Who is "this guy"?

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Saturday, 12 May 2012 23:50 (eleven years ago) link

Lucius Malfoy

President Keyes, Saturday, 12 May 2012 23:54 (eleven years ago) link

Jason Isaacs, lead role in Awake and also known from several Harry Potter films (though I've seen none of them, so he was new to me).

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 12 May 2012 23:55 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i mean being the 30th most famous person in a harry potter movie really isn't the kind of q rating that lends itself to headlining a network series

some dude, Sunday, 13 May 2012 01:17 (eleven years ago) link

well keifer's new show isn't doing much better--so there's yer star power.

President Keyes, Sunday, 13 May 2012 01:19 (eleven years ago) link

ughhhhh nevermind i'm not going to hold the point any closer to your face as you keep deliberately missing it

some dude, Sunday, 13 May 2012 01:22 (eleven years ago) link

too gnostic for me

President Keyes, Sunday, 13 May 2012 01:37 (eleven years ago) link

lol is a big name really a prereq for headlining a network drama? did er break cuz it had the guy who played goose nearly ten years earlier? did grey's anatomy break cuz ppl couldn't wait to see what luke wilson's love interest from old school did next? when miami vice came out did ppl go 'o shit it's don johnson from the harrad experiment! as a cop! i gotta watch this!'? probably the opposite is true right - if you're a big name headlining a network drama you're either come off a string of failures in film that have reduced you to doing tv or you're following up a prior big hit tv show in which case good luck catching lightning in a bottle twice (cf kiefer)(though counterpoint cf kiefer w/ 24!). tbf lucius malfoy was a very prominent character in the harry potter movies and one of a few to be in almost all of them but i'm not sure how many ppl would've even realized dude in awake is lucius malfoy or that it would've made a difference, i don't know of anyone who watched luck cuz dumbledore was in it. will admit draco malfoy played a role in me checking out rise of the planet of the apes though.

fwiw i didn't watch awake cuz that show screamed 'soon to be canceled' and though i never thought of it this way 'guess which one of this guy's loved ones is actually dead! see him deal w/ harrowing grief - in parallel universes maybe?' is a horrible hookline for a show.

balls, Sunday, 13 May 2012 01:55 (eleven years ago) link

obv name recognition isn't everything, but it kinda WAS my point that at a time when movie stars are all running to TV and even someone pretty damn famous like i dunno ashley judd can get their show canceled right away (or christian slater can get canceled THREE TIMES), Awake being one of the only new shows on the air without a household name front and center was probably one strike (of many) against it

but yeah the basic premise is a horrible hookline, was all i was really saying

some dude, Sunday, 13 May 2012 01:56 (eleven years ago) link

yeah but ashley judd even being on tv was a 'o right, her career did kinda die didn't it' and christian slater defined 'stench of failure' even before he couldn't keep a show on the air on nbc. then again madeline stowe star power probably did help revenge, the breakout hit tv drama of this past year and the only network drama i actually watch now.

balls, Sunday, 13 May 2012 02:14 (eleven years ago) link

Just finished this. Wow.

Also, why the fuck Hulu keep showing me shitty car adverts? How many more of these do I need to thumbs-down?

This was a fun ep, advanced the plot without forgetting to be silly.

i remember the cast saying during the hiatus that community would get much, much darker post-hiatus, but i hadn't gotten that vibe until now. it's unfortunate because i eat that kind of stuff up.

phantompenguin, Sunday, 13 May 2012 06:35 (eleven years ago) link

I leave awake on because I'm not really engaged after the comedy block is on and usually start getting ready for the next day, ironing clothes, packing lunch, etc. but have never seen Harry Potter so thanks for IDing the dude!

great use of john hodgman btw - i wonder if they'll ever get him and john oliver together

Nhex, Sunday, 13 May 2012 23:13 (eleven years ago) link

throughout the first season Harmon talked about how he'd probably only be showrunner for a year and then go off and do other things once the show is up and running and in a groove. i'm glad he didn't do it then, but if he needs a break or w/e sure see how other people do with it.

you guys can guess how i felt about the scene where Abed has a seizure/tantrum because he doesn't understand fucking daylight savings time

contendo entertainment system (some dude), Monday, 14 May 2012 01:13 (eleven years ago) link

btw since when has 'showrunner' been a term of use

thank u

mookieproof, Monday, 14 May 2012 01:19 (eleven years ago) link

Harmon doesn't want to leave as far as I can tell. It might be an issue with Sony. His next two guys are going off to do something else.

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Monday, 14 May 2012 01:28 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i know the whole thing is foggy, i'm just saying it's not like he's ever been "this show can't exist without me," so neither should viewers imo

I think this saddened me so much that I blocked it out from my memory.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 14 May 2012 01:32 (eleven years ago) link

Also feel this show has gone places I don't think he would have expected it to in that first season.

thought it would be a total waste of an episode but i did laugh pretty hard at the jive turkeys.

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Friday, 18 May 2012 00:28 (eleven years ago) link

last couple of episodes more emotionally satisfying than i expected. seems like they were expecting cancellation with that ending (even though they throw a couple of leads for next season)

Nhex, Friday, 18 May 2012 02:12 (eleven years ago) link

Those last two episodes were pretty great.

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Friday, 18 May 2012 02:20 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, took me a few minutes to acclimate, but it ended up being really good. And then the two bigger arc episodes were fantastic. Not a lot of totally lol jokes, but plenty of warm and fuzzy.

those were great. right up there with remedial chaos theory, documentary filmmaking: redux and virtual systems analysis as best-of-the-season/series.

finale finale was a bit weaker than the first two but still great.

twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Friday, 18 May 2012 04:45 (eleven years ago) link

I thought the finale finale was great! Evil Abed ripping apart Britta was stone cold, and his saunter through the halls with the cigarette was fantastic.

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Friday, 18 May 2012 04:46 (eleven years ago) link

and the Britta dinosaur callback!

Nhex, Friday, 18 May 2012 04:50 (eleven years ago) link

oh, finale finale was great - just wasn't as laugh a minute for me as the first two. it brought the feelings. which are also important for community.
