I'm ready a really good book. The Countess by Rebecca Johns - http://www.amazon.com/The-Countess-Novel-Rebecca-Johns/dp/0307588459. It's historical fiction about everybody's favorite grumpy Hungarian countess, Elizabeth Nadasdy nee Bathory. It's proper historical fiction, not SHE WAS REALLY A VAMPIRE fiction, and it is really fascinating. And gross.

A friend who works in one of the Prudential buildings is FBing about protesters breaking in and getting arrested (Obama HQ also in that building).

Oh dang.

I'm torn between being very excited about all of the protests/civil disobedience and being preemptively exhausted about how this is going to impact my daily life and also being very stressed because I have so much work to do and can't afford to miss any days.

The latter two are exacerbated by my having contracted a Hell Cold sometime this weekend.

Slow down, Chicago (Jenny slow down)

I did not get myself a present. But I'm not shy about getting myself presents so it's okay.

I learned a new word from that story - squadrol. It's the proper term for a paddy wagon.

Man, I wonder what the Russians-Control-The-Weather guy is doing this week.

Also reading about singing Down by the Riverside and This Little Light of Mine as part of a faith-based social justice protest gave me flashbacks.

xp Or Obama Spare My Child for Me/Father's Rights Hunger Strike guy, nee FBI Stop Raping my Wife guy. Maybe he's working from home.

Dan, who issued that map? I don't understand the why it says Northbound Lake St. and Southbound Lake St.

Pita Malört (Je55e), Monday, 14 May 2012 15:37 (eleven years ago) link

That's my fault, I cut off part of the legend when cropping it out of the PDF. It should be Lake Shore Drive.

Also reading about singing Down by the Riverside and This Little Light of Mine as part of a faith-based social justice protest gave me flashbacks.

Me too! I actually had to speak during a public group prayer one time in NOLA. Fortunately the some leaders of the Worker Justice, Inc. had schooled me on their experiences in hiding godless atheism.

Pita Malört (Je55e), Monday, 14 May 2012 15:54 (eleven years ago) link

They are removing public bike racks for next weekend. I feel like that's more about targeting protesters than it is about public safety.

If they want to remove things that might interfere with public safety, they should burn the big white statute/public urinal in front of my building.

people are freaking out. but it's so beautiful outside.

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 14 May 2012 20:31 (eleven years ago) link

so a friend of mine is pretty heavily involved with occupy chicago's media team, and he keeps retweeting people who are harassing them via twitter, and it's like reading the comments on a trib article but worse

Steve Youngblood (dan m), Monday, 14 May 2012 20:40 (eleven years ago) link

Ugh. Rahm has basically painted all potential protesters as terrorists so it's no surprise people are being jerks.

Although, that may be less of a clusterfuck than other events.

Did you know the Map Room opens at 6:30 AM every weekday?

Jeff, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 12:14 (eleven years ago) link

Wow, I'm getting annoyed by news headlines this morning. Not even the articles - just the headlines (especially this one - Political Memo: For Some, Same-Sex Marriage Is Not Politics, It’s Personal - NO SHIT). I think I should call out of work and go to the Map Room.

Polly biscuit face (carl agatha), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 12:33 (eleven years ago) link

Also this one, which is blessedly behind the Sun Times's new paywall - "The real black marriage problem."

Polly biscuit face (carl agatha), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 12:34 (eleven years ago) link

Black marriage should be legal IMO.

Pita Malört (Je55e), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 13:23 (eleven years ago) link

I hope the article is accompanied by a guy with a cat-who-ate-the-canary smile and a woman with her arms crossed.

Oh hey Nick, I had a dream about you last night. You had somehow experienced The Afterlife (without dying) but were annoyed that it was basically just like Life On Earth. Happy birthday.

Did you know the Map Room opens at 6:30 AM every weekday?

I knew that they were a coffee bar in the A.M., but do they serve beer, too? I don't know if y'all have been to K's Dugout (at Foster and ... Winchester, maybe?), but they used to open around that time as well since they catered to a lot of third-shift workers who wanted a drink when they got off work.

Carrie Antwoord (jaymc), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 14:28 (eleven years ago) link

Why does K's Dugout sound so familiar?? Did we go there for your b-day drinks one time, John?

Rossi's on State St. opens at 7:00, or did years ago when I went there at 8:00 a.m. to pick up a jacket I left there the night before. There were 2 or 3 crusty looking men in there drinking beer at that time.

Pita Malört (Je55e), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 14:30 (eleven years ago) link

Quite possibly, Jesse. I haven't been there in years, but I drank there occasionally when I lived in the area. Kr still gives me shit b/c one time when we were there, I cavalierly told a middle-aged working-class dude that he should take a job he'd been offered on an oil rig in the Persian Gulf. I was all "You'll regret it if you don't!" -- which is the kind of thing 20-something college grads use as justifications for their decisions, but I obv. didn't know shit about his life.

Carrie Antwoord (jaymc), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 14:37 (eleven years ago) link

We had someone's birthday afterparty there years ago, maybe that's it? K_lsey was there.

former personal denim advisor to the mayor, (La Lechera), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 14:46 (eleven years ago) link

If the circumstances were right I think I could drink beer @ 6:30 am.

Polly biscuit face (carl agatha), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 14:59 (eleven years ago) link

K's Dugout was a New Years Eve site in '05, if you were there then with me and Jaymc, Je55e.
