that said, i recall your advocacy of the paris hilton album on ILM as the point that i started to not be on board w/ popism anymore and i really started to feel like supporting particular stuff just to make a populist critical statement was actually a thing, not that i'm saying i have proof that's what you were up to, but just that i started to suspect that this might be lurking just under the surface of the nylpm "everything is great!" stance.

but i have no idea why anyone would think people would like something just to prove a point, or be unable to see why people would take offence at that charge. there's tons of music i think obviously sucks but i don't go around accusing bob dylan or beatles fans of fronting, i just think they have shitty taste. in most of these discussions i read more words and arguments by fans of [paris hilton] or [kitty pryde] or whoever and to respond like you & others do "they're just pretending, this sucks because it sucks and i don't even need to explain why" is inadequate

nb i still love the paris hilton album. such a likeable record

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Monday, 14 May 2012 15:03 (eleven years ago) link

but you sort of do accuse them of fronting when you say "serious dude music", if i read you correctly you're accusing people of liking music for gravitas rather than on aesthetic grounds

i like one song on paris hilton's album, I think it had stars in the title

the late great, Monday, 14 May 2012 15:15 (eleven years ago) link

can't say i much care for the rest but i did watch both seasons of her mtv show and i think she's smart and funny though nicole ritchie runs laps around her in that category

the late great, Monday, 14 May 2012 15:17 (eleven years ago) link

yeah! well you've also got "suicide" as merely "stupid pride", a somewhat hardline xtian sentiment which that indeed daring pantheism x astrology "gods are crazy / stars are blind" double whammy immediately vexes. and then yr everyday manichaean "be the devil and angel too" chaser. paris milton more like.

i liked the assembly line Dr. Luke song from the Paris Hilton record that literally anybody could have sung exactly as well

got a lot of love for rtc (and you too lex, secretly) but not enough to get me on board

and yes, stars are blind

haha the top 10 most popular search results for 'Paris Hilton' in Spotify are 50% songs by Paris, 50% songs with titles that reference her by Lil B, CSS, Vincent Gallo and Maybeshewill

tbh faking enthusiasm for something i'm not that into just to make a "point" seems like it would be a lot of work and effort. and i'm not sure anyone can tear into shit pop quite as harshly as true pop fans.

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Monday, 14 May 2012 15:26 (eleven years ago) link

how is it not a million times worse to suggest that someone likes a particular artist because they're a pedophile than because they're trying to make a political/cultural point?

uh nobody i know though

i have a personal policy of taking people at face value about their taste and not second-guessing their intentions, but some folks definitely do make that nearly impossible to stick to

it's all that lilting teenspeak thing. that's what keeps me from liking it, but it's also what keeps me from condemning it.

distressing implication. i don't like the cosmic love stuff much. only songs i really dig on altered ego are the one's where she's in full, fire-breathing attack mode.

when i was in 9th or 10th grade some friends from school had a rap group called Bubble Up, four official members: MC Delta T (that name was some math equation or something), The Lyrical Miracle, and the Nicarguan Nightmare (he wasn't from nicaragua, the name came from this sketch on SNL where white people in a newsroom overpronounced spanish words like Nicaragua or Me-hee-coh or Doritos, they loved that sketch a lot)...

the "DJ" was a kid that played in a death metal band - DJ Dominator -- he was into Morbid Angel and Deicide, etc but he was the one who could kind of play keyboards and so he became the DJ...he just used preset beats and then played stuff over it...

they did a whole "album" (cassette), I can't remember all the songs, there was "Littabugs" (kind of based off of 100 Miles and Runnin' by NWA, it had the fake "police CB" banter between verses about how they were on the tail of some "hardcore littabugs" who were driving all over littering"....there was "Workin' At the Seed Farm" (Lyrical's dad owned seed farm where they grew seed corn for Dekalb I think, and 2 of them worked there)....and "Genocide on Wells" (Wells was a neighboring town and it was about killing the Wells mens tennis team - they all played tennis)...and "He's Gay" (diss track about a guy named Steve)....and "Bitch Patrol (feat. MC Peanut Gallery)"...(i dunno they basically just called ppl bitches)...and "Heist at the Easton Bank" (another crime one, but they were robbing a bank in this super tiny town of like 300 ppl)....

I did a guest verse on the posse cut "Rap Casserole" (My name was MC Escher)....my cameo was widely thought to have stolen the show....my money like was "I got money in the bank/I got girls on my dick/I got a lifetime subscription to Ranger Rick"....the beat was just DJ Dominator replaying the bassline to "Brick House" by the Commodores on a Casio keyboard....

anyway, I just remembered all this and I thought I'd write it out...this seemed like the best thread for it.

I'm really glad YouTube didn't exist then.

oh there was another song called "Kickin' the Saffapants"...which was about wearing MC Hammer pants, they called those type of pants "Saffapants" because they misheard "dance how they want to dance, kick and then slap a friend" part from "Adamm's Groove" by MC Hammer as "Kickin' the saffapants" so they started calling MC Hammer pants that

yeah but this is enthusiasm about the doing of the challop rather than the holding of it, I think.

oh god yeah haha that was the shock rap one....bubble up enters a jerking off competition and pushes themselves past the uh limit:

"drawin' blood
no pain, no gain
takin' one for the team
goin' waaaay paaast cream"

not sure i agree with that

the late great, Monday, 14 May 2012 17:35 (eleven years ago) link

you can definitely present CHALLENGING OPINIONS as an entertaining and possibly edifying conversation-starter irl, whereas if you do it on ilx you just get shouted down or zinged from all sides, whether deservingly or not

you can definitely present CHALLENGING OPINIONS as an entertaining and possibly edifying conversation-starter irl

i think you can do that on ilx too, like especially if your name is dave q or whatever

the late great, Monday, 14 May 2012 17:42 (eleven years ago) link

i admire & probably try to emulate the way characters in whit stillman movies challop, sort of fabulist or whimsical, but seductive. "you don't have to read a book to have an opinion" or the thing about clichés in the newest one. otoh i've probably done more than my share of, like, drunkenly defending early nickelback singles or something equally heinous

flopson, Monday, 14 May 2012 17:46 (eleven years ago) link

i prefer literary criticism because then you get the author's point and the critic's point

Mordy, Monday, 14 May 2012 17:49 (eleven years ago) link

well i'm talking about ilx in 2012. a dave q era thread probably resembles a small casual converstaion more than it resembles 'tumblr rapper kitty pryde.'
