Saw this last night. Probably the best superhero movie I've seen.

I don't know, man, it's no Punisher: War Zone

Nothing is, though.

I love this episode, it's with the director of Punisher: War Zone.

first screening of new 3d tech. the effect is cool and much improved, but pretty distracting, including getting the right focal point over my glasses. Will probably not bother with 3D again for a while.

wait how is the punisher not a superhero? he has an origin and a sidekick and a hideout and a rogue's gallery

adam, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 16:35 (eleven years ago) link

...but no superpowers. You might as well call Batman a superhero.

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 16:38 (eleven years ago) link

most do

some dude, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 16:38 (eleven years ago) link

the Punisher's biggest roadblock to SH status is no cape imo. you need superpowers and/or a cape, neither is a problem.

some dude, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 16:39 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, but most have a pedant attack with their name on it.

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 16:41 (eleven years ago) link

he needs a Pun Signal skull light. That'd tip it over.

b-b-but batman is one of the most archetypal superheroes out there.

Would love for there to be a scene like this in the Avengers sequel.

Punisher's got a costume, which is close enough to superhero. Besides, fuck a cape:

Batman has a mask and an alter ego.

Batman's a vigilante.

yeah, but come on, he's one of two characters that arguably invented and continues to define the superhero genre (w supes, natch). he's a superfriend, a member of the justice league, wears tights and a cape, battles supervillains, etc.

Batman that is a member of the Justice League and all that shit hasn't been in movies

Outside of a handful of periods, they're written as pretty different characters

"Superhero or not" is about the mootest damn question I can think of.

anyway...

disagree. the world in which batman exists is more self-contained in the movies than in the comics, not apparently a part of DC's superhero-dense universe, but the essence of the batman/bruce wayne character hasn't changed much in his transition from page to screen. he's very much in line with what we've seen in the comics over the last quarter century. nolan pushes the more fanciful elements to the margins in terms of a "realism" that's derived from espionage and action movies, but i don't see how this makes the character any less a superhero (though he is an unusual one, being powerless and all).

if you can let it go now.

sheesh, italics and everything

re: expertise, i think superheroes would be a better set of "experts" to consult on the worthiness of this shit than professional comic book critics, who i assume would reject it out of hand
