Are 'logos' and 'insignias' interchangeable? B/c a lot of my favorites are really insignias w/o any text. Blue Oyster Cult for example. They don't have a 'logo' I really care for but their insignia is probably my favorite ever.

Huskers otoh had a killer logo and a killer insig.

glad they mention the classic camper van beethovan font that EVERYONE in my jr high had all over their trapper keepers

i've never gotten clear about the distinction between font and typeface. and now re: husker du, logo and insignia.

hey, it turns out that this list of band logos in past magazine is bad and terrible

capt save a pastes up in here

da croupier, Friday, 11 May 2012 17:51 (eleven years ago) link

logo and insignia are roughly interchangeable terms when it comes to this sort of thing. neither has to have text to count. BOC symbol is a classic band logo/insignia.

iirc, the difference between font and typface, refers to the difference between the concrete thing you print with (the font) and the design embodied in it (the typeface)

I mentioned in some BOC thread how I drew one on the blackboard EVERY DAY during high school calculus class!

Weezer uses that same logo on every fucking album cover. So instead let's include that flying W thing.

billstevejim, Friday, 11 May 2012 18:53 (eleven years ago) link

This should've been a poll btw (Black Flag would've had my vote).

I'm sure these would have been linked to somewhere else, but:

The original site seems to have disappeared. A friend bought me the Scorsese; would rather have gotten the Bela Tarr.

three years pass...

Band logos are very much a "guy" thing aren't they? There's only two bands in that list (Cramps, ABBA) that aren't all male as far as I can tell. It's hard to think of many co-ed or all-female bands that have a logo. Then judging by the people you see around wearing t-shirts, patches or whatever, it's men that relate to logos for whatever reason. Maybe the music or genres that throw up bands with logos, like punk, metal, techno etc are just more boys clubs than the rest? Or maybe men are just inherently more into this kind of self-branding?

can't be arsed clicking through that whole paste magazine list, but is the B-52s logo really not included? disgraceful if so

soref, Thursday, 31 March 2016 01:06 (eight years ago) link

Good one! But no, they're not there.

L7 effectively have a logo for a name

post feels broadly otm though, band-shirt-as-personality-substitute generally a male practice I'd've thought, likewise the robust shitheaded territorial pissing re: who is and isn't entitled to wear Motorhead logos or whatever

sorry for the image bomb. Just thought about the women musicians I listen to most often and their logos. Are there any bands you were thinking about in particular that you were thinking of, everything?

how's life, Thursday, 31 March 2016 09:27 (eight years ago) link

Screaming Females does not appear to have a logo. Nor Sleater-Kinney.

seems like the original paste feature that this article linked to is gone. Here is another feature by them about logos. St. Vincent's is pretty dope. Most of the rest look like they could be logos for big oil or something.
