Melted was indeed rad. Cheers!

If you liked "Hair," you should also get the S/T LP by Mikal Cronin, who is in Ty Segall's band - that album rules.

Walter Galt, Monday, 14 May 2012 16:21 (eleven years ago) link

Yep that Cronin lp from last year is superb. Anybody heard Slaughterhouse yet? I think it comes out next month.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Monday, 14 May 2012 16:36 (eleven years ago) link

hair is awesome, they started the set with WF dudes & played a few songs off of it (the first two iirc) so 70's though after they got off stage & ty segall band was on it a noticeable blast step back to the 60's

seeing Ty Segall/White Fence and The Men tonight at Webster Hall, I'm psyched

dmr, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 16:17 (eleven years ago) link

the men live show i saw was pretty boring tho

flopson, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 17:35 (eleven years ago) link

I've never seen em. They are on first so I'm not sure if I'll get there in time anyway.

hoping they have the Hair LP on sale at the show, I'll probably buy it

dmr, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 17:57 (eleven years ago) link

Really enjoying "Hair" despite not being keen on Ty Segall's previous work. This LP is nothing new but it works really well. Not sure where to start with White Fence but I should check some of his stuff out

gouty ted, Thursday, 17 May 2012 12:43 (eleven years ago) link

Shit, I thought the Men were FANTASTIC when I saw them a couple of months ago! They had a great female bassist with them then who I don't think is in the band anymore. But they were totally ferocious; the drummer's a monster.

Walter Galt, Thursday, 17 May 2012 13:05 (eleven years ago) link

bassist when i saw them was just some douchey looking guy with a haircut

flopson, Thursday, 17 May 2012 14:32 (eleven years ago) link

best show I have seen in aaaaaaages

missed the Men. Strange Boys were boring. White Fence was good. Ty Segall fucking RIPPED. seriously awesome.

dmr, Thursday, 17 May 2012 15:46 (eleven years ago) link

he came out with White Fence to do Long Black Curtain but I think that was the only song they did off "Hair." other than that they each had separate sets.

one of Ty Segall's encores was a cover of Gimme Some Money by the Thamesmen, from Spinal Tap. lolol.

all the stuff from Melted sounded incredible. Girlfriend and Finger were probably my favorites of the set.

dmr, Thursday, 17 May 2012 15:48 (eleven years ago) link

:-D

flopson, Thursday, 17 May 2012 16:42 (eleven years ago) link

Ty Segall was great. Missed everything else due to a transport fail but this felt like a christening. Crowd going nuts. Big, crowded NY room. He's on his waaaaay!

also lol @ this upthread:

guy with a haircut

^everyone has a haircut^

so we can eliminate him as the bassist.

yep. people I was with (people who see way too many shows) were like, "this show felt 'important' in a way most shows don't."

from the stage he said it was the best show they ever played

dmr, Friday, 18 May 2012 20:26 (eleven years ago) link

it's crazy how much better his live show has gotten since just last summer

flopson, Friday, 18 May 2012 20:31 (eleven years ago) link

uh that's Long White Curtain and it's on White Fence Family Perfume. department of self corrections.

I know they did some of the joint tracks but I don't have that record yet. so I dunno.

i guess i need to see him sometime soon then, cuz he was putting on great shows a couple years back, but i haven't seen him in a while

I'm starting to think the Ty Segall Band's "Slaughterhouse" is Segall's best album yet.

Agree? Disagree?

Unsure? Then hear it (thanks Whiney): http://www.spin.com/articles/hear-ty-segall-bands-gnarly-full-slaughterhouse

alpine static, Monday, 25 June 2012 17:55 (eleven years ago) link

Shit shit shi; I really want to stream this, but every time I click on the link (or any link to Spin's website), I get redirected to the Spin homepage. Does anybody know how to work around this?

Evan R, Monday, 25 June 2012 18:52 (eleven years ago) link

After a few spins I think it is equal to his best albums which is high praise. Although Tell Me What's Inside Your Heart and Wave Goodbye sound like two of his best ever songs. I will probably have changed my mind by next week and consider it his best album!

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Monday, 25 June 2012 19:09 (eleven years ago) link

same thing happens to me but if you are using firefox apparently it works better on different browsers, also if you follow links within spin website rather than going straight fom external link you won't get constantly redirected i think

damn, slaughterhouse rocks! this dude is going to be huge, isn't he?

tylerw, Thursday, 28 June 2012 19:53 (eleven years ago) link

I don't think dudes get to be huge anymore.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 28 June 2012 19:55 (eleven years ago) link

my waistline begs to differ. slaughterhouse is amazing though.

contenderizer, Thursday, 28 June 2012 19:56 (eleven years ago) link

what i mean is: this dude is totally going to be selling out 300-seat venues soon, isn't he?!

tylerw, Thursday, 28 June 2012 19:57 (eleven years ago) link

somewhere between de stijl and white blood cells huge

contenderizer, Thursday, 28 June 2012 19:59 (eleven years ago) link

he's def not going to have to do his one man band shit anymore

I'm starting to think the Ty Segall Band's "Slaughterhouse" is Segall's best album yet.

still think "Melted" is the best but that was pretty awesome (just listened to the Spin stream)

I wanted to buy "Hair" yesterday but Other Music didn't have it

dmr, Thursday, 28 June 2012 21:22 (eleven years ago) link

I'd love to see this dude blow up, I think he should at least be able to get to Jay Reatard levels. Which isn't huge huge, but not too shabby for a garage rock dude.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 28 June 2012 21:43 (eleven years ago) link

kind of surprised he isn't there yet, tbh

contenderizer, Thursday, 28 June 2012 21:56 (eleven years ago) link

jay reatard levels?

the late great, Thursday, 28 June 2012 23:51 (eleven years ago) link

I would say he is currently at least as big as, or about to be. I don't remember Jay Reatard packing Webster Hall

dmr, Friday, 29 June 2012 00:20 (eleven years ago) link

let's hope he won't get huge, cause it will probably make his music worse as it almost always does.
plus, the "one man band" thing is one of the major reasons his records are good.
in short, things should stay as they are imo.

nostormo, Friday, 29 June 2012 18:35 (eleven years ago) link

ty segall is bigger than jay reatard ever was when he was alive

carly rae (flopson), Friday, 29 June 2012 18:41 (eleven years ago) link

"freedom's goblin" is a terrific album. i wouldn't have even bothered checking it out but a co-worker put it on and now i can't stop listening. it goes so many different and wonderful places! and the songwriting is really stellar. leagues beyond the yelps and hackneyed "psych" tropes i've come to expect from him, john dwyer et al.

louise ck (milo z), Monday, 26 November 2018 22:34 (five years ago) link

I thought the covers album was really boring, like a high school covers band. Ty at his best is brilliant - Freedom's Goblin often is. But Fudge Sandwich felt like a certain period of Robert Pollard stuff, where he's more into making "product" than actual good records (tho the Lennon cover was strong).

This guy has kind of fallen off the ilx radar a little it seems, new one ("Hello, Hi") is another really good one. Mostly acoustic, pretty chill, but still filled with gems.
