if any of you are in Brooklyn I'll be playing a live set at this party on Friday night. The space is a bar/restaurant that's slowly becoming popular with local dj's etc. Can't vouch for the sound system but I'll do my best to mash up the dance: http://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?370104

I always feel trepidation about posting about my music project. I suck at self-promotion. But I've been uploaded a song a week so far in 2012 - up to 22 now - on Bandcamp (and now Aurovine as well). It's gotten a handful of downloads, but nothing near the attention some of my earlier releases received so I suspect I've already moved into "I liked the earlier stuff better" territory where I say that XXX is the best album I've made in years.

Anyway, this new wave/post-punk/krautrock/electropop/etc conglomerate can be found here:

Feedback welcome.

recorded on my phone, my new year's resolution was to learn folk/fingerstyle guitar and it's going ok, this is my first attempt at writing a lil something, in open C which a homie put me up on as the key to the whole fahey school of playing (NOT to compare myself with the man hahaha)....anyway at the beginning i'm trying to remember how it's supposed to go and i suck basically but my little girl is squealing and laughing and making faces at me and i think makes it actually a pretty nice little thing, but that's on her not my terrible chops...though i play it right a few times

haha oh no without that i wouldn't have uploaded it :)

like i'm in that "know just enough to be dangerous" phase of learning fingerstyle guitar, about 1:30 i hit a couple repetitions of it that are decent

this sounds kinda awful, but i've only been really pursuing it since the new year, and then i couldn't even do some of the basic chords and stuff, let alone fingerpicking...also my guitar kinda sucks...excuses excuses

I threw together this dubby house number the other day via Audacity: http://soundcloud.com/edb-i/do-puff-drive-mercedes

If someone can honestly tell me whether or not this is simply trite paint by numbers dubby deep house I would really appreciate it. I suspect it is, I just would like another opinion.

formerly EDB (ed.b), Friday, 17 August 2012 20:15 (eleven years ago) link

i like it

but you could fit what i know about "dubby deep house" in a thimble

it reminded me of burial just cuz of the vocal chop up thing, but that's probably just because burial is the only thing remotely like this that i've listened to a lot.

not sure if that's helpful but i enjoyed it.

Lovin EDB's track.

Here's an acoustic demo for a song I'm going to go in and record with my band. I was really trying to work out how to do vocal harmonies and what would work:

and here's an early demo of said song

I guess I should give some comment on the track I just posted earlier. First fruits of my collab w/ my sometime dj partner. He's kind of an old dnb head/dubstep goon, so we're coming from a bit different directions, but we're both very happy with this track.

The Reverend, Monday, 20 August 2012 22:29 (eleven years ago) link

Giving Rev's track a spin... Very very cool. Love this colourful ice creamy sound.

been good about practicing my folk guitar, been fucking with open tunings, never really used them before....this one is the something i wrote last night while watching the Pentagram documentary on Netflix....kinda falls apart right at the end but i kinda happy with it.

UMS - I'm at work now, but as a fellow amateur fingerpicker I'm interested in this.

PS, did anyone listen to my song? I hate to ask, but I'd like to get some feedback before laying down money to go into a studio and getting it recorded properly. It really is just a demo, but the structure and lyrics are pretty much there.

Here's that tenner I owe you, asshole (dog latin), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 15:54 (eleven years ago) link

oh yeah i forgot to post....i liked it, and i think it would benefit from more instrumentation and production....but the vocal stuff is interesting not many ppl try to do stuff like that anymore

Jandek at the Disco (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 16:35 (eleven years ago) link

Hey cheers UMS. It's interesting you say that because I was going for an almost self-consciously retro approach to songwriting. I wanted to do a song about mods and rockers, but have it apply to pretty much any area of teen culture and the difficulty of trying to fit in and wanting to find ones place in a scene and all that kind of thing. But on the whole it kind of just evolved and I didn't necessarily TRY to make it sound old-fashioned, so what you say there is p interesting to me, because I've no idea exactly what it is I was doing that not many people don't do any more... Don't know if that makes sense.

Street Dentist - yeah great name and a great beat. Love the orchestra samples and the 808 work. What software you using at the moment? I like the idea of producing "rhythms" or even "riddims". I'd like to release a whole album simply made up of beats for people to MC over - something along the lines of http://www.souljazzrecords.co.uk/releases/?id=23718

Now for Anabelle... I don't often fuck with different tunings myself and I'd really like to try and learn more about it. But this is really sweet and it sounds like you've got it nailed (particularly the tricky chord switch halfway through the bar). Sounds like you're using an acoustic with metal strings. I found moving to nylons opened up a huge new world for me, but like running with sandbags I can no longer play my old acoustic without a pick unless I want to have very sore fingers.

Great work all round mate.
