No More Sorry is the track that first drew me in to this band, I can't think of anything anyone has done like it.

That song is not a million miles away from some AR Kane stuff e.g. WOGS, but they don't quite have the same multi-tracked fast strumming thing going on:

AR Kane also had a thing for young women with knives too.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 12:15 (eleven years ago) link

The closest I've ever been able to describe the tone of the instruments in No More Sorry is of an orchestra tuning up in a cathedral with roadworks going on outside. I think the whole mood is just so bleak, dark, unsettling, menacing and odd.

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 13:13 (eleven years ago) link

It's all about the absence of body, isn't? Just the returns of the FX, not the source.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 14:25 (eleven years ago) link

but yeah being able to non challopsingly claim that IA is as crucial as loveless is important & a sign of maturity & wisdom

I don't think IA is any better or worse than an Eric's Trip record on its own, but taken as a sketch for Loveless it's breathtaking. It's as if they identified all the human elements of IA-- "sexy" lyrics, Colm's juvenile drumming, distinguishable guitars, Sonic Youth-y dissonant chords, phrasing-- and bled them out of that record, replaced them with simpler structures, more brazen textural choices, to create something more stately.

When I first heard "Only Shallow" kick in as a teen, it seemed impenetrable. But listening to it after IA, it seems... well, simple, in a classical sort of way

poxen, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 16:22 (eleven years ago) link

i like eric's trip a lot, actually, but the relationship between eric's trip and isn't anything is pretty much

If you can come up with a closer cousin to "Isn't Anything" than "Love Tara" I'll buy you a pizza

poxen, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 16:55 (eleven years ago) link

Quite ridiculous but aside from the 'a' sides I hadn't heard most of the stuff on the eps and rarities disc. I was somewhat taken aback when PE's 'Security Of The First World' beat kicked in!

listening to Off Your Face for the first time in years

Possibly my favourite track of theirs

Pacific Trash Vortex (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 21:09 (eleven years ago) link

Closest cousin I know of to "Isn't Anything" (which I like a lot) is Swirlies "Blondertongue Audiobaton" (which I also like a lot). Grandma pizza will be just fine.

The Swirlies are like the gluten-based imitation meat version of MBV so yes, you get a vegan pizza

either that, or Bobby(2nd left) has suddenly got very good looking!

Mark G, Thursday, 17 May 2012 12:03 (eleven years ago) link

I was going to mention the Swirlies. If you can imagine "Isnlt anything" without the reverse reverb (and the sexiness) you've got the Swirlies' first album. BTAB - 7 / 10, IA - 10 / 10.

Rob M Revisited, Thursday, 17 May 2012 12:10 (eleven years ago) link

the praise for blonder tongue, which tbf has aged reasonably well, seemed so odd to me at the time, since it seemed like a major step back from the brilliance of the preceding singles..

mexican sumner (electricsound), Thursday, 17 May 2012 12:24 (eleven years ago) link

I bought the singles comp by mistake thinking it was BTAB back in 93 so to me the album seemed a logical step forward. I know the album after with the long title gets all the praise but I couldn't get my head around it, or understand the love.

(Can't add much on the MBV reissues as my wife is giving me them at the end of the month for my birthday. Another week oif waiting won't make any difference after all this time)

Rob M Revisited, Thursday, 17 May 2012 12:33 (eleven years ago) link

ok, today i decided £25 for the full set was too good a deal to miss, and given that i've not heard loveless for a long long time and i dont have the original cd anymore (i have the tremolo ep buried in the archive, but again, unheard in years), i succumbed to the urge.

before the music hits the deck, the main thing is that i love the packaging.

if you ask me, the heavy duty large cardboard sleeves, and the complete lack of sleevenotes totally suits the aesthetics

mark e, Thursday, 17 May 2012 16:08 (eleven years ago) link

ok. that was way way more emotional than i ever expected.

for the last 20 years i have viewed the cult of loveless from afar never really understanding the passion.

at the time of its release, i had the cd, and had memories of me listening to it, but the swirls of noise and melody not hitting me that much.

however, an hour ago i dropped the analogue remaster on, and suddenly i was back in '91 in our scum landlord underground one room bedsit with my newly wed wife, a little boombox/portable cd player, and our whole lives excitedly ahead of us.

as each track kicked in, my head just went 'oh fuck, i love this one .. '

the cd ended up going walkabouts when a friend emigrated to aus, ending up with me forgetting this album.

due to the heavy duty emotional kickback though, it could be a while before i listen to it again.

mark e, Thursday, 17 May 2012 17:21 (eleven years ago) link

I celebrated the release of the reissue today by listening to the original CD in the car. Sounded fine.

@bill a

yeah. it was a headf*ck too far.

given that i thought i didn't like the album, i never expected such an attachment to hit home.

I will always associate this album with playing Super Metroid on the SNES

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Thursday, 17 May 2012 23:42 (eleven years ago) link

Haha, I have the same connection between super r-type and computer world.

Mad God 40/40 (Z S), Thursday, 17 May 2012 23:56 (eleven years ago) link

the remaster sounds fantastic. so much attack, and so much space around each instrument

dayo, Friday, 18 May 2012 12:26 (eleven years ago) link

was never a 'big fan' (probably because I never heard it on vinyl amirite) but I am really really digging the remaster!

dayo, Friday, 18 May 2012 12:26 (eleven years ago) link

Orginal vinyl didn't sound very different from the CD in my opinion, and was only 1 disc so a bit of a quiet pressing. I'm hoping the new analog remaster will be spread over two discs.

Chewshabadoo, Friday, 18 May 2012 13:31 (eleven years ago) link

From everything Shields has said lately I'd really not thin it's "meant" to be heard on vinyl.

were the remasters any good? i'm reluctant to listen to a new version of Loveless despite the quietness of the original master.

spazzmatazz, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 16:52 (eleven years ago) link

I would gladly pay you tuesday out of my loveless wallet for a new MBV album today

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 17:07 (eleven years ago) link

RMDE at "quietness".

The remasters from Analogue tapes sounded like an improvement to me, especially in the bass frequencies.

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 17:18 (eleven years ago) link

I'm not really getting what that product is supposed to be. Like for money?

It's for Oyster travel cards and such.

does the fact it chops the bottom off the m annoy anyone else? it's like the one thing they had to consider and they got it wrong.

yes, is for travelcards, hence the name TravelTunes. that blue wavy design in the back is an oyster card, (virtually) everyone in london has one.

Yes. Looking at some of the wallets they offer they just seem to be artist's impressions of what the cardholder might look like when they print one off.

It's a sony thing methinks, homing in on the 'fans who'll buy any old shit with their favourite band's likeness attached' market, thus:

Supper's Burnt (PaulTMA), Thursday, 13 September 2012 10:21 (eleven years ago) link

that said, it's £6 and looks like it comes with digital copy of the double cd... (7.49 on amazon.co.uk)

koogs, Thursday, 13 September 2012 11:11 (eleven years ago) link

This is how they'll save the music industry for sure.

Evan, Thursday, 13 September 2012 13:26 (eleven years ago) link

I have never heard of a "travel card" before. They're credit-card sized right?

gwenguthrie gwen ross (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 13 September 2012 14:00 (eleven years ago) link

yes. http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/14836.aspx

koogs, Thursday, 13 September 2012 14:06 (eleven years ago) link

It's interesting though that they're marketed as travel wallets and not credit wallets or just card wallets. So I take it their ubiquity extends beyond major metro areas?
