you can definitely present CHALLENGING OPINIONS as an entertaining and possibly edifying conversation-starter irl, whereas if you do it on ilx you just get shouted down or zinged from all sides, whether deservingly or not

i admire & probably try to emulate the way characters in whit stillman movies challop, sort of fabulist or whimsical, but seductive. "you don't have to read a book to have an opinion" or the thing about clichés in the newest one. otoh i've probably done more than my share of, like, drunkenly defending early nickelback singles or something equally heinous

i prefer literary criticism because then you get the author's point and the critic's point

not actually, think it's more like that they like her persona, which i don't think is a particularly novel criticism of vice, i mean that's pretty much what people say about a lot of the celebrities that vice promotes (thinking terry richardson and dash snow for two)

i think there's a kind of blunt insistence to some of the "this sucks" posting that reads not as angry, perhaps, but as weirdly and even belligerently intolerant. people are posting as though the complete suckyness of this music is a settled issue, as though it's flat-out impossible that any sensible person might disagree. no substantial critique of the music has been offered, and certainly none that engages with it on its own terms, just some swipes at the hype machine.
