Willow, I'd imagine.

Even Dwarves Started Small is pretty horrifying

Roger Barfing (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 10 May 2012 22:33 (eleven years ago) link

i would have totally voted for that [dark night of the scarecrow] if i had remembered the name oh a week ago or so (although to be fair i havent seen it since i was a kid so i might be giving it too much credit)

OTM! i did remember it, but had the same reservations about the accuracy of my childhood recollections. and i didn't want to waste a vote. i do remember that they hyped the hell out of it in the weeks leading up, so i was super-excited to see it. 14 at the time, so it didn't really mess me up, but it was scary and cool (iirc). final scene still haunts me.

Even Dwarves Started Small always felt just a shade off seventies decadent Euro-horror. Like all it needs is three seconds of girls making out and it'd be there.

Is there a horror movie where a little person get's stabbed to death and then shot out of a cannon into a wood chipper? If so, that's probably the one jjjusten voted for because he hates the wee.

Can't abide-a-wee

Hierophantiasis (Jon Lewis), Friday, 11 May 2012 16:00 (eleven years ago) link

Results will begin next week, likely Tuesday or Wednesday. It'll be a seven-day unveil of six installments of 15 and then the top 10.

np it's the horror poll we like to be shocked

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Friday, 11 May 2012 16:15 (eleven years ago) link

if the results can leap out from the bottom right corner of the screen with a sting cue that would be great

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Friday, 11 May 2012 16:16 (eleven years ago) link

I'll use the threat to establish lateral and/or neutral space, a la Carpenter.

jungleous butterflies strange birds (Eric H.), Friday, 11 May 2012 16:17 (eleven years ago) link

Maybe we should start a Kindertrauma thread about too early childhood exposure to horror movies.

Some of my earliest scares were: The Bad Seed, Whatever Happened To Baby Jane and A Bucket Of Blood. Interesting to me, re-watching them as an adult, the levels of black humor and camp at work in these three.

Advanced Uncle Meat recovery system (Dan Peterson), Friday, 11 May 2012 18:02 (eleven years ago) link

When I was 6 or 7, there was a moment in Disney's Blackbeard's Ghost--a painting of a woman where you could see the eyes move--that terrified me. The Green Slime frightened me around the same time. The bar for scaring me has always been about as low as it gets.

The movie that fucked me up most as a kid (mentioned for, like, the fiftieth time): Testament.

You Don't Throw Oranges On An Escalator (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 11 May 2012 18:32 (eleven years ago) link

My ultimate kindertrauma was when my idiot babysitter (a grown up! Not some dumb teenager!) let me watch The Excorcist on TV when I was ten. That was a long sleepless night of lying awake in bed, waiting for the devil to come and possess me. (She also let me watch The Deerhunter.)

Polly biscuit face (carl agatha), Friday, 11 May 2012 18:34 (eleven years ago) link

Trilogy Of Terror is on my ballot solely due to chittering doll kindertrauma, I have never gone near that flick again.

Hierophantiasis (Jon Lewis), Friday, 11 May 2012 18:36 (eleven years ago) link

TV commercial for Amityville Horror literally ruined me for 2-3 years

Hierophantiasis (Jon Lewis), Friday, 11 May 2012 18:37 (eleven years ago) link

I probably mentioned this elsewhere but my most traumatic TV childhood experience was seeing this, age 9 (20 minutes of your time but worth sticking with it) :

i was more traumatized as a youth by small wonder than by any horror film.

FINALLY. Hopefully in future, you'll get your priorities straight and put ILX polls before work.

You Don't Throw Oranges On An Escalator (Deric W. Haircare), Saturday, 12 May 2012 15:47 (eleven years ago) link

Balloting is now officially, irreparably closed.

The ballot I was anticipating but afaik never received was Mr. Hal Jam's. :(

jungleous butterflies strange birds (Eric H.), Saturday, 12 May 2012 15:51 (eleven years ago) link

Aw, shame. But at least you got Morbs'.

emil.y, Saturday, 12 May 2012 15:57 (eleven years ago) link

the other thing wasn't work, either

World Congress of Itch (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 12 May 2012 15:59 (eleven years ago) link

As I'm tabulating the results, I can already see Morbs' ballot ousted something from the top 5 I really wanted to be in the top 5. Such wonton destructivism.

(Hint: It was Troll 2.)

jungleous butterflies strange birds (Eric H.), Saturday, 12 May 2012 16:05 (eleven years ago) link

DAMN IT. Well, as long as Troll is still a contender.

there's only one of eli roth's top 5 horror movies that i'd want to see come in top 5 here, and it doesn't have the word troll in the title

You don't know what you're missing if you haven't seen Cannibal Comptroller.

i pretty much saw everything in my top ten (save two) before i was emotionally ready for them.

jesus christ (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Saturday, 12 May 2012 22:51 (eleven years ago) link

the first movie to ever truly scare the bejeezus out of me was pinocchio at age 3 or 4 though. apparently i was howling so bad by the monstro scene my mom dragged me out and then i started complaining that she had dragged me out.

jesus christ (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Saturday, 12 May 2012 22:53 (eleven years ago) link

Are we allowed to talk about things we're still catching up on because of the poll? Because I just watched The Sentinel on netflix insta and loved it. It was a LOT more bent than I was expecting, with a ridiculous cast (very young C Walken and J Goldblum and C Sarandon PLUS william dickey and eli wallach and Jerry Orbach are you fkin kiddin' me?) and a really superbly protean score from Gil Melle.

Hierophantiasis (Jon Lewis), Sunday, 13 May 2012 15:11 (eleven years ago) link

You are forgetting Beverly D'Angelo in the role of a lifetime.

same here but mine was fantasia... night on bald mountain!

I also begged to go see grizzly when I was 5 and the first kill scene freaked me out so much we ended up in the next theater watching the bad news bears

plus ava gardner and BURGESS MEREDITH!

yeah this movie rules. v underrated. "woman finds out her apt is a portal to hell" is a great premise too.

also, i don't scare particularly easy when watching movies but i thought it had some genuinely creepy moments.

didnt realize melle did the score! thats the andromeda strain guy, right? don't remember the score too well tbh.

yeah, it's great, right? so sleazy and creepy, plus excellent music, makeup effects by dick smith. i wanted to talk about it in the nominations thread, but forgot. didn't vote for it, but it was in the running.
