also i hope you realize '[having a negative opinion of kreayshawn] is nagl' is basically the language of the worst kind of comments box stan who is always SO EMBARRASSED FOR YOU that you're not backing the winning team and are about to be proven SO WRONG

some dude, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 15:32 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i dunno, you guys seem to beef so easily! especially for 2 ppl that have, in the larger scheme of things, such similar tastes!

Bandersnatch Cumberbund (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 15:34 (eleven years ago) link

deej, like lex, often defends his taste so badly it almost makes me wish i didn't like so many of the same things

some dude, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 15:36 (eleven years ago) link

"beef so easily" sounds like off-brand hamburger helper

the late great, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 16:44 (eleven years ago) link

i totally share your basic philosophy here, to be clear, i'm just going hard on you because, y'know, that's what they call me, ol' "ship1ey gohard."

i think you are kind of throwing things on different sides of the fence whenever it suits you, though. one day kitty pryde is owl city and we should just let her be popular without talking about her, the next she's just a niche internerd thing. one day kitty pryde's problem is she appeals to people who don't really like rap, the next day kreayshawn's virtue is that she appeals to people who like pop.

― some dude, Wednesday, May 16, 2012 6:35 AM (5 hours ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

well, isnt fundamentally this whats weird about the press around it is that its like jumping on an owl city for being excellent when in pt of fact owl city is lame & critically ignored, which i am fine with, but in this case theres this veneer of confusing respectability

kreayshawn's virtue is that she appeals to people who like pop & people who like rap, shes a pop-rap artist, kitty pryde is neither of those things

man down (D-40), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 16:47 (eleven years ago) link

(but even if kitty pryde were popular, which is still possible, its not worth discussing anyway)

nb all i'm asking for is critical discourse that ignores her, i recognize this isn't actually a tenable position when there ppl out there writing about her that inexplicably like her for some reason

man down (D-40), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 16:48 (eleven years ago) link

nothing about this is like owl city in any way, let's drop that analogy

abcfsk, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 16:49 (eleven years ago) link

who are these rap heads that are into kreayshawn, besides you and j0rdan

some dude, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 16:50 (eleven years ago) link

nothing like posting over and over again on an artist's thread to make sure that the critical discourse ignores them

Mordy, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 17:05 (eleven years ago) link

lol seriously

some dude, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 17:06 (eleven years ago) link

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 17:13 (eleven years ago) link

the kreayshawn bit on the 2 Chains song is really awful.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 17:14 (eleven years ago) link

has she dropped any guest verse that wasn't?

some dude, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 17:16 (eleven years ago) link

that was the first one I'd heard.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 17:18 (eleven years ago) link

yeah same here, i'm just wondering if she's even had any other chances to shit the bed for 16 bars yet

some dude, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 17:22 (eleven years ago) link

well, lil wayne liked it enough to do his own version of it

it got radio play nationally

man down (D-40), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 19:19 (eleven years ago) link

on rap radio, i mean

man down (D-40), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 19:20 (eleven years ago) link

"Right after I landed in LAX, I ran into my ex and he looked a little vexed. I said 'Is there a problem?' 'Yes. California hates you bitch why would you bother?' I just came for the fries with the carne asada, and to prove I can go a lot harder than Gucci Gucci Louis Louis Fendi Fendi Prada."

That Kreayshawn shout-out is telling, because Kitty Pryde is basically the much sharper, self-aware, suburban high school version of Kreayshawn.

“I don't think I'm following in her footsteps or anything, but the same kind of thing is happening, like 'Oh she's cute, this makes me laugh. It's not good, but it's funny.' You send the link to your friends, and then it's a big joke. Which is good, that's what I wanted. But I want people to laugh with me, not laugh at me.”

r|t|c, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 20:52 (eleven years ago) link

its easier to be self aware about something that has already happened

man down (D-40), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 21:04 (eleven years ago) link

i think the point is that KP is more self-aware in general, not just aware of kreayshawn. i think i agree, in that KP seems to be framing herself in her narratives, looking at the persona she creates from the outside and laughing at it. there's a self-mocking tone to the whole thing.

'self awareness' is exactly whats gross about this, tho, its based on weird insecurity of dealing w/ rap as a white girl rather than just ~being herself~ & competing on a level playing field w/ others

man down (D-40), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 21:17 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, because rap critics are all about judging white teenage girl rappers by the same objective criteria they'd judge teenaged black male rappers. It's her insecurity that's creating the context here. OK.

誤訳侮辱, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 21:20 (eleven years ago) link

i hate on black male rappers all the time too! what are you even talking about?

man down (D-40), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 21:27 (eleven years ago) link

that sounds bad out of context probably. i hate on rappers of ~any color~ all the time. white rappers have to deal w the added fact of being outsiders to a culture, certainly, but there are ways to do that that arent gross

man down (D-40), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 21:27 (eleven years ago) link

i like kreay's lack of self consciousness about it, like, she just wanted to compete w/ other rappers period rather than emphasizing her difference so that ppl can say stuff like, oh shes part of 'internet tumblr culture' so why would she be compared to rapper?

man down (D-40), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 21:29 (eleven years ago) link

rapperS

man down (D-40), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 21:29 (eleven years ago) link

that's all well and good, but self-consciousness is a legit and honest-seeming part of the persona that KP is projecting. a lot of teenagers do feel self-conscious abt their place in the world, and the fact that she works from within that gives her voice a lot of its authenticity. she's not putting on a rapper style. she's just being herself, insecurities and all.

i don't care if a girl rapper is black, green, purple, blue, white or orange

the late great, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 21:35 (eleven years ago) link

as long as she brings a new perspective to rap music and is ironically self-aware of her persona i will go to bat for her on ilx

& this is why putting 'teenagers' on a weird pedestal is weird, b/c they often have dumb, even if honest, ideas about life

man down (D-40), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 21:36 (eleven years ago) link

fair enough. i'm not obsessed with teen-ness, but i do have a fondness for the in-situ bildungsroman that the late great was snarking at upthread.

and pop is heavily paved with dumb ideas about life, honest or not

so is the road to hell

the late great, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 21:50 (eleven years ago) link

!!!

so good art only expresses noble/intelligent/productive ideas now, it can't reflect other things?

Chris S, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 21:56 (eleven years ago) link

exactly, i like the first couple beastie boys albums largely because they're so full of dumb ideas

'self awareness' is exactly whats gross about this, tho, its based on weird insecurity of dealing w/ rap as a white girl rather than just ~being herself~ & competing on a level playing field w/ others

a suburban-seeming middle class white girl being insecure about an identity as rapper -- wow, that is just so weird!
