

I always smile when Angelo says "play it Goldfinger" to Kendall on "Party At Ground Zero".

Bryan (Bryan), Sunday, 3 August 2003 05:52 (twenty years ago) link

She's calling for a harmonica solo instead of guitar. But--

Chrissy Hynde on "Middle Of The Road": "brrrrrrrrRRREOWWRR!!!!"

Andrew Beaujon to Rob Christiansen in Eggs' "The Government Administrator": "Okay, Rob, play GUITAR now brother..."

"Rock 'em back, Sonic!" in "American Ruse" by MC5.

...and of course, "Brother Wayne Kramer...Brother Wayne Kramer..." in the 5's "Rama Lama Fa Fa Fa"

We shouldn't be limiting this to shout-outs for guitarists. One that always sends chills down my spine is Big Joe Turner's "Blow, Joe!" before the saxophone solo in "Shake, Rattle and Roll."

Jazzbo, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 19:08 (sixteen years ago) link

surely, "move over, rover, and let jimi take over" is the genuinely greatest such shout of all time. (assuming we're allowing for shouts where the vocalist and guitarist are the same person.)

What Mekons song is it, off the ROIR Live: New York record, where Jon Langford says "Mr. Robin Trower, ladies and gentlemen," and there proceeds the most haltingly half-assed slide guitar solo ever heard?

I crack up every time at that.

Jon Lewis, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 19:27 (sixteen years ago) link

If we're including non-guitarists, gotta include Iggy shouting "Blow, Steve! Bloowwwwwwww!" to saxophonist Steve McKay in the Stooges' "LA Blues." And of course every single James Brown shout-out ever.

Sara Sara Sara, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 19:35 (sixteen years ago) link

and every bob wills shout-out ever

"MISTER Zoot Horn Rollo: Hit that long lunar note and let it float."

I can't believe I was the one who got to mention this one. Zoot said in his book that it was one of his proudest moments.

"Come on, now. Rock and rollllll!!" (Dr. Hook - "Cover of the Rolling Stone")

"Guitar!!" (The Darkness - "I Believe in a Thing Called Love")

Not on record, unfortunately, but I once saw David Thomas point to a guitarist before a solo and say: "Make me regret every decision I've ever made!"

Thank you for the opening; Mr Thelonious Monk to Mr John Coletrane, who alledgedly nodded off during the session, "COLETRANE! COLETRANE!", at which point you can hear him whirl back into conciousness as he tarts his solo.

"Tell me how you want it,
That's how I'll have our guitar player,
Roger Steen play it, listen to him!! [sitar fill]"

The Tubes, "Up from the Deep"

Ray Davies is saying 'Oh Get Em Off' in that one apparantly.
So i'm told.

During "Super Bad" James Brown would frequently shout "Coltrane!" at his saxophonist to egg him on.

Julian Cope on "No why no where no way no when"

"Do it, Donn-eye!"

However on the first line of the next verse he sings:

"Man that was shitty crap, go back and try it a-gain....."

I think my favorite of these is still Shanice's "Blow, Branford, blow!" during "I Love Your Smile". There's something really awkward about the way she says it, like half playful and half sexual. It's... weird.

No mention of the fantastically simple call for "Guitar!" by Rod Stewart on "Stay With Me"? Love that.

Gram Parsons gives the love to James Burton on the "Medley Live from Northern Quebec" from Grievous Angel. Also love it when he introduces "Hickory Wind" saying "Here's an ol' song from a long time back."

Not on record but a live memory - Glastonbury 1979, an 'all star' jam with Alex Harvey and Steve Hillage and I forget who else; they're doing Small Axe -the Marley song - and after the second chorus El Vambo goes 'Take it away Steve' - minutes turn into apparent hours........ eventually Alex, thinkly Glaswegian ' Bring it back Steve'

Gram Parsons's shoutout to James Burton in 'Cash on the Barrelhead' is a classic of this genre. it's funny how on one level he's introducing James to his (patently fake) live audience, but on another level he's bragging to his actual audience about how lucky he was to have gotten the great James Burton to play on his record.

I'm not sure if I'll ever figure out exactly what he's saying, though. "James Burton and his hot ẗ̸̰͉̹́̿'̵̱̣̅͠ç̵̿ͅḫ̵̭̯̈̆'̵̦̀͐j̶̖̾̓'̵̢͛̚͝r̵̨̉̂ả̸͈͙̕i̵̡͔̓̕ṇ̴̟̽g̸̭̩̟͑l̴̙̅i̶̫̱͒͊n̵̘̜̈̈́g̴̨͇̼̏̌̐ guitar"???

Latinamerican people surely recall this one:

“Echale vampiro”

The opening shoutout on Mana’s “Me Vale” which is one of their biggest stadium anthems.

Not a song I love but It’s the most popular shoutout I can think of.

As Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash stumble through their Nashville session (Bootleg Series v. 15), Cash repeatedly shouts out Carl Perkins, not so much to incite Carl, it would seem, as to make sure listeners know who's playing guitar
